Scroll of Kitsuki Donoha Part 43

Mysteries Deepen Upon Murder Most Foul

Tetsuo san provided more details about how the father died at the shrine behind the governor’s castle. Apparently, the former governor is the one that broke the shrine behind the castle as he died. That happened three months ago. Which just happen to coincide with the time table at the Serpent’s Tail mine! This information from Haru san was getting progressively more complex. Also, during this time the peasant chef the former lord was fond of disappeared! This was quickly turning from a string of coincidences to a plot to seize power. Quite possibly through the young, acting, governor.

It was decided to sleep in shifts tonight and Donaha sama was quick to volunteer for the second watch. Hanzo san offered to take the second watch and show the Dragon how the Scorpion fight. The Unicorn shugenja opted to go and meditate at the waterfall. One other very odd scenario noticed by a few members of the troupe, no guards patrolling the city. Hanzo san mention they would check on this as Gunba san left the loaned house for the waterfall in the light snowfall. As everyone began to settle down, night crashed upon the mountain city.

Upon his return Gunba san asked him in what direction he had wandered as he heard a person walk from one location to another behind him. Had there not been snow this might have escaped his notice. Alas he was in the middle of meditation and the steps never came closer to him. The Scorpion mentioned he would tell Donoha sama, but he had to wake him to go over some techniques for his sparring match tomorrow.

Donoha sama roused at the touch from Hanzo san. When the Scorpion tried to begin explaining things in earnest. The Dragon stopped mentioning he was good with a sword, but even he did not want to practice anything in a room full of sleeping people. They share a smile and Hanzo san took him to the shrine he had passed during his wanderings behind the castle. Taking one of the two bokken wooden swords Donoha sama carried he began to go over how a Scorpion bushi would attack.

Wielding the other bokken and Chikai kodzuchi 誓い小槌 the Oath-hammer in his off hand. The wakizashi from his tied to his back to be access from his left shoulder. While the jade katana was tied to his back for access from the right shoulder. Thus making it clear he had no intention of using the jade katana. Mittsu Tamashi 三魂 the Three Souls Katana was still on his left hip in his obi. Hanzo san came after him again and again.

After some time Donoha asked him to use the shorter, straight sword he seemed fond of. The Scorpion agreed but had to clean it in the snow first for some reason. It looked as though it had an acid etched blade similar to his making it dark. However, it seemed to come off much easier than he suspected it should. Perhaps he’d not kept up on its maintenance. Regardless, once he was done the Dragon took the center stance and told him to strike him!

It was clear in an instant that Hanzo san had his own skill with the blade as he did manage to strike him, and leave a scratch. When the Dragon launched into action as a reply he deliberately struck the hand holding the blade so hard it went flying. He left a scratch with the wooden blade that matches the damage done by real weapon of his opponent! Hanzo san tried to apply a powder to Donoha sama’s scratch. While he appreciated the offer he told him he felt fine. In truth, Donoha sama learned everything he’d wanted to know about Hanzo san and his skills. Quietly, he wondered whom was more deadly, Shosuro Hanzo san or Bayushi Airi san.

Hanzo san, went to head and bed down. This finally allowed Donoha to focus on the other item that had caught his attention. The state of the shrine that was designed for communal use so any number of fortunes or kami could be honored at it. The one at the mine had been damaged far worse, but if he grabbed his supplies he could fix this completely – tonight! He finished about a full hour of the day before sunrise. He had found incense and lit offerings to Earth, Fire for the shrine. Water for the city, and to the fortune of Osano-Wo. Since the event at the shrine clearly had ties here he would meditate and recover his spirit if he could not get sleep.

Having used the last of his adhesives kit, the Dragon headed back after the glory of Amaterasu’s gaze touched his face. Hanzo san was very concerned about him not getting enough sleep and made some tea that should hold him over for a few hours of the day. Taro san was tasked with holding his two bokken while he left the jade katana upon the missives and then piled his armor on top. Kitagawa-neko sama took rest upon the pile like a watch-dog.

Gearing up to poke this administration to see what might shake loose between the Crane and the Scorpion. More than a little worried the young governor that might have helped to murder his father in a power grab. He had to start figuring out where everyone stood on the father. The group headed over to the governor’s castle and a different servant let them in and bid them toward the stairs.

The expected three were waiting and rice among other dishes were laid out as everyone waited for their arrival. While all of the pleasantries were maintained, Donoha sama knew the Doji and the Bayushi would not miss the unspoken message. Donoha sama had knelt to eat and chat about the morning but his katana was still in his obi on his left, his wakizashi was in the back, and the hammer was in the front. The grace he showed eating all the while being armed sent an unspoken message about how he felt in this home!

The young governor did not mention anything about it, so he mentioned having repaired the complete shrine behind the castle. It was clear the topic pained the young lord to discuss and they confirmed his father died there. They confirmed the thrashing about and that was how the shrine fell into disrepair. The more he heard it sounded like poison causing muscle spasms to the Kitsuki investigator and justiciar.

He continued with offering to pray with the young governor at the repaired shrine. Mirumoto Renjiro sama thanked him and said he would think about it. The feeling was a surprise this morning and still hurt more than he would like to admit. However, he was grateful for the offer and then excused everyone as he had topics to discuss with his advisor. Those same advisors were trying to glare tantos at the Dragon subtly, but Donoha sama had been trained to recognize such gestures. Inwardly, he smiled.

The Dragon wished everyone a good day and mentioned to the Bayushi about where they might meet for sparring. He was a little sad to be brushed off but decided not to call him scared for wanting to push off their sparring match. Instead, they mentioned the group was going to talk with the Water Kami about some dark visions they had been having. To most people it would seem like a passing thought, but again the subtext he once more intended for the Crane and the Scorpion. The message was he was not leaving, he was going to be digging into things.

Once outside, the group headed over to the waterfall’s pool. Where Gunba san communed with the Water Kami about the dark vision. What they were able to learn was that a person with an educated manner of speech was coercing a peasant into doing something for them. Also that the person doing the coercion had been here less time than the person being coerced.

This instantly ruled out Haru san and Agasha Tamori san because they founded Suigeki Toshi! While it did not completely rule out the young governor. It certainly pointed closer to the Crane and or the Scorpion as being the one coercing the peasant, and able to make them disappear. Next, Gunba san communed with the Earth Kami to find out the path the person behind him took last night.

A crack appeared in the ground leading from the window of one building, across the city center to the steps of another. Donoha sama stopped a peasant and asked about each building. It turns out the building where the crack stopped at the window belongs to the Doji and the other belongs to the Bayushi. The Dragon thanked them and allowed them to continue on with their day.

Upon examining the window of Doji Kyouji’s domicile it appears something heavy broke the window sill and it had been pushed back together. Opening the window and looking inside revealed a storage area with herbs drying and hung up. Seeing the entrance to the room was inside, Donoha sama headed right up the the door and opened it to head inside. Hanzo san was standing nearby as a look out while Gunba san and Tamaki san stay back closer to the city center and the waterfall for early warning. The game was getting interesting!

Celebration of the heroes of Mori Kage Toshi’s liberation

4th of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}) – Everyone adored the sleeping inside, especially without smelling the mortifying carcasses of two Ogres! Donoha san practiced his sword skills that morning, answered questions for me and moved to a garden to practice his drum. After a midday meal he began to get ready for the celebration. His armor had been repaired, stones and a box of cleaning supplies were provided to he could care for his blades. Every time someone needed something Asako Eiko made it appear, often before they even knew they needed it.

Armorsmiths were busy adding to Gombei san’s armor turning it into fine quality and repairing dents, scratches, lacquer, silk lacing, etc. Asahi san had been composing the song of the trials of Mori Kage Toshi! Airi san could be heard playing a Shamisen lute for a short time, otherwise her chamber was quiet. All of their preparations would would come to a head that night to a crowd over a thousand people strong!

The celebration was started with words by the Phoenix Clan Champion – Shiba Ujimitsu. He performed words of passing for Bayushi Akiyama san and Shiba Ogawa san Then as a mistress of ceremonies, Matsu Shànzi, was brought forward. She would give each hero an introduction and time to address the crowd. First up was the newest member of the group Hiruma Gombei san!

A thundering smash,
Tetsubo swift in motion,
Victory declared.

The soft spoken giant stunned the crowd by thinking of a haiku right on the spot. What made the crowd both gasp and then cheer was Gombei san physically acting out the haiku! He defied every expectation of a crass, rude, Crab bushi. He showed grace, gentleness, and inspiration of the arts with his haiku. His smile shattered preconceptions of other clans, marvelous!

The next samurai to be presented was courtier in gorgeous kimono. Having “just the right amount” of skin showing as they often say. Bayushi Airi san sauntered up in a full Oni mask of an ivory color with red accents. Their rendition of the liberation of Mori Kage Toshi moved me to tears it was so beautiful. For so much song and word to spill forth from behind their mask is a true testament to their talent.

Third in the line up was Akodo Asahi san. Until now the group had only heard him sing in battle. Now however, everyone would hear him sing to boast! He has such a beautiful voice and such range with highs and low tones! He even used the copper fan the ronin had given him to help with changing the pitch and volume. This samurai knew not just the sword but the art of song as well!

As the song picked up further Bayushi Airi san produced a shamisen from behind where she stood and joined in to accompany Asahi san. A few stanzas after that Kitsuki Donoha san produced the katsuki oke taiko drum with a shoulder strap and added to the song as well. It was not lost on the Emerald ambassadors this was the drum he had requested before going to Mori Kage Toshi!

To say the crowd was loving this was an understatement! People were clapping their hands, heimen and eta were dancing as it went on. The shamisen and taiko drum were in perfect sync with Asahi san’s voice! It was later learned that they had not been practicing together, but there timing came from teamwork in Mori Kage Toshi.

Last but not least was Kitsuki Donoha san. The second person ever to make an eight man cut. A multi-year gempukku and 500-koku to discover a new way to forge a katanna. He forgoes the differential temper and still creates a unique hamon upon the blade. Savior of 12 women from terrible fates:

  • Ikoma Tsanuri, daughter of the Ikoma Family Daimyo – Ikoma Anakazu, in Kenson Gakka during a raid.
  • Matsu Shànzi san, from three ronin on the road from Kyuden Ikoma.
  • Akodo Maki san, repairing a precious heirloom and saving their honor.
  • Matsu Mayumi san, from being kidnapped and killing the three ronin singlehandedly from Shànzi san’s encounter.
  • Moshi Hikaru san, from being sold into slavery.
  • Moshi Syuri san, from being sold into slavery.
  • Moshi Inoue san, from being sold into slavery.
  • Moshi Kondo san, from being sold into slavery.
  • Moshi Takako san, from being sold into slavery.
  • Bayushi Airi san, during one of the battles liberating Mori Kage Toshi.
  • Seia san, from becoming a sacrifice of a Maho shugenja while liberating Mori Kage Toshi.
  • Isawa Kyoko san, from becoming a sacrifice of a Maho shugenja while liberating Mori Kage Toshi.

Helped to defend Otosan Uchi in the Battle of the Emerald Shades.
Destroyed the Oni of Remembrance in Toshi Omoidasu with a ronin at his side. That Oni had plagued the city for 120 or more years!
Found the headpiece of the Oracle of Air
Negotiated the acquisition of the Scroll of the Blood Tree from Agash Yuzuki.
Aided the other samurai on stage with clearing out the tainted denizens of Mori Kage Toshi.
Performed the successful ritual pleading with the Oracle of Air to lift the curse on Mori Kage Toshi.
I am listing everything he did rather than trying to convey his boasting. However, what can be documented very well was the end of his boasting. He leapt off the stage and asked the children to come forward. When he had a crowd of them the Dragon had them all hold their hands out. Laying Mittsu Tamashi in their collective hands he told them to respect their families and listen in their dojos. One day that could be them on the stage. With a flourish he picked up the blade and leapt back stage sheathing his sword!

Each were presented with a gift:

This was given to Kitsuki Donoha sama.

Hiruma Gombei sama, Bayushi Airi sama, and Akodo Asahi sama were promoted to Sandan 参段 or 3rd dan / rank for their efforts at Mori Kage Toshi! Kitsuki Donoha sama was promoted to Yondan – 四段 or 4th dan! There is talk about making him an Emerald Magistrate given his accomplishments. With that the awarding ceremony came to an end. The celebration of this momentous occasion regarding two lifted curses of the shadow was just beginning!. Phoenix Clan Champion – Shiba Ujimitsu sama proclaim the start of the party and with the raising of his arms fireworks began to explode above lighting up the sky in blue, red, yellow, and green!

Donoha sama was approached at an attendant mentioning a carpenter had come to see him from Pale Oak castle. Donoha sama immediately excused himself because he knew only one carpenter in all of the Phoenix lands that would seek him out. Unmei san, whom would be, Chiasa san’s father, was found to be waiting just outside his wagon in the caravan beyond the walls of Shiro Shiba. He too, had not heard from Chiasa san and was willing to risk traveling all the way here in order to get answers about his daughter.

Donoha sama welcomed him into his wagon undoing his kabuto (helmet) and mempo mask. He assured him that he had spoken to her, though he left out the part that this was via a vision. Calming down the humble carpenter, Unmei san, with this news. When we remarked on being surprised the daimyo of the Aoijiro province had given their permission for him to seek this audience he learned the koku’s flip of the story. Unmei san did not have papers for travel and could be put to death for such an act!

Thinking quickly he sought out the Phoenix Emerald ambassador, Shiba Sono sama, with Unmei san in tow. On his way there he noticed Bayushi Airi sama in talks with the Scorpion Emerald ambassador, Bayushi Negi sama. Begging forgiveness when he realized he had interrupted a conversation with the Crane Emerald ambassador, Asahina Tadane sama, the Phoenix ambassador he sought. He explained the situation and in their mercy for one of the heroes of the celebration they arranged for an escort to return him with papers stating that they requested he come and his assistance was of much use. They had families themselves and could appreciate the father’s concern. The father would await for the escort at Donoha sama’s wagon and the Kitsuki was to make haste to the eastern gardens where his other companions awaited him.

ARRIVAL AT SHIRO SHIBA

3rd of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}) – When the group made it back from the spirit world the jade pendants blew away like dust on the wind. It was then the 1st of Doji/Goat. They spent the morning loading everything and prepping the – at that time – unconscious Seia san, Isawa Kyoko san, Matsu Shànzi (yep, that’s me) sama, and the unknown Isawa shugenja they had rescued for transport. Any tents and were left behind unless they could help with transport. Shirogane showed the group where all the horses were not unlike a pack dog.

Seia san was secured to Bayushi Airi san’s horse. Isawa Kyoko san was secured to Hiruma Gombei san’s horse, Matsu Shànzi sama was secured to Donoha san’s horse, Yukiabo, and the unknown shugenja was secured to Akodo Asahi’s horse.

The man that had been going by the name of Doji Hoto took the majority of the luggage on his horse. It took two days going as fast as they could to arrive at the caravan outside Shiro Shiba. When they arrived at the caravan two Crane samurai were there and mentioned the Crane Emerald ambassador had urgent business with the man that was going by Doji Hoto. Only later, after Shiba Sono sama, the Phoenix Emerald ambassador took charge of the unconscious members we’d returned. That they learned the man they had known as Doji Hoto was an imposter!

The only things shared with the real Doji Hoto was the given name and a remarkably similar face. The ronin known as Hoto was from a disgraced Doji family forced to live as ronin. He was sentenced to serving aboard the Mantis ships to re-earn his honor. Since he had helped slay Oni, and lift the curse of Mori Kage Toshi. Donoha san hid his emotions well with a small smirk, but that lie gnawed at him and helped to shape some views he held onto later.

The group was introduced to Asako Eiko, whom served at the temple of the Eternal Flame for decades. She was to be the liaison between the group of whispered heroes and anything they need at Shiro Shiba. Set to retire after the caravan leaves this is her final act as one of the most trusted members of the community.

From her the samurai learned about the Whispering Grove hot springs. Tucked away in the verdant hills surrounding Shiro Shiba, a serene and mystical woodland shrouded in ancient mystery. It is said towering cedar trees stretch skyward, their branches forming a natural canopy that filters sunlight into dappled patterns upon the forest floor. Soft moss carpets the ground, muffling footsteps and lending the grove an air of tranquil solitude.

At the heart of the Whispering Grove stands the Spirit Pool, a crystal-clear pool fed by a natural spring that bubbles up from the earth below. It is said that the waters of the Spirit Pool possess magical properties, granting visions and insights to those who bathe or drink from its sacred depths.

The Spirit Pool is where nearly each member of the group wandered off to. Donoha san wanted to ask Airi san a question about an item they had yet to talk about. She accepted and headed straight to the Spirit Pool hot spring. Donoha san got a spare change of clothes to get into before going himself. All I got out of Donoha san though was the water was hot and his face would become flush as he mumbled about how correct Airi san is. I am still waiting to hear from Airi san her version of the conversation between her and Donoha san.

The Dragon spent the rest of the day reading of the Tao of Shinsei in the Hall of Eternal Wisdom. He learned of the location from Asako Eiko sama, she made sure he returned to a copy waiting in the room they had given him. In fact everyone returned to something they wanted to see or asked about. Though none more so than Bayushi Airi san, whom returned to Seia san kneeling just inside the door!

At dinner that night everyone learned that Isawa Kyoko san along with the unconscious shugenja. Whom we learned was Isawa Samamosuke san, and a small group of Shiba yojimbo. Were escorting the scroll that had been borrowed from Agasha Yuzuki back to her. Out of everyone this relieved Donoha san the most, his promise was being kept.

Scroll of Kitsuki Donoha Part 20

THROUGH A SPIRIT WORLD DARKLY

As though everything accomplished so far wasn’t enough. During the Hour of the Boar (Hida 10pm-Midnight) a kami of the air appeared as a small twister whose voice was a combination of wind and debris spinning around and clashing into one another. It was likely from the Oracle of Air after having encouraged her to lift the curse. It offered us a chance to witness the Dark One’s ultimate dream. Bayushi Airi san was having trepidations as this could be a trap. Donoha san wanted information on what Fu Leng the Dark One would consider the worst thing it could do.

Eventually the information about their enemy won out and the Scorpion, Dragon, Lion, and the Crab were given jade pendants allowing each to see the aura of a person they were looking at! You could see the taint or purity of one’s soul. The Crane was put to sleep because in this “other world” the Emerald Champion has not had any children. So he could not go to a world he never existed in. Another would join them once they arrived. As they accepted their pendants the wind kicked up a enough to make everyone cover their eyes. When it cleared they were standing in a shrine!

They had arrived in this alternate world’s Cliffside Shrine located just outside of monastery of Sanpuku Seidō. The last stop north and east in the Phoenix lands before facing the rest of the Great Wall of the North mountains. Located within these peaks via winding trails and nestled amongst pine trees the shrine is connected by a stone bridge. The monastery was roughly two city blocks of Otosan Uchi in size. The four samurai appeared around a lone Scorpion bushi whom had been meditating. Introducing himself as Bayushi Hitamukina, the others returned the gesture. Donoha san might have been a little to excited adding “i’m an investigator…” to his introduction.

===================================
Picture from the Legend of the Five Rings Game
===================================

They had quickly gathered onlookers as appearing out of thin air was never a common occurrence in our world or this alternate version of history. Especially since the shrine only has one feasible way into it via the stone bridge from the monastery. The eldest among the shugenja approached as the introductions were wrapping up. While trying to be polite they wanted to know if they were of the shadow.

Now the pendants allowed our four interlopers the ability to see the auras of those present. Everyone except Bayushi Hitamukina san had a faint, light gray aura where the scorpion’s was a bright green jade color. It would seem taint of shadow in this alternate world was much more pervasive. Our group was beginning to understand what Fu Leng’s darkest dream would be. It only got worse from there the longer they stayed.

The elderly Shugenja of the Kaito vassal family to the Isawa proposed a duel with a bushi trained monk by the name of Kaito Tofu san. The Dragon asked if anyone would mind if he took this challenge. No one objected and he took his place in the very small courtyard of the shrine. All of the other monks and shugenja gathered around as witnesses and spectators. Kaito san and Kitsuki san sized each other up and both nodded that their assessment of each would not be enough to stop the duel and acknowledge a victor. They were both in the center stance of focus before the strike.

Then a flash of the copper hamon of the Dragon’s blackened steel blade shone brightly in the setting sun. What had stunned everyone was the deliberate sakabato, or reverse hand draw as though he intended to strike with the mune blunted side of his katana, Mittsu Tamashi. Very much like the stinger of a scorpion he struck Kaito Tofu san’s left hand holding his blade’s saya with just the kissaki tip. There were five hyper quick flicks of his wrist holding Mittsu Tamashi. All of this happened in the span of Kaito san only getting his blade a tenth of a shaku out of his saya!

By the time it was halfway out he was returning Mittsu Tamashi to it’s saya! Kaito Tofu san looked back his left hand finally realizing what happened. The monks and Tofu san were astonished to see not only had he drawn first blood and won but the Dragon had written the kanji for peace 平 on the top of his hand with Tofu san’s own blood!

“May there be peace between us,” uttered a bowing Kitsuki Donoha san.

After this display leaving nearly everyone speechless, Kaito Tofu san returned the bow while Bayushi Hitamukina san gives a whisper to Akodo Asahi san, “Your cousin said he was an investigator! (with awe)”

Akodo Asahi san whispered back to Bayushi Hitamukina san, “He is, he investigates all things, to include how best to swing his katana.”

A look given to Bayushi Airi that implies that he has questions…
…Bayushi Airi san returned a slight smile to Hitamukina san but said nothing.

With the concerns dealt with everyone was brought inside the monastery across the bridge. They were able to bathe finally after the days of fighting. Their gear was tended to by the monks that had been smiths and tradesmen among the Phoenix clan of this alternate world. Rice was had and drink shared. Fish had been available since the shrine was not far from the coastline. It was a wonderful respite from the battlefield of Mori Kage Toshi against the shadow of our world.

During the Hour of the Rat (Togashi Midnight-2am) their rest was interrupted by a raid of Shadowland Oni! The small town sized monastery had alarm bells ringing throughout giving our samurai time to get ready before heading out. Coming into the chaos of smaller armored cockroach-like Oni running through the pathways and a single, larger, multi-armed insectoid, Oni that looked like an overseer directing their efforts. Quickly flanking our group from both sides when they noticed Hitamukina san. It would appear the monsters were looking for HIM!

It became clear that with their jade aura, Hitamukina was someone the Dark Lord wanted stopped. However, Hiruma Gombei san was the all knowing sage for this encounter. Their knowledge of the Shadowlands allowed them to explain these creatures would have had to infiltrate the country months ago. What’s more they had a weak spot in their armored carapaces at the small of their back! This was the turning point for our group as tactics could change to help even the field.

The Dragon, Crab, and Lion focused on the group closer to the large, multi-armed insectoid, Oni. Bayushi Airi took their bow to the roof of the closest building to provide ranged cover from above. A few of the multi-armed, insectoid, Oni followed her. Bayushi Hitamukina headed to the rear of the group to protect their backs from three of multi-armed, insectoid, Oni closing in.

While it is no mistake the Crab excelled at crushing the human sized, insectoid, Oni. Both the Lion and the Dragon had their fair share of Oni they took care of. The Lion and Crab were starting to outpace Donoha in the number of enemies slain, both being bushi it was only a matter of time. Donoha san was looking to where he could help his friends and found a spot. He threw his wakizashi from his Investigator mentor, Kitsuki Inoki sama. It slammed into one of the multi-armed, insectoid, Oni harassing Bayushi Airi san, embedding deep. This caused the Oni to miss our Scorpion archer allowing her to dance away and fire at it, sending the Oni to its end.

Bayushi Hitamukina san acquitted himself well against the Oni. The larger, multi-armed insectoid, Oni that towered over the Crab at eleven shaku to his six and a half shaku in height. The beast was felled in a group effort, but the Crab and the Lion did the most to bring it low, sending it back to Jigoku. Cries of victory began to ring out across the monastery. Those that had helped to defeat the Oni were treated as honored guests for such aid. In the later morning cresting almost to the sun’s zenith did they make their way out of the mountains. The five headed to Otosan Uchi over the next month.

7th of Bayushi in the spirit world version of Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}) The troupe of five samurai arrived in Otosan Uchi. They were given the customary treatment of all samurai with bathing and mending to their gear. Then they were given temporary kimono to wear as they were taken to a house in the inner city under the purview of this world’s interpretation of Yogo Junzo sama.

Author’s Note: To my readers I cannot stress enough this is the events in a spirit world version of a possible future for Rokugan. It should not reflect upon the people we may know and trust in the real Ningen-do.

The tale of how they arrived was related and after that first day their gear was returned but nothing further provided. The Dragon had asked about new kimono and was told, no. He graciously accepted this wisdom, but realized pushing the issue may means his death. They were provided every comfort, allowed to keep their weapons, but were “asked” to stay hidden until the beginning of Winter Court. The 38th Hantei Emperor was planning a party to celebrate Bayushi Shoju sama’s accomplishments and they were to be guests of the Scorpion Clan during the event.

Airi san, Asahi san, and Hitamukina san shared notes about each other’s worlds. Donoha san spent time trying to learn the meaning and lore of the Scorpion masks. Gombei san had possibly the most fun as he was provided women, drink, and song. It was clear to others the Scorpion were trying to learn all the could about the Crab samurai. However, he only talked about the food and delights in front of him. Being fully in the moment of bliss.

When the 14th of Bayushi in the spirit world version of Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}) had arrived. The group was escorted by Scorpion bushi to the event kicking off Winter Court. Everyone had their weapons with them but on the right side to showcase it would be harder to draw as being left handed was rare in this world as it is in ours. The group was wearing all of the gear they arrived in and more than a few found it odd to show up to court in armor.

The Jade Pendant’s the wind kami had bequeathed to the four samurai from Ningen-Do continued to show everyone possessing some level of taint of the Shadow. Aside from Hitamukina san it was only a matter of how dark a person’s aura was that distinguished them apart in that aspect. This spirit world was indeed a dark reflection of our world, because it implies the Crab clan had failed allowing the Oni across the Kaiu Kabe, or unthinkably, helped them across! Donoha san mentioned in their recounting that he wondered how much of Jigoku influenced this spirit realm.

To say what happened next was all of the hells breaking loose would not be an inaccurate statement. In this spirit world Winter Court during the awarding of Bayushi Shoju any one thing he wished for. Shoju sama requested to ask a question, which was granted. He asked for permission to take any steps necessary to prevent a dark future for the spirit world’s Rokugan. It was allowed which prompted Shoju sama to CUT OFF THE EMPEROR’S HEAD!

Bayushi Shoju then declared themselves Shoju the First! Taking the Emerald Throne as the court was thrown into chaos! The five samurai saw the son of the now late emperor dressed in white. They battled to his side and spirited the heir to the empire away. They met Akodo Toturi sama during time and while the Lion lord left to fight the insurrection. The Hantei heir told them of a secret way out of the city. Donoha san and everyone else refused to share any details about it on the off chance some of it may be real in Ningen-Do.

BREAKING THE SHADOW CURSE

27th of Akodo in 1123 (Month of the Horse)

In the morning Airi san return to their role as healer. Asahi san was a horrible patient trying to work out a battle plan with Gombei san. The Crab bushi listened and then asked why no one mentioned jade? He brought forth a finger of jade to show what he was talking about. The Dragon asked the Crane if he still had that bag of jade fingers they got from the allege person calling themself, Doji Hengo. He brought it forth and handed it to Donoha san. The Crab got a smile at all the jade and began to go over why to wear it. A piece was given to the Scorpion, Lion, Crane, and Dragon.

With five fingers of jade left, the Dragon mentioned that they could perhaps make a weapon of jade Airi san could use, a jade tanto of sorts. He mentioned it would take him the entire day, only because his pack had been recovered along with his hammer. He slowly recovered his chisels, whetstones, and his adhesives kit. This may be one of the few times people outside the Dragon clan have watched Donoha san “make” something. He took his saya (sheath) off of his katana and measured it after looking at the Scorpion and then brough his katana through it!

He picked up the piece that fell off as everyone looked at him and asked Airi san to hold it like a tanto. When she did he asked if it felt good in the hand? Nodding in the affirmative she handed it back and mentioned she kinda understood what he was going to do. His hands were a blur with the piece of wood from his saya. Asahi began preparing a meal as Donoha finished the tanto. He turned to Airi san and said, “I present Hisui Fukushū (翡翠復讐 Jade Vengeance). Underneath all the lacquer and dotsugi (copper joinery) the wood is Pale Oak. It’s from the singular tree where Hantei the XVII was buried to be next to the woman he loved, not his wife. It would seem there’s a pattern to this arc of the tale.”

Bayushi Airi san bowed their head and accepted this masterpiece of craftsmanship that everyone got to watch him make. Mixing resin adhesives, carve and shape his segregated saya into a tanto, knap and polish three jade fingers into perfectly fitting blade edges. Engraving his makers mark for the third time ever. “I will put it to good use,” was her reply.

The jade tanto was wrapped in one of Donoha san’s mint colored cloths he use for cleaning his sword. Despite some minor objections and concern for making they can mount a return to the temple tomorrow. The Lion allowed the Scorpion to scout the Temple and attempt to see what was on the second floor and if the Emerald shades had replenished their numbers. She returned and informed everyone she had seen their friends on the second floor! Arranged in a ring around yet another Maho shugenja!

There were a few more Emerald shades with him as well. Their friends looked gaunt and pale, so whatever was happening took time to finish, but they would not have long. The Lion was finishing the simple meal they would have this night. Before everyone sat down to eat, Bayushi Airi san removed their mask to enjoy the meal and relax their face. The Scorpion began to clean it and their own face. The Dragon was the first to notice and while sitting he bowed his head figuring it was an honor to see one do so among outsiders.

The Crane and the Crab swallowed a simultaneous gasp at the same time. To say her beauty was dangerous would be an understatement. The Dragon looked unmoved as the Scorpion returned their bow. Donoha san held their food and ate having nearly died yesterday and was still quite sore. There was some talk about tomorrow but the battle plans worked out by Akodo & Hiruma sans were set. They left once more after the night’s rest.

28th of Akodo in 1123 (Month of the Horse) On the final day of the Month of the Horse they made the push to conquer the shrine and return with their friends and companions. The Phoenix shugenja was made as comfortable as one could be made but they left him the building they had made their forward camp. The two dead and ripening Ogres in the courtyard made for a distinct landmark.

Resolute they climbed the steps and once they made it to the archway leading inside. The made their plan into a three prong assault. Doji Hoto san and Bayushi Airi san were to strike at the Maho shugenja once Akodo Asahi san and Kitsuki Donoha san drew the attention of the Emerald shades. Hiruma Gombei san was going to come in from or should I say through an adjacent wall!

The signal for the three groups to launch their attack was the Lion making a bird call. What he did not tell them was that it would take the form of a crane’s call. When he let loose his warbling cacophony of a call. Everyone thought it was a real bird! Even the Lion’s Dragon cousin looked around and he watched him make the call.

THWAP! An arrow flew across the room from the Lion’s bow and drew the attention of the Emerald shades and the Maho Shugenja. The blood magic caster beckoned his minions to attack with a rasping hiss for their voice, “GET THEM!” Of the six four surround the Maho user while two began to head toward the Lion and the Dragon. Donoha san had stepped just inside to lure more of them close enough for his cousin’s curse to take effect. As two more arrows found their marks in the shadow priest from the Lion’s bow, the Crab came through the wall! Yes, I mean the wall! Stopping just inside the chamber’s perimeter he attracted one of the Emerald shades toward him.

It was at this moment the Crane and the Scorpion struck! Timing their strikes Doji Hoto san beheaded the Maho shugenja and Bayushi Airi san took Hisui Fukushū (翡翠復讐 Jade Vengeance) and thrust the jade knife into a Emerald shadow, which froze it in mid swing! It could also not coalesce its form to cover the wound after being struck like that.

Despite that amazing win against the now dead Maho user and proof that Donoha san can craft a very capable jade weapon. The remain three mobile shades struck and laid them out to the near brink of death! The Dragon saw the Scorpion and Crane fall and he rushed to their rescue! Sheathing his Oath-hammer and Mittsu Tamashi, he raced over to them to drag them out of the fight. Shouldering Airi san and dragging Hoto san out of the fight. The Crab and Lion had moved closer to the center of the room with their engagement. Akodo Asahi was like water move. Deftly deflecting the raining blows from the other five specters. Their strikes being repelled as though raindrops on a tiled roof.

Donoha san mentioned to me he thought the Scorpion filled out the loaned light armor rather aptly, having a closer look draped over him. Donoha san kept Airi san on his left shoulder and went back to slay the frozen shade before setting her down and proving he’d been paying attention when she had been bandaging people. With enough focus, luck, and some newfound skill he brought her back from the brink! When she came around, he apologized to her but told her she was number ten on his list of saved damsels!

She might have had more quips if she did not have to go and tend to one of the sons of the Emerald Champion in Doji Hoto! In the background the fighting sounded muted because the shades did not make any noise. While the Lion did a masterful at defense Gombei san and later Donoha san help him to mop the the remaining shades up. The plan had in fact, worked!

As though to add more good news Airi san brought a nearly dying Hoto san back to the land of the living. Despite being a charmer one might think Hoto san is becoming enamored of the Scorpion. Donoha threw in a quip but stopped when his injured friend asked him to let him have his moment. Not a single time did Hoto san cry out in the obvious pain he was enduring.

In the glow of a victory well earned it was decided that the Crane and the Scorpion would go back. To watch over the Phoenix that had been left alone. The Crab, Dragon, and Lion would head to the second floor and face down the other Maho shugenja. Before the groups went their different paths, Airi san pulled Donoha san aside and said something to him that neither he nor she would tell me.

Anyway, the Crab, Dragon, and Lion made their way up to the second floor. There was a slightly raised area in the center with the corrupted shrine against its north side. Arrayed around the lone Maho shugenja was Seia san, Isawa Kyoko san, Shiba Ogawa san, Bayushi Akiyama san, and Matsu Shànzi san. All of them were floating about a shaku off the floor as though invisible ropes were suspending them. Upon seeing the three samurai they raised an arm and hissed their spells out. Both Ogawa san’s and Akiyama san’s bodies withered into husks dropping to the floor. Their souls visibly escaping their bodies as a white smoke and to the left of the maho user appeared the creature their sacrifice paid for. The Oni of Remembrance that Hoto san and Donoha san vanquished has been re-summoned from Jigoku! This time powered up by two souls instead of being a starving oni.

28th of Akodo in 1123 (Month of the Horse) The thing about documenting a prolonged fight is everyone getting a little tired with all of your questions about points they feel they have given you. My companions were very gracious, but I am sure being acknowledged as a rank higher than them had something to help with it. This is the section where the rescue happens!

It was decided the the Crab and the Lion would take on the Oni of Remembrance while the Dragon would tackle the Maho Shugenja. In a FLASH Donoha san was off and standing over Seia san and looking at the Maho user with his green, hazel eyes sparkling with vengeance on his mind. Mittsu Tamashi (Three Souls) in his right hand and Hisui Fukushū (Jade Vengeance) in his left. The Maho shugenja looked startled and cast a cloud of darkness only he could see within.

So began a game of Moto Marco sama, a famous Unicorn warrior that was half gaijin (outsider) but is one known for discovering hidden enemies, such was their powers of perception. To play the game one person whom is blindfolded in a room or hotspring calls out “Marco!” And, the others reply “Moto!” Then the “Marco” player tries to find and touch the “Moto” players. The touch was symbolic of the kill by Marco sama of the hidden assailant.

As this was the point where the Oni of Remembrance clawed his way through the shadowy cloud to engage the Crab and Lion. Asahi san quick with the arrow fire to begin the process of whittling it back down. In short order he dropped Kuri’s Bite, their yumi, and moved in with his katana to begin cutting as Gombei moved up with their Tetsubo. Soon after they began attacking Gombei san noticed the Lion was having better result with their katana. They moved to guard Asahi san so the Akodo could do what they do best, attack.

What I have begun to see in collecting these tales of the battles is the apparent lack of ego among the group. For all their chaffing and differences. When the koku is on the Go table they work remarkably well together! I am not just saying that because they saved my life. Even when things get frustrating they keep at it.

Donoha san is a perfect example as he and the Maho shugenja continued their very advanced and lethal game of Moto Marco. The added complexity was the moving target along with spells leveled at the blind Dragon. He suffered having his left arm go limp which was holding Hisui Fukushū (Jade Vengeance), pain which made him pause but no one recounted hearing him scream and I interviewed everyone separately. One spell actually failed to latch on to him! I’ll get to the final spell that did affect him in the battle when I catch up the others’ tales.

In this part of the fight a surprise occurred! Rarely in a skirmish is a surprise welcomed but this one was most assuredly the case. Both Bayushi Airi san and Doji Hoto san returned! Coming into the fray from opposite sides with Scorpion trying to rescue the captives and the Crane backing up the Crab and Lion with their bow. The Scorpion found the magic levitating the captives a shaku above the ground was also preventing them from being pulled away. The Crane realized the Oni he fought before had been re-summoned! He helped them put it down and its spirit was forced back to Jigoku as its material carcass rolled into the open area of the second floor.

The Crab entered the darkness and self admittedly nearly crushed me under heel. However, footwork is something most bushi are taught and clearly Hiruma Gombei san did not miss this day! The fortune of Megumi guided him away from sending me back to the cycle! By this point the Lion and Crane were guarding the south, east, and west for signs of the Maho shugenja. The Dragon and the Crab briefly met on the northeastern side of the cloud before both had plunged back in.

Only by this time Donoha had been hit with a maho spell of supernatural fear of sharp objects! So he sheathed Mittsu Tamashi and Hisui Fukushū. This way they could not harm him or anyone else. He would use Naze-do the Dragon version of Jujitsu to capture the Maho shugenja having zoned in on his sounds! He began calling out for someone to come help and kill this villain since he had him in a lock with one disabled left arm!

Airi san responded after something nicked her in the darkness. I know from Asahi san’s report that it was likely and arrow he shot into the cloud at his Itoko-san’s behest for aid. She stabbed the Maho shugenja in the throat killing them. When the cloud dropped and the still ensorcelled Donoha san saw the tanto he backed up several feet and began breathing exercises to regain composure. Those still barely alive dropped back to the ground as the faded with a subdued “thud” and no further damage.

As the spirit left the Oni’s physical form it began to crumble like before. Donoha gathered some branches from bushes in the second floor gardens. As the others were taken back to where the Phoenix shugenja was sleeping. Donoha and Asahi sans stayed behind a bit to offer the deceased burial rights in the Fortune – Megumi’s name.

Donoha san’s Haiku:
Loyal hands outstretched,
One life yields for another’s sun,
Stars whisper their names.

Asahi san’s rendition of a famous dirge sung by the artisan Saigyo in 190 by the Imperial Calender (OOC: From Saigyo in Japan 1190 AD)
I wish to die
in spring, beneath
the cherry blossoms,
while the springtime moon
is full.

All whom heard Asahi sing admitted it was beautiful as it was haunting. After which Donoha lit both bodies on fire with the branches they had collected earlier. In hopes of preventing the desecration of their bodies by dark forces. Then both of them caught up with the group.

Once back at the courtyard with the dead ogres they gathered in the abandoned house the Phoenix shugenja had been lying within. The Lion and Scorpion prepared gruel to coat chopsticks with and feed everyone slowly. They would live but had been horribly malnourished within the couple days they were captive. For now the group stopped to rest and recuperate. With gruel being made from rice rations and spoon fed to those needing sustenance.

During the rest of the day watching over their friends and comrades. Donoha san returned Hisui Fukushū (翡翠復讐 Jade Vengeance) to its owner, Airi san. The Scorpion mentioned she would repay his kindness as she mostly stayed by Seia’s side. During my interview with Airi they stated she had been referring to the part where she was able to stab the maho user in the throat because Donoha had used his jiujitsu to grapple him. Donoha thought she meant saving Seia when I was getting him to talk details. Unless he reads this he’ll never know her true intent.

The night begins its climb as the go-ri no samurai (五人の侍 five samurai) made the hard choice to leave their recovering charges for the assault on the castle of Mori Kage Toshi. Moving through the now quiet streets still with an eye out for interlopers. The cloud of fog grows denser as they ascend the switchback trail leading to their destination. Eventually making it to the castle’s gatehouse which was wide open! The signs around their suggested it remained opened more than being shut.

Peering into the courtyard to get a view of what they were up against. They noticed six of the Emerald shades stationed in pairs at the landings of the steps to the castle proper. Inky black forms that have an almost two dimensional form surrounded by a sickly green glow.

The Dragon and Crab flanked the Lion as he used his curse of the undead to pull them closer for the three of them to over-power one pair at a time. The Crane and the Scorpion were in the rearguard with yumi at the ready with cover fire and softening up the Emerald shades. Again the plan worked, mostly, because almost no plan survives contact with the enemy.

The first pair was brought in and it would appear many of the trials have awoken lessons among Donoha’s companions. Their teamwork was far more in sync with each other. The Crab learned how to swing their tetsubo more effectively. Even Airi whom was thrust into a Bowyer’s role has picked up good talent with it. You could say the fire of this crucible has forged strong samurai indeed. The pair of adversaries were dispatched before the others could make it to us.

Hoto san demonstrated their skill with a bow many times that battle. Airi san again standing with others proving how brave and versatile they are. Asahi may be one of the best defensive kenjutsu practitioners of this era. Gombei san figured out how to swing the tetsubo twice as fast helping to crush the enemy. Donoha san was the gap filler of this fight getting any stragglers trying to out flank the group. His offensive kenjutsu skills rival Asahi san’s defensive ones. During the fight he made what was perhaps the most perfectly executed strike anyone present had seen. Causing him to break into a haiku.
Whirlwind blade paints night,
No flesh to mar, just spectral shriek,
Banished to oblivion.
In the end the Emerald shades were sent back to Jigoku.

As night fully controlled the sky clouds began to make it even darker. A green light began to emanate from within them as a few began to part revealing the face of the Dark One – Fu Leng! To have a kami take the time to address a mortal directly should be a sign they are a threat to a kami’s plans. For it is rarely wise to become embroiled in the affairs of the kami directly. However, our group has taken several steps on the Go board where the kami our the players and we the pieces being moved!

He went on at length about how they had been using Mori Kage Toshi as a training ground for their disciples of maho. It appears the group had just put a stop to all of that! One wonders though how many more ruins might the Dark One be using for similar sinister plans?

The Dark One proved something to Donoha, that he had succeeded and bound three spirits to Mittsu Tamashī 三つ魂 the blade of Three Souls. When the Dark One drew forth the three spirits and made them fight us. First was Shiba Tsukasa: Tsukasa had died protecting their assigned to a Phoenix Shugenja. Second was Hida Nagahide: From fallen warriors on the Kaiu Kabe (Carpenter’s Wall) he had blades from many but the soul of Hida Nagahide had chosen bound itself to the blade. Third was Akodo Chun: From the Lion he had the current reigning Ikoma Daimyo’s wakizashi and his Yojimbo’s katana. Seeing the spirit of Akodo Chun told him that the Daimyo’s yojimbo had committed seppuku. Likely the reason he did not see him during the last Winter Court at Kyuden Ikoma.

Doji Hoto san tried to challenge Shiba Tsukasa’s ghost to a duel but it looks as though intelligence on that level was denied them. So he stepped aside and allowed the Lion, Dragon and Crab line up for the fight. Gombei stating a death haiku as he’s been inspired by Asahi’s singing when he saw his opponent.
In Hida’s embrace,
Death whispers with gentle grace,
Life’s final embrace.
The go-ri no samurai (五人の侍 five samurai) took similar tactics as the Crane readied their bow, the Scorpion swung out wide drawing the jade dagger, Hisui Fukushū.

The Lion faced off with the ghost of Shiba Tsukasa, the Crab took on the ghost of Hida Nagahide, and the Dragon lamented at seeing the ghost of Akodo Chun. Donoha san explained the story behind each and asked to take Akodo Chun’s ghost because he actually knew him in life. The three frontliners held their stances and actions till the spirits approached. Donoha san was the first to reclaim one of the three souls. Stating a death haiku as he too has been inspired by Asahi’s singing:
Zen focus bares teeth,
Flawless arc cleaves through malice,
Silence reclaims dawn.
Striking down the ghost of Akodo Chun before he could be hit in an all out attack. He was a testament to the Dojo of the Mirror.

The second ghost to be reclaimed was Shiba Tsukasa. Akodo Asahi san finished them off, assisted by arrows from Doji Hoto san. The ghost of Hida Nagahide was beaten down by Hiruma Gombei san and it was when the ghost stood up that the Scorpion struck throwing the jade dagger, Hisui Fukushū! There was an explosion of light and the last ghost had been reclaimed! Clattering to the crushed stone steps the jade dagger is all that remained.

As Airi san reclaimed Hisui Fukushū as the question was posed by others as to what was next. Donoha san drew forth the Crown of the Oracle of Air from one obi pouch and from his shoulder slung bag he removed a rolled scroll of some size when unfurled it was almost three shaku long! The painting showed a tree with bloody leaves and the rear side of the castle. The Dragon believed going to the rear side of the castle would reveal the tree. There they would appeal to the Oracle of Air to lift their curse.

Indeed they found the tree with more blood red and dripping either blood or a deep red sap. It was truly hard to tell which it was as they approached its base. Putting the scroll away and stabbing his katana into the dirt. Kneeling and putting the crown gently on his head. Wrapping his hands around the blade of Mittsu Tamashi he began to beseech the Oracle of Air.

He begged the Oracle of Air to lift the curse for a few reasons:

  • they had cleared the taint of evil,
  • they had the blessing of their descendant to try this,
  • if the Agasha are now in the same clan as the Shiba. Perhaps it is time for a new destiny to be made.

There was a powerful rush of Air that ran through the area and the crown vanished along with ALL of the decay and taint! The curse was lifted! For a brief time Donoha san glowed as bright as daylight, but that dimmed along with the wind’s passing and restoration of the land! Akodo Asahi san asked Donoha san for one of his books and he took a leaf and pressed it between pages in the middle. They headed back to their friends that were left in their temporary camp. An impressive way to wrap up the month of the Horse.

WHAT DOES NOT KILL YOU

26th of Akodo in 1123 (Month of the Horse) – Matsu Shànzi (yep, that’s me) As the hour of the Goat (2-4 PM) crested into its turn for the afternoon. The gloom of the location made it seem much later. The Lion, Crane, Scorpion, and Dragon fine themselves at the end of a rest from a battle. The plan was hastily made but it worked far better than expected. It is often cited that no plan survives contact with the enemy but this one pretty much followed the beats of a dance. Prisoner is rescued, most wounds are mended, and tea was had. They are awaiting the rise of their new Phoenix companion before moving out. Not sure when that will be it was decided Doji Hoto san would stay behind with the Phoenix shugenja while the rest of us press on ahead.

Upon entering a courtyard that had a stream running through it. The trio came upon an emergent combat scene. A tall samurai – almost six and a half Shaku – was beginning to engage with one of three Emarald Shades they have seen prior. The Lion ordered his Dragon cousin forward as the Scorpion and he readied their bows and began practical training for Airi san. They had studied kyujutsu when they were young but this yumi bow was a stark reminder of how long ago that was.

“I thought Eiji went home,” mumured Donoha san, “must be someone else. This one has wany more hair on their head and I don’t see any Nezumi.”

Leave it to the Kitsuki to see a battle and run up to the samurai within as though they had been long wartime companions. He was not quiet with his greeting to his new, and very large brother-in-arms. The world’s strangest Dragon samurai he is indeed. Arrows from Asahi san and Airi san began to chase down their forward companion. Raining injuries upon the shades, as Donoha nearly finished one off while the Crab was engaged wwith another. The shades made no noise so the battle had an eerie quiet to it, save for the shifting of feet, swings of weapons, and the twanging song of the two yumi.

This time it was Donoha san that got the assist from one of Asahi san’s arrows finishing off the shade but consuming the arrow in the process. Being freed up he spun around the Crab and killed the one hanging on by a thread and then came to rest at the last one. The Crab looked infuriated!

The Crab samurai crushed the last shade in a single blow!

Exchanging names the trio were now acquainted with Hiruma Gombei 蛭間 権兵衛, a bushi warrior of his clan. He too, bore the oft seen tetsubo the Crab are known for. Then Gombei san made a terrible mistake with this Dragon. He asked about his Crab gifted and inherited Oath-Hammer. Donoha went from mysterious to a person that had found someone that liked the same stuff they did!

Bayushi Airi san was treating Gombei san’s wounds from the blows the shades left. Never any blood just the feeling of frostbite when the inky blackness cuts you. Donoha san explained to Gombei san how his family came into possession of Chikai kodzuchi 誓い小槌 the Oath-hammer. An ancestor had defeated a Crab wielding a Kaiu blade. Rather than keeping it he took the time to learn of the family and returned it so the honor of his opponent could be nurtured in the next generation. In return they presented him with the hammer that made the blade. Its been in Donoha’s family for several generations and he was tasked with never letting it out of his sight.

Donoha san went on to explain he was developing his own version of the Dragon Niten style called O-Niten where the Wakizashi is replaced by either a kodzuchi (hammer) or masakari (one handed axe). From there he went on and explanation of the components of his sword, Mittsu Tamashī 三つ魂 the blade of Three Souls. Made from blades that had lost honor so they could restore reincarnated as Mittsu Tamashi. From the Phoenix there was Asako Katsumi & Shiba Tsukasa. Tsukasa had died protecting their assigned to a Phoenix Shugenja. Katsumi committed seppuku when he learned of the blade failing he had made. From fallen warriors on the Kaiu Kabe (Carpenter’s Wall) he had blades from Hida Shimazu, Hida Nagahide, Hiruma Kenji, Hida Moriyama, Kuni Asakura, and Yasuki Saigo. From the Lion he had the current reigning Ikoma Daimyo’s wakizashi and his Yojimbo’s katana. It is said the Daimyo still favors Donoha to this day. Considering he also gave him his name during their gempukku.

The dotsugi (copper joinery) saya (scabbard or sheath) prompted Gombei san to bring out a kintsugi (gold joinery) sake set that when its owner poured sake it NEVER RAN OUT! Wait till Doji Hoto san hears about that! Well not until the owner chooses to empty it. This was proof though that a item made from joinery could be awakened and have a spirit or spirits in them. Had his cousin not reminded them they were now wasting time since Airi san had finished the wound treatment, it would have been hard to stop him. From here Donoha san’s “Kitsuki Method of Ichi-Maru” tracked the path with info from Gombei san about a temple with activity in it and more shades. Once the group arrived they began to make a plan to deal with everyone before moving on to Shiro Mori Kage (Forest Shadow’s castle).

26th of Akodo in 1123 (Month of the Horse) – Matsu Shànzi (yep, that’s me)
Within the temple in the center of Mori Kage Toshi was four groups of san (three) Emerald shades each and in the center was another Maho Shugenja and six more shades. The four man team of Akodo Asahi san, Kitsuki Donoha san, Bayushi Airi san, and our newest member Hiruma Gombei san, elected to pull one group at a time since the dead seem to be attracted to the team leader, Akodo Asahi san. Then it became 4 against three. If only the Phoenix shugenja which Doji Hoto was guarding would have woken up events may not have turned out as they did. It’s hard at times to understand the Kharmic Cycle’s needs and turning of events.

After speaking with Hiruma Gombei san and Bayushi Airi san I have more respect for Donoha san and his itoko (cousin), Asahi san. In the third engagement, they had to engage with Emerald shades within direct sight of the Maho shugenja and their six shades. Since the shades make no noise they used hand signals and fought a slow withdrawl to drag them to an area to dispose of them! That is nine Emerald shades at this point the group had subdued due to their desire for Asahi’s flesh. However this battle of attrition took a heavy toll on our brave warriors. Asahi san was laid unconscious during that engagement and were it not for the healing arts of Bayushi Airi san they would have likely died.

My readers may forget that when you are stabbed by an Emerald shade. It pierces through all your garments and leaves no mark other than stinging frostbite on your bodies! You die from being frozen to death! When Asahi san came about no one pointed fingers about whom did or did not do something. There was a collective sigh and discussion about working on finding better timing.

This did not deter our group from going after the fourth group of the Emerald shades. They re-entered the temple once again, made it pass the Maho shugenja and the six Emerald shades protecting him for some dark purpose. The droning of chants echoed throughout the temple as the Maho shugenja was absorbed in their ritual.

Donoha and Gombei seem to develop a competition at first as to whom could get more shades. It quickly turned into one would weaken the shade and other would finish it off! Donoha was putting out comparable damage to a Crab samurai and their tetsubo! More often than not Asahi would have to hold off six strikes while the others finished off the Emerald shades. Less we forget the rise of the Crimson Archer – Bayushi Airi san! Her prowess with Hoto san’s loaned yumi bow was growing through trial by fire!

In order to reach the final grouping of the outer shades they had to scale a few crumbling walls. Once they caught Asahi’s scent they tried to walk through the stone wall to no avail. However, they put what passed for a foot on the wall and began to walk up and over it! In the cramped quarter the final Emerald shade laid low an already injured Asahi! When Donoha came for vengeance he injured but was taken down as well! Bayushi san saw the first strike and thought that would finish him! He stood up only to be put back down by the second strike!

Hiruma Gombei crushed the last one and together with Bayushi Airi san they took in the scene. Gombei san remembered saying, “I was supposed to be the shield, they are true swordsmen.”

Airi san inspected the bodies and Asahi san was conscious but talking in whispers! Donoha was breathing when he shouldn’t be at all! While Gombei san handled the bodies, Airi san carried his katana – Mittsu Tamashi (Three Souls) and the Oath Hammer so it would not be out of its master’s sight.

To say Doji Hoto was at a loss of words when they returned would be an understatement. The Phoenix shugenja was still convalescent and not awake. Introductions were made an both Airi and Gombei sans removed the Lion and Dragon’s armor. Setting it to their sides in as much a honorable fashion as could be done. Mittsu Tamashi (Three Souls) and the Oath Hammer were laid in front of the Dragon’s armor. Hoto san made tea and everyone got updated.

At the end of hour of the Monkey (Shiba; 4-6 PM) later Asahi san was awake and everyone made sure he did not move. Airi san offered her lap to rest his head when medicine needed to be taken. This way he could not choke on it or drinking the tea. In the back half of the hour of the Rooster (Bayushi; 6-8 PM), brought the sound many people were waiting to hear.

“Where is my sword and hammer?”

Donoha san open his eyes and rolled his head in the opposite direction of Airi san’s voice when she said, “Over there with your armor.” The Scorpion repeated the same treatment for Donoha but kept exclaiming he should be dead. He mused at the thought of the Kami of good fortune still favoring him.

Scroll of Kitsuki Donoha Part 17

This brings us back to the present day, 24th of Akodo in 1123 (Month of the Horse). We’re a few hours outside of Toshi no Omoidoso and have come to a larger bridge usable by those on the Emperor’s Road. The sides bridges that others used had scouts saying Shadowland Shades had been seen. Many of the samurai were divided up and sent to each of the bridges. I found out from one of the aids (who bought my book), Donoha san was assigned to Akodo Asahi san’s group, which also had Bayushi Airi with them as well.

While all groups did encounter shades that appeared to learn from the Battle of the Emerald Shades and have better tactics. It was Akodo Asahi san’s group that had something different happen. I’m telling you, some kind of epic destiny follows Donoha san! The dead shades tried to deliberately go after Asahi san! So Asahi san used that feature to make himself bait, so his companions could attack from flanking! Then the shades merged into a giant, singular, version of the shades when they were getting hurt heavily.

What is even more exciting was hearing about Bayushi Airi san jumping into the fray with just wielding knives! She stood toe to toe with Donoha san in the battle! In fact, the aide that brought in the report said that he got the details from Donoha san. When I asked what he did, of course he did not brag about anything regarding himself and chose to talk up his teammates. I gave the aide the low down on what Donoha san likes to do about bragging, and they nodded saying they’ll pass that info along.

This is a new world for me and him growing their legend.

25th of Akoko in 1123 (Month of the Horse) – The caravan was able to keep moving thanks to the efforts of those involved with clearing the bridges. It was the Hour of the Hantei (Serpent / 10am-Noon or Zenith) when the caravan of 93 wagons ground to a halt. The team being sent to Mori Kage Toshi was assembled and the gear requested was handed out. The only one whom got the servant request filled was Doji Hoto san. It was only four heimin and myself to maintain the tents and cooking. It was also the only four that did not shirk when the destination was mentioned. They also managed a number of the other pack horses. The Forest Shadow City team:

  • Akodo Ashi san
  • Bayushi Airi san
    • Seia san
  • Kitsuki Donoha san
  • Doji Hoto san
  • Isawa Kyoko san
  • Shiba Ogawa san
  • Bayushi Akiyama san

Once they were separated the caravan began to lumber forward like a great serpent of legend. Heading down the path to Mori Kage Toshi our heroes quickly saw the ravages of time. Trees that appeared untouched for ages bearing the slow rot of a curse around 350 years old. A mist hung in the air as a sort of warning, “Unless one seeks danger turn back!”

At a fork in the road the group knew they would need to search for a place to sleep. Hoto san, Akiyama san, Kyoko san, and Ogawa san headed off in one direction while the remaining four followed the path forward. For several hours each group wandered and Hoto san’s group found a good spot to make camp while the other four met an ill-omened welcoming party.

The leader of the trio spoke to the group asking them what they were doing there. When our group replied they were head to the castle the three laughed. Only to stop when they realized the samurai were not joking. The dark trio revealed themselves to be followers of the ninth Kami. They offered to escort those present to the castle as brothers and sisters.

Our heroes elected to eschew their offer when mentioning they had come to apprehend Doji Hengo and try to remove the curse of the castle. The dark trio of ronin descended upon the ground and pair off with the trio. Seia san had disappeared from the area as the fight began, likely seeking safety in case she needed to warn the other group. The female of the group squared off with Bayushi Airi san on the left flank. The group’s purported leader and Kitsuki Donoha san began walking towards each other. Akodo Asahi san drew and arrow and nocked his yumi and shot between Donoha san and their opponent to hit the one on the right flank! Enraged, they began to circle around to fight the Lion samurai.

It is rare to see a battle between two people that are completely and evenly matched. Such was the situation Bayushi Airi san found themselves in with the female ronin. Wielding her red & black aiguchi in one hand and a plain black lacquered tanto in the other. She was grateful for the light armor that had been procured for her. Back and forth they went without more than landing a minor hit on each other.

Akodo Asahi san got a wonderful hit on the ronin that chose to track down to him. The only reason his life lasted that long was that he avoided Donoha san. As fate would have it he would survive the two arrows buried in him and close the distance to rokuganto (Rokugan Sword) combat range! Asahi san began to sing a funeral dirge for the ronin and you really want to hear that voice sometime! Ladies, gentleman, and every other pretty person reading this volume, Asahi san can sing and sing WELL! I don’t think I can stress the talent needed to sing in combat where breathing is crucial!

Now, I would like to explain the difference between my perspective and Donoha san’s. Donoha san’s description of his fight was and I quote, “I hit him twice and he died, he also was not good at math or strategy.” Yeah, that’s it! Thanks to other people present I can explain in greater detail.

The group’s leader had misjudge how far Donoha san could move. Donoha san had tilted his head briefly to one side and strode forward his Oath-hammer in his left and the Three Souls katana in his right. With one swing pieces of his opponent’s light armor and blood went flying! With his second hit the same thing happened again and the ronin fell! A crimson “X” beginning to soak the ground around him. Then he turned his attention to Airi san’s opponent.

In nearly the whole fight Donoha san did not speak. Now, the one whom was speaking was Airi san. She had uncovered the one Donoha san had killed was the lover of the ronin she was fighting. Her blades were her pincers but the stinger was her words! She waged two battles at the same time, one in the physical world and one in the void of the mind! As Donoha san walked up to the battle twixt Airi san and the female ronin he was becoming distracted by the battle beginning between Asahi san and his walking pin cushion of an opponent. He was so distracted that he absently swung his sword at the ronin that was trying to fend off Airi san’s strikes and words. Now again perspective is important. Donoha san recalls swinging his sword at her from the side. However, he was not actually looking at his target. The katana hit in her lower back, ripped about two sun deep (0.2 Shaku) through her light armor, and came out the front with another burst of blood! When he felt no more resistance he quickly pulled it out of that fray to avoid hitting Airi san.

As Donoha san moved off to go aid his cousin, Asahi san. Airi san did not waste the opportunity given to her and finished off their opponent with not just cutting barbs as her corrupted soul would join her lover in Gaki-Do! Donoha san had closed enough of the distance to be near a stone column in the road. He began a loud shout at the ronin to leave his cousin alone! It drew the attention of the last ronin and Asahi san, whom shot his cousin a look! Conveying the notion to stay out, this one was his!

He let the wakizashi drop back into its saya. He fished a mint colored cloth from under his scaled and shakudo clad do chest piece. Putting the Oath-hammer back in his obi. Wiping his blade clean he returned it to its saya as Airi san joined him. He leaned up against the stone column lamenting to Airi san as much as to the wind, “Please don’t make me tell my aunt her son died in battle like his father.” (edited)

When she stopped at the column he offered his copper fan he’d received from the Centipede Clan’s daimyo. She accepted and they began to talk as his cousin continued his fight. Their conversation took an unexpected turn, it began to follow the notions of love and whether or not the two ronin were really criminals. Donoha san said they had allowed their love to corrupt them. He had told Chiasa san in his vision the Phoenix Emerald Ambassador had noticed him having. That if he was ordered to marry it would be the only way he would touch another woman. Airi san retorted with, “If Chiasa san is forced to marry then would you be okay with another man touching her?”

“If that is the wish of her lord and he treats her well, then yes. My heart might belong to Chiasa san but I don’t want the person assigned to marry me to go through what the Agasha bride did with the Shiba that had fallen for an Ikoma!” His hand gesturing off in the direction of Mori Kage Toshi.

Removing the nose portion of his menpo, shoving it below his Do chest piece and looking at Airi san, “No one deserves that level of callousness from a partner. I won’t be that cruel to anyone.”

The Scorpion stared at the Dragon until they heard the voice of Akiyama san, Kyoko san, and Ogawa san. Calling out to Asahi as he had just delivered the fatal blow to his opponent! Winning their first real fight. If the Scorpion had more to say to the Dragon they chose to save that discourse for another time.

Seia san had appeared from behind her Bayushi mistress as though she had been there the whole time. As the two groups converged to congratulate Asahi san. Doji Hoto san also began to appear in the distance coming to join everyone. It decided that despite this location being a decent campsite no one wanted to sleep near decaying bodies.

Seia san had collected the katana of the fallen, specifically the lovers. Their bodies would be left to the animals of the forest to provide sustenance. Airi san made a remembrance of for the fallen lovers and Donoha san composed a haiku on the spot when she finished:

Dead lovers’ lament,
Katana’s blade stained with blood,
A hate turned to love.

The reunited group returned to the encampment Hoto and his four, loaned, Crane servants had set up everything. The surprise of a hot spring within the encampment was a joyous surprise to those that had not seen it before. Akiyama san and Hoto san had arranged everything with the four servants on loan to the Crane. It was an impressive encampment to behold!

Airi san offered to help Donoha san with removing his armor, and he graciously accepted. Both Seia san and Airi san got a chance to see the armor box with a unique mon that was also on the waist plate of Donoha san’s scaled Do chest plate. His clan’s mon was where his heart would be. The Kitsuki family mon was on the left shoulder while the mon for the Dojo of the Mirror was on the back of the left shoulder plate.

What caught both women a bit off guard was the reverence he paid to the smithing hammer with Crab designs etched into the head. The one he would wield in his left hand during fights as though he’d replaced his wakizashi with it to perform Niten. No matter what was being removed from him the hammer was either in his field of vision or he was holding it. Even down to waist level undergarments so he could go and bath. The hammer never left him, not even when he helped undo a few catches on Airi’s armor before leaving them in his tent so they could take care of their preparations in privacy.

Stools and buckets had been setup by the hot springs for washing before the soak. Scars people don’t normally see were on display. The one below the left collar bone and the other one going from his right shoulder to to left side of his stomach. He did not talk much during the soak but when he shut his eyes in the hot springs the hammer was present and gripped in one hand or the other, constantly.

Eventually Airi san, Kyoko san, and Ogawa san joined. The Dragon asked about his cousin, to which the Phoenix shugenja mentioned the Lion had been fully healed of wounds. Asahi joined the soak shortly after this. Both of the ladies began to tease Ogawa over how he likes me but Donoha came to his rescue after an hour or so. He mentioned guard duty and that he would start it. Ogawa would patrol just Kyoko’s tent but Donoha san would go first and Akiyama san would go second. His cousin had retired and he stuck his head in during his meditation letting know he’d get the third watch.

He told Akiyama san later that they would split the shift and let Asahi sleep. The Scorpion was fine with this and so night fell upon the caravan. When Donoha san went back to his tent he found a red cloth and threaded it into his menpo’s neck plates to be sure he’d ask Airi san about it later. He slept in most of his armor which proved to be advantageous upon awakening.

A cackling sound came for the woods across the fire pit from the tents. A type of half Human, half Oni not seen before by the tree leans back with his hand on his stomach, the other clutching the peculiar glowing orb. His deep laughter chills to the bone on an otherwise clear and pleasant night. His laughter fades, but his grin does not, as he gestures toward the campfire that still burns in the deep hours of the night.

Shadows pour forth like a fog that begins to envelop the area. Each breath becomes encased in frost as movement is slowed…then halted…

The shadows twist about the campsite as vision fades into darkness, souls wrapped in torment!

No one was quite certain what had just happened when the shadows cleared. Nor was this the time to talk about any horrors the shadow magics had borne down upon them. They endured and came out the other side. Now was the time to deal with their interloper. Upon the hill stood the Maho Shugenja screaming, “Hanjen does not fail! How are they coming to?!?”

As our heroes came to their senses they saw the Maho Shugenja stab their hand with a finger nail of the other hand! The smaller hot spring in front of them began to glow green and bubble! Out of the eerie water arose three glowing specters thought banished to the realms beyond! The faces bore no emotion and unlike the last dead spirits they encountered these three did not appear drawn to Asahi san. The ronin couple Hayashi and Reika, along with their companion, Matsuda, began to move to various target suggesting that either the other incident was a one off event or these are not undead specters!

The Maho Shugenja began to weave another dark piece of bloody spellcraft. Donoha san said he would hold would hold off the three specters if everyone could go and attack the blood magic user. Airi san seemed doubtful but Donoha san assured her it would not be the first time. As he moved in Matsuda met the Dragon’s advance! As the spell finished manacles of dark, rusty iron burst from the ground and ensnare the Doji Hoto san, trapping him and holding him in place! Rendered immobile and helpless, unable to take any physical actions. He mentioned it would be nice if someone could cut these chains off.

The ronin specter’s blade flashed crossed the Dragon’s heavy armor but could not find purchase. Airi san moved to help free Hoto san and was successful! However, the Crane had a look of terror for when the spell was broken, the manacles melted away into a disgusting black ooze. Seeping into the kimono they were wearing!

While this was going on the Reika’s specter was going after Asahi san. This was due to the Lion bushi firing an arrow into the Maho Shugenja and then watching it turn into a black piece of blood that glopped onto the ground. Donoha’s second swing decapitated Matsuda and he turned his attention back to Hayashi whom had moved up on Hoto san and Airi san. Each of them had landed a hit but Hoto had received some wounds of his own. Mittsu Tamashi flashed once more leaving vaporous reflections of black and copped as it finished off Hayashi. While both the Crane and Scorpion moved to end the Maho Shugenja. Donoha checked in on his Itoko-san (cousin), and with a grunting nod Donoha left him to finish off Reika’s specter.

As he turned to head off to the villain on the hill he saw the effect of another blood spellcrafting. Airi san’s left left leg had been withered and she was being forced to drag it to move forward! Even Donoha had his soul withered, making it easier to kill him! As a comparison his great pooto falcon, Shirogane, and he were about the same durability now! The group was getting a first hand lesson why maho magics were dangerous and corrupting because resisting them did not appear possible! Doji Hoto san then threw his wakizashi and hit the Maho Shugenja! Follow up by a tanto from Bayushi Airi!

During these attacks Kitsuki Donoha pushed forward knowing his life was more fragile than ever. Trusting his armor would do its job given it had been assembled from various pieces of Seppun Miharu armor. The Miharu are the Imperial legions after all. Being a good judge of distance he was able to not impede the thrown attacks and in a battle of wills managed to break the Maho Shugenja’s focus (Out of Character = Spent a Void to raise initiative and made the NPC do it as well so they could not use it during the round) and bring it to the dragon. Even with all that you can imagine what happened next. I’ll even describe the way Donoha told me.

“I assisted Doji Hoto sama and Bayushi Airi san in their work and finished off the Maho user.”

You can trust in one thing always with Kitsuki Donoha san. He’ll never boast about himself and he’ll always defer to his companions in terms of glory. Now let’s revisit this from the version his companions shared. Donoha made a single slash that started at the left collarbone. Through the ribs and almost coming out the right side, but he turned it similar to a seppuku twist and freed Hoto’s wakizashi. Continuing back left through the ribs and stomach he knocked Airi’s tanto free. Then another twist and back right and out over the right hip!

It should be noted shortly before the foul maho user was cut down they had inflicted another curse! Pain was wrought upon Doji Hoto san and the Crane resisted showing him any, and I mean ANY sign of pain! Even though he’d been knocked down! The Emerald Champion should be proud of this son, their honor is strong indeed!

After their death, the Maho Shugenja and their spell effects turned into black colored blood and seeped into the ground. The wakizashi was laid next to Doji Hoto san, and the tanto returned to Bayushi Airi san. Donoha san cleaned Mittsu Tamashi and tossed this cloth in the fire, which made it flicker weird colors before buring off an acrid smoke that dissipated over a short time.

They sat around the fire until Akodo Asahi san noticed the lack of sound. They began to look around with Kitsuki Donoha san while Bayushi Airi san tended to Doji Hoto san’s wounds. In the other part of the encampment Donoha san was able to find footprints thanks to their training in the Nazado (Investigation) – Ichi Maru (First Glance). He started to act out the battle and was able to tell his cousin whom was he was imitating based on the stances, depth of foot print, sized of imprint, and spacing of feet.

What caught the Dragon off guard was the sudden stop of the battle and EVERYONE else walking off to the castle of Mori Kage Toshi! They must not have woken up from the dark cloud and are still under some form of spell. He explained to Asahi san they have poked the proverbial tiger. Their enemy is actively marshalling forces against them which is telling in its own way. Donoha was even able to confirm Seia san’s location in the woods before she too, just walked off to the castle as they were heading back.

When they had arrived Hoto san looked to be in much better shape than when the Lion and Dragon had left. The Crane recommended the Scorpion’s hands as “soon to be legendary” since Asahi san was still suffering from the battle with Reika’s specter. When Donoha mentioned knowing Seia had gone to the castle along with the other because they did not wake up like the four of them did. Airi san was quick to suggest going after everyone, even if that meant her going alone. While Donoha was fine with a glorious death in service to the Empire, that seemed like a foolish errand and tossingg your life away was wrong because it was not in service to your lord.

Hoto san got caught off guard when Asahi san did not use “sama” with him. They talked about it Doji Hoto presented Akodo Asahi with the fan from Moshi Jukio sama, Daimyo of the Centipede clan, when they offered to do so. It was emblazoned with the clan mon. Made with tempered copper from the Dragon lands, or more succinctly, Donoha san’s family copper mine.

================================
I edited the one from the L5R site ( https://l5r.fandom.com/wiki/Tessen ) to add the clan’s mon. Then toned the color to give it a copper feel.
================================

When Donoha suggested leaving in the morning so some of the wounds could mend. The rest felt they would not have such time. He promptly agreed to follow the mission leader’s direction. Akodo Asahi declared everyone should gather what they need and they head out afterwards. Donoha suggested then a preparatory tea ceremony to Megumi, the Fortune of Heroic Inspiration. Everyone was on board for this idea and Doji Hoto san brought out their chrysanthemum tea. While Akodo Asahi san brought out his father’s tea set.

With great care and even greater skill, Hoto san prepared the chrysanthemum tea. Its been said in the last book that they could teach a class on how to do this correctly. Akodo Asahi was given the honor as the mission leader to determine if it was good. In quick measure everyone was sampling Hoto san’s handiwork. Rejuvenated in body and soul, the quartet head out to Mori Kage Toshi.

26th of Akodo in 1123 (Month of the Horse) – Matsu Shànzi (yep, that’s me)

As the Hour of the Tiger (4-6 AM) crested into its turn for the day the Lion, Crane, Scorpion, and Dragon move towards the abandoned but not deserted castle of Mori Kage Toshi. Clearly, the fight they had with the maho shugenja, Hanjen, and the trio of ronin has proven it is very much alive in nefarious fashion. Tired but riding on tea and determination they made their way into the city. The came across another group of seven Emerald Shades and two Ogres guarding a person in what looked like Phoenix shugenja robes.

Donoha san wrote a set of haikus describing the battle, enjoy them.

☯☯☯☯☯☯☯☯☯☯☯☯

Mori Kage Toshi weeps,
A city of shadows deep,
A call for samurai’s sweep.

Through the haunted gates,
Four samurai, hearts ablaze,
To cleanse Mori’s haze.

A lone shugenja stands,
Drawn to Mori’s mournful plea,
Five swords seek to be free.

Roar of the lion,
Strategist’s mind weaves victory,
Foes fall to the plan.

Crane’s arrow takes flight,
Piercing the spirit’s dark heart,
Evil fades to light.

Agile Scorpion,
Dagger flashes, troll’s flesh rips,
Evil’s bane stands tall.

Crane’s swift wings unfurl,
Katana’s flash, a foe falls,
Honor’s light ablaze.

Sharp blade swiftly gleams,
Troll’s roar echoes through the night,
Headless beast falls still.

Amidst the clashing swords,
A warrior’s song pierces air,
Courage knows no fear.

Lion swordsman’s stance,
Seven foes press, blades clashing loud,
Reinforcements charge.

Dragon’s fierce embrace,
Shields Lion’s roar from harm’s way,
Kin’s unwavering bond.

Dragon’s fiery wrath,
Crane’s wings slice through the mist,
Evil spirits fade.

Scorpion’s stealthy crawl,
Through shadows deep, hope takes hold,
Freedom’s grasp eludes.

Through moonlit pathways,
Crane’s wings unfurl, aiding the quest,
Together, hope blooms.

Scorpion’s touch so light,
Mending wounds with skillful art,
Healing’s gentle grace.

Through haunted streets they stride,
Katana gleaming, shadows hide,
Mori’s taint shall subside.

So they freed the Phoenix Shugenja from seven emerald shades and two ogres. At this point they were all hurt again to varying degree except for Doji Hoto san. Slaying an Ogre in a single strike and working with Bayushi Airi san on the other is no small feat! Again Bayushi Airi san rushed headlong into battle against a set of foes that would make many a courtier quake. Their bravery is to be commend as much as the healing they provided later. Even Doji Hoto san aided his companions in mending wounds! Donoha apologized that he had a bit of a hard time fitting that part into the haiku report.

I don’t think any Lion could appreciate a fan given as a gift any more than Akodo Asahi san. With it they held off seven undead samurai assailants until the Crane and Scorpion could finish off the ogres! Now that’s to say Donoha did nothing, as his own grand haiku tells he fought his way to his Itoko san (cousin) and then weathered a hit that would have ended the Lion’s life. Those two are a frightening pair as much as the Crane and the Dragon. It was noted by the Crane that Donoha mastered his feints in heavy armor. When the Crane came to reinforce the Lion. I think the group actually enjoys seeing the Crane and the Dragon talk like lifelong friends or an old married couple.

Now to a final reflection on the Grand Haiku of the Assault of Mori Kage Toshi. The Lion devised a plan and it carried out exactly as they intended. He and Donoha held up the seven emerald shades because dead things appear to be drawn to Akodo Asahi san’s chi! Once the others dispatched the ogres the Scorpion went to secure the Phoenix prisoner and the Crane to help eliminate the emerald shades. We have a battle leader in our midst and on the rise!

After an intense discussion about not having time to wait for rest to save everyone here were the major viewpoints:

  • Doji Hoto san and Bayushi Airi san felt the captives (of which, I am among them) may not have much time.
  • Kitsuki Donoha san felt that their lives were not theirs to throw away since they belong to their lords and Tanetsu sama had not sent him there to die but to succeed.
  • Un-named Phoenix shugenja was still in need of care to wake up.
  • Akodo Asahi was the arbiter and final call as to what the group would do next.

It was decided to rest because if they had wanted to kill everyone then they would have done so back at camp. Whatever the Maho users were planning would need time. They had also removed one of the group’s maho users and some of their forces in the three engagements since entering the woods. So they spent four Hours of Hare (6-8 AM), Dragon (8-10 AM), Serpent (10 AM-Noon), Horse (Noon-2 PM), taking watch and resting. Wounds mended prior to rest were checked and re-applied upon getting up for the next leg of the journey.

Scroll of Kitsuki Donoha Part 16

The Lion, The Scorpion, and some wardrobe

After hearing the recounting of the vision, the Ambassadors conferred amongst themselves. They returned to announce that the quarantine will continue until this evening, where their respective Ambassadors would meet with them, the scribe Matsu Shànzi to discuss the situation and give further direction. Either Donoha or Hoto’s wagon may be chosen. It would be moved outside of the caravan’s grouping for the duration.

It was then they announced that two samurai recently arrived that morning would be assigned to the group. Bayushi Airi of the Scorpion clan and Akodo Asahi of the Lion clan. I should point out earlier during his waiting for the Ambassadors small conference he had made eye contact with the Lion samurai in question and gave a small nod which was returned!

The Crane ambassador, Asahina Tadane sama, offers the aid of her attendants and care. The Crab Ambassador calls upon the Kuni witchhunter to accompany. The Lion ambassador calls upon a retinue to stand guard over the place of quarantine. Arrangements were made immediately as the two new samurai joined our group!

At wagon Donoha sama had loaned to Hoto sama because we were low on people in our group. The Crane attendant took all of our clothing and explained it would be mended and cleaned to be like it was new. We three were tended to and refreshed. All three of us were given simple white kimonos, with a simple rendition of any relevant mons above the heart, and encouraged to keep our weapons with us. The attendants fed all five of us and provided jade petal tea, as well as a jade sliver to be worn as a pendant. The jade’s color did not shift in the slightest.

Ladies you missed a wonderous sight of Donoha disrobing! Bayushi Airi san and Akodo Asahi san got a good peak. Akodo Asahi san kept finding reasons to be very interested in the floor of the grand wagon we were in. Airi san even got a show when Hoto sama changed into the white kimono’s as well! The crane is one handsome man even I have to admit where Donoha’s appearance gives off the “a warrior with a troubled past looking for love” vibe.

OH MY FORTUNES! The hits just keep coming!

Akodo Asahi sama and Kitsuki Donoha sama are cousins! Donoha sama’s father Kitsuki Orochi was arranged to the then Ikoma Hana at the wedding of his younger sister Kitsuki Hotaru to Akodo Isoroku. Making her then Akodo Hotaru. Sadly, I picked up on a problem when Donoha clearly only asked how his cousin’s mother was doing. I learned later from Airi san that Asahi sama’s father had died in battle.

They both have long dark hair and similar mannerisms as you see when they both try to avoid looking where they feel they should not. Strap up reader because – HERE WE GO! Extra helping of spicy! I know its frowned upon for a Lion to have a Scorpion friend, but I am starting to really like Bayushi Airi!

I thought Hoto sama was a good courtier but wow is Airi smooth and unassuming. The cousins shared some tales about their previous encounters. We started sharing stories about the arts and Asahi sama apparently quite the singer. Donoha sama seemed relieved remembering their last encounter at a Winter Court left him with hoarse voice. When Asahi sama spoke about the Tao of Shinsei his cousin’s reaction was so shocked it almost made it seem like he didn’t know Asahi sama could read! Laughter was had in this private wagon.

Hoto sama would rouse periodically and then fall asleep again. As the topic turned to crafts it did not take long for Airi to direct the flow of the conversation to learn what she wanted. And here it comes, drum rolls in our heads!

She got Donoha sama to talk about Mittsu Tamashi (Three Souls), the eight-man-cut katana! Everyone had grabbed space on the four beds to talk and get to know each other. Donoha removed his katana from his obi which still had his Oathhammer in the front and his Wakizashi in the back. While still in its saya (sheath) tip to the floor and removed it about half of its blade length.

He was explaining where each piece he made came from. When Bayushi Airi san leaned forward to get a good and close look at the sword. To say politely, Airi san is endowed enough to make a geisha blush and while her kimono was on snug and proper. I am sure some men would have murdered Donoha sama to get the view he had.

As calm and serene as he wanted to project, Seia san (Airi san’s handmaiden), myself, and well, Airi san could see Donoha sama’s neck muscles straining to lock eyes with her and not look below her nose. The struggle was indeed real!!! Now why Donoha had a tendency to look up and away his cousin immediately found the floor off in a corner of the wagon fascinating!

Meanwhile Airi san was able to study Donoha’s face up close, see that Asahi sama and he had a lot of similar features. Asahi favored a more pronounced, but groomed, beard. Both Donoha sama and Asahi sama take care to groom their long night black hair. Asahi sama weaves a number of golden colored silk cords through a warrior’s braid over the rest of his hair. A common trait among my clan when I dyed my hair completely the color of golden wheat.

She got to examine the black blade of Donoha sama’s katana, the dark waves of folded steel held forever apart from the harder steel edge by the copper hamon line. There was no other katana like it. She got to examine his scar on the left side of his face at the same time. She’d learn later that he’d acquired it, the silver and copper tooth, and the wound in his upper left shoulder by saving the first lady on his list. The daughter of the Ikoma Family’s Daimyo. However he did not know her identity at the time. As far as he knew she could have been a commoner or eta and yet he leap to their defense and safe return!

On the outward side of the tsuka, when worn off horseback, was blade edge up in saya. That side had the Phoenix an Lion menuki. On the other side was the Crab menuki. These were the three clans that contributed blades to Donoha’s gempukku. Donoha had not slighted the Crab with their menuki placement. He wanted to honor the Crab standing alone on the wall for centuries. Below the green silk wrapping was black rayskin he acquired on his prior visit to Toshi no Omoidoso.

What surprised everyone was not that Donoha had made the blade, but he crafted ALL of his katana! He made the Tsuka, Habaki, Tsuba, Seppa spacers above and below the tsuba. The fuchi collar and kashira pommel all of it based on copper and adorned in dragon motifs covered in shakudo gold. He wrapped his tsuka and the saego cords (he keeps two in case he’s riding and one snaps.

He’s also been practicing Hojojutsu with them as well. It is the art of binding an opponent without killing and minimal harm to them. He’s gotten better with rope knots from begining to learn the drums and tuning them with cord tension.

His saya was no different. The center strip was put together with dotsugi (copper joinery; using gold is kintsugi), and broken green marble. If you want to understand Donoha the saya is the best place to start. every piece was considered cast off parts from other artists, or broken items of green pottery and stone found along his gempukku. Nearly all of Rokugan is represented in the pieces of that dotsugi section of his saya. The koiguchi was horn given to him years ago by Otaku Kai, a friend of his in the Unicorn Clan. The design of his fittings came from katana he’d seen a Scorpion have on theirs. The Scorpion had taken the vow and became one of the Togashi’s Ise Zumi tattooed monks.

He believes his path of enlightenment will come from building objects of art to lift a person’s soul. He is a very spiritual person. However, this has also led to him finding broken things and nearly compelled to fix them. Such is how he saved his third damsel, Akodo Maki.

Airi san eventually had her answers and sat back down, and the conversation shifted to learning about each other’s clan. Donoha sama mentioned he had planned to wear his menpo mask the entire time he was in Scorpion lands in an attempt to honor them. Airi san had to correct some misconceptions he had about those masks. The way she describe their personal nature was akin to how a swordsmith describes making a sword. Then Donoha sama asked Airi san if he might have her permission to touch her chin!

It took everyone back a bit but she consented and Donoha sama walked over and took her chin in his thumb and index finger and leaned into her face and began to study her mask in detail pulling the same stunt back on her! His voice was low and softer, but all the words he was saying merely a few shaku away from Asahi sama and myself. Were about artistic lines, design choices, the shakudo ornamentation on her mask. Several times their noses were a katana’s thickness apart from each other!!!

Then she offered to show him the straps of the mask, and his cousin asked if he should leave to which the Dragon said, “No. No you should not.” He again asked for permission to touch her hair, and consent was granted. His hand grazed the back of her neck as his fingers encircled her hair to hold it to the side exposing the straps of the mask. He got close once more and from our vantage it looked as though he was whispering in her ear! However, the words were all about the pattern of the cording.

He finished his examination and released her hair and chin. When he sat back down saying, “Thank you for allowing me to examine such an exquisite piece of art.” I have to say it was lost on no one in this wagon that he did not clarify between the mask or Bayushi Airi san! She offered to teach him enough to not offend anyone by wearing a mask.

Never take Donoha sama’s compliments at face value. This man spent three years writing amazing haikus and even nested haiku’s in a larger poem. All to hide his love letters to Chiasa! Airi san mentioned he was welcomed to examine her mask at anytime in the future. I’m sure there are ladies that will read this wishing they had been born a Scorpion now.

Before the attendant came to gather us for dinner with the Daimyo. I could see Doji Hoto sama had been awake and quietly watching the interaction between Donoha sama and Airi san. It was also decided the wagons would back to male and female divisions. Seia san, Bayushi Airi san, Isawa Kyoko san, and myself in this wagon. Shiba Ogawa san, Doji Hoto sama, Akodo Asahi sama, and Donoha sama in the other.

As we were all walking to the dinner. Akodo Asahi sama asked his cousin about his scar. Donoha sama smiled and said, “Oh, that was from the first lady I saved. We can talk about it later.” Alas dinner awaits and the night has grown long.

24th of Akoko in 1123 (Month of the Horse) – Matsu Shànzi (yep, that’s me) checking in as we depart towards Shiro Shiba. Last’s night dinner was serene and yet so exciting! So this will be a small departure from Donoha san, yeah san is weird to me too. I was promoted last night to Nidan or second rank if this book ever gets traded beyond the borders of my country.

To further illustrate for those readers from other lands or gaijin. Before your gempukku, your progress is noted by kyu ranks. After your gempukku your rank in the “status” hierarchy of the samurai caste is determined by dan ranks or grades. Dan status ranks are harder because your in a mild competition with everyone of the samurai caste, as opposed to a single dojo (school).

  • 1st dan or Shodan – 初段 – Normally one might think ichidan, 一段, or first grade and you’d be right but Shodan means beginner grade applied here.
  • 2nd dan or Nidan – 弐段 or 二段 – The older kanji for “2”–弐–is usually used.
  • 3rd dan or Sandan – 参段 or 三段 – The older kanji for “3”–参–is usually used.
  • 4th dan or Yondan – 四段 – The word for four is pronounced the same as the word for death, hence Yondan is generally used in place of Shidan.
  • 5th dan or Godan – 五段
  • 6th dan or Rokudan – 六段
  • 7th dan or Shichidan – 七段 – Sometimes also pronounced Nanadan.
  • 8th dan or Hachidan – 八段
  • 9th dan or Kudan – 九段

So the reason their is no tenth rank if because that would always be the emperor or empress. The voice of heaven’s will on our world. It would also be fair to say 9th dan is unlikely something someone reaches in their life time. As Kudan would be the consort of the ruling emperor or empress, the Shogun, Emerald Champion and Jade Champion. A Legendary Hero would be Hachidan. Great Clan Family daimyo’s would be Shicidan. Most samurai would likely cap out at Godan. Anyone over that is a legend or on their way to being one.

Donoha san was particularly gracious with their praise and everyone else was as well, even the new companions of Akodo Asahi san, Bayushi Airi san, and Isawa Kyoko san. Shiba Ogawa san will still barely say a word, even when I brought out the bottle of Cherry Plum wine I had acquired to celebrate. Embracing Donoha san’s advice to treat members of a clan as individuals and not whole of their clan has made me some connections among the Unicorn.

I knew how Donoha felt about my promotion to being a Scribe of the Emperor’s Gift when he caught my attention and said, “Those ronin were hontōni ōbakamono 本当に大馬鹿者 (a really big idiot / stupid).” In a month of meeting this man my life went from having lost everything effectively, nearly getting robbed and probably raped then killed on the road. Yeah, he quite literally saved my life. Now, I have been into the Forbidden City, joined the Emperor’s Gift caravan, and been promoted to being a scribe of the caravan. My works for them will be documented in the official histories of the country. I am so blessed and honored to know him. Trust me these tales will continue as I feel anyone around him will achieve great things. Doji Hoto san (ooh that feels weird to write much less say) and he defeated an Oni on their own!

Donoha San, Asahi san, and Airi san were with Shiba Sono sama and are part of a team to investigate Mori Kage Toshi. The others on the mission are Kyoko san and Ogawa san. I made sure to leave a stylus, ink, and paper for Donoha san to notes and have them sent to me if I cannot visit him directly.

Apologies for the forced transition but at the celebration’s end I left for the bath with Airi san and her servant Seia san. It was nice to get pointers on some things from a courtier that held themselves with an air of authority. Then she gave me some tips about how to get Ogawa san to open up. Not long after I left and went to move some small items and setup my area in the wagons belonging to the leadership of the Emperor’s Gift.
