The Return and the Rot.

It was three additional days when the four samurai and their rescued companion finally made it out of Mori Isawa. Given the girl’s amnesia and chance at a fresh start he gave her his mother’s given name of Hana. After further discussion it was decided to head on the road back to the Temple of Brilliant Rebirth (Striking this from any publications to protect the victimized woman). It would allow her the grace and anonymity to start a fresh life. The temple idea was proposed by Otaku Gunba san, or as they have stated in kawaii fashion, “I’m just that Unicorn guy.” Ladies that Unicorn has manners and is humble to boot. Just so we’re clear they’re also very easy on the eyes!

When they exited the forest by the fate of the kami they ran straight into the area of my encampment. I have had a friendly wager that the forest did not consume them despite how long they had been missing despite the curse being stopped. I informed them it was not the 16th of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}), but in fact the 16th of Shiba in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Monkey {OOC: September})! They were stunned by a time jump as I was to see them stunned. I joined up moved into the wagon and we headed south once more.

During the travel weather appeared to be perfect so it only took a day to make it to the temple. I went inside to escort the woman known as Hana and explain why the group was leaving her in the monks’ care. An important distinction is that in their presence no ritual of Jade Strike or any fingers of jade hurt Hana or changed colors to black. Remarkably, no taint has befallen her! Donoha sama keeps saying he did not save her, because Isawa Tamaki san healed her wounds. However, his actions of removing her from the ritual area is likely what saved her from taint seeping in!

Oh, one needs to also mention that Akodo Asahi sama has been blessed by the neko sama from the hidden village in Mori Kuroi. The kawaii neko they named Kitagawa and despite every attempt to proven them wrong it understands low Rokugani! Surely the kami of cats has blessed this adorable kawaii neko! While it seems to like everyone in the group it follows Asahi sama everywhere it can.

On the 17th of Shiba in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Monkey {OOC: September}) the group departed to catch up to the Emperor’s Gft caravan which had set its sights on Kyuden Tonbo, Palace of the Dragonfly Clan! Also known as the gatekeepers of the path to the Dragon Clan. In order to try and catch up Donoha sama had an interesting plan when he asked Gunba san if they would like to visit the Shrine of the Ki-Rin! The Unicorn shugenja agreed and the Dragon courtier did some math and stated we could likely spend three days there if we left soon that morning.

I want to say the adventure was fraught with peril, but in a lovely change of pace this trek to catch up to the caravan may have been one of the nicest travels in my life. We saw a number of sight through the road through Mori Isawa on the way to Aojiroi Oku Shiro (Pale Oak Castle). Where Emperor Hantei the XVII is buried beneath the pale oak tree that is said to have bark which can be made into healing tea! It is also said to be the place where Donoha sama fell in love for the first time.

Once back in Mori Isawa, Otaku Gunba san noticed an old, weathered torii gate stands alone on a hilltop, its wood cracked and faded by time. One of the gate’s pillars had fallen, lying across the path it stood over leading away from the road. The remaining structure of the torii still stands tall. The area around the torii was barren of trees as though the clearing was the shrine, with only a few tufts of grass and scattered stones. The Unicorn crafted the following haiku:
Broken but unbowed
Immobile but a gateway
Sister, do you see?

At the western side of the forest another path, winding through the forest away from the road was spotted. Consisting of vibrant red maple trees. Within this autumnal season, the entire area was ablaze with the colors of the leaves, creating a tunnel of red, orange, and gold. The ground was carpeted with fallen leaves, and the crisp air carried the scent of earth and wood. The Phoenix crafted the following haiku:
Path of red and gold,
Whispers in the autumn breeze,
Peace found in each step.

Upon arriving at town surrounding Pale Oak castle Donoha visited briefly with Unmei san and acquired a single bokken for his cousin Asahi sama made of the same pale oak as his were. Biding Chiasa’s father a farewell they continued onward to the shrine. Upon leaving on the path that would be the final leg of the journey to the shrine he showed everyone a grove of cedar trees shown to him by Chiasa. Dense, the air within the grove was filled with the sound of rustling leaves, which he mentioned that some locals say are the whispers of ancient spirits. The trees were unusually tall and straight, with soft, moss-covered roots that seem to invite rest and reflection. A small stream ran through the grove, its clear water reflecting the sunlight in dappled patterns. The Dragon also mentioned local legend speaks of a group of shugenja who once meditated here, seeking wisdom from the kami. It was said that those who sit quietly within the grove may hear the advice of long-passed ancestors. He also crafted a haiku regarding this beautiful location:
Cedar giants stand,
Whispers of spirits in the air,
Moss invites to dream.

There are a total of three waterfalls that feed the waterway funneling into the lake south of the Shrine to the Ki-Rin. The shrine was located on a remote mountaintop in westernmost Phoenix lands, roughly a half-day’s travel from Shiro Gisu in the mountainous Asako provinces, with the Dragon Heart Plains unfurling due west. It boasted a massive torii arch, clearly visible above the surrounding lands. While there was no main road, the path was subtly marked at regular intervals by stone lanterns. Beyond the second peak was a plateau, where several housing living quarters and the shrine’s priest had a single room administrative office. The shrine consisted of a single statue, a marble Ki-Rin entwined with sculpted flames facing the Great Wall of the North Mountains. Its eyes are set with jade, and a thick shimenawa rope encircled its neck. Across the stone pedestal it was carved: “Look to the horizon, for the visions there are footsteps of the future.”

While it only took a day to reach it from Pale Oak Castle, along the path they took in the distance a solitary stone watchtower stands on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. Though the tower was empty, and upon investigation by the group. Found the stairs within have crumbled, the view from its base is still magnificent. The surrounding area was a peaceful meadow dotted with wildflowers and tall grasses swaying in the wind. The Lion crafted the following haiku:
Ancient stone sentinel,
Silent in the wildflower breeze,
Time’s whispers linger.

Once they arrived Donoha sama sought out a Monk tending to the shrine and was given an introduction to a senior member. The senior monk confirm that in three days a would be arriving with a few supplies on its return from Shiro Gisu up north. This river barge is how he crossed from Nanashi Mura to Ukabu Mura during his gempukku. Since it was on its returning trip then they would be able to use it to load the wagon and traverse all the way back to Toshi Ranbo wo Shien Shite Reigisaho on the northern edge of Lion Clan territory!

While the city is hotly debated between the Lion and the Crane it is currently a Crane held location since Rokugan’s year 1120. In the days leading up to the barge’s return Otaku Gunba san began to seek martial training and even he was surprised at the courtier being the one he knew the most about hand to hand combat. The Dragon nodded when he was asked to be his sensei and began to instruct him with a focus on improvised weaponry. During the river trip he practiced a technique called slow form, where both the teacher and the student never went above a quarter speed. It allowed for instruction to be given during motion.

When he wasn’t training Gunba san in the evening he was building a new saya for the jade katana in Asahi’s possession. Using wood collected in Mori Isawa he constructed it in three segments. Leaving the small rings of bark to separate three sections. He carved the haiku Asahi sama had created into the publc facing side of the saya to commemorate the event: Ancient stone sentinel, Silent in the wildflower breeze, Time’s whispers linger. On the side that faces Asahi’s leg he carved: Jade fangs, claws of green, A king of beasts, a creature rare, Power in his eyes.

Our arrival in Toshi Ranbo was brief, we hit the docks on the eastern side of the city and I paid for the extra help getting the oxen and wagon back onto dry land. While I can’t be one hundred percent sure I believe some of the helpers were from the ronin group known as the Iron Fans. Well, basing that on the iron tessen stuck in their obi and a complete lack of swords. All of us were forced to leave any, and all blades inside the wagon once we had docked. We were told we could retrieve them once we left the city and having the wagon bearing the Seppun mon on a small plaque above the door. Along with papers proving we were a part of the Emperor’s Gift, allowed us to avoid a bureaucratic nightmare. Peace in that city felt like a gilded cage.

The group arrives at Kyuden Tonbo on the 26th of Shiba in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Monkey {OOC: September}). Donoha sama appeared very excited to be back in lands he was familiar with. We first visited with an attendant of the Emerald Ambassadors. We were instructed to get baths, eat, rest and we would have dinner in the evening. Both Otaku Gunba san and Donoha sama visited the stables. The Unicorn checked in on animals left behind by owners that had succumbed to the plague. The Dragon reconnected with his great potoo bird, Shirogane and his horse, Yukiabo.

When the baths were set up it was in a line at our wagons with small dividers. The food was good but everything seemed a bit demure and less than the onset of the caravan’s opulence. Afterwards Donoha sama wrote a thank you letter to his Grandmother, Seppun Sora, asking about his eldest aunt and Grandfather. Then another letter to let his parents know of his arrival at Kyuden Tonbo. Asahi sama spent the time either training or shadowing his cousin when he trained Gunba san. Tamaki san wrote to the master that had trained him as a shugenja.

When evening fell they were brought to a dinner with Mirumoto Tanetsu sama and Shinjo Akiba sama. The Dragon and Unicorn Emerald Ambassadors. Shiba Sono sama had sent word to Tamaki san to meet with him tomorrow morning at dawn. Kitsu Tsuguri sama had left Asahi sama a note to report if anything felt worthy to pass on, otherwise they were to stay the course they had chosen. The Dragon and Unicorn Ambassadors explained how morale had dropped with the group’s disappearance. They also explained the plague had ravaged the caravan’s supplies and everything was being managed and allocated in a more strict manner. They talked about the time distortion effect of the woods in Mori Isawa. Once that was done the current problems had been shared regarding, supplies, morale, and awaiting word from the Dragonfly clan to allow them passage to Shiro Kitsuki.

The group made plans after leaving the dinner with Donoha sama letting the craft trades people know he was back and ready to help. They kept him for a few rounds of sake before allowing him to find sleep. The others were excited about seeing a teahouse Donoha has visited a few times and enjoyed for either a midday or evening meal. The Dragon was also awaiting a reply from his parents asking him to come home so he could easily bypass Kyuden Tonbo and show his friends the Dragon lands.

ARRIVAL AT SHIRO SHIBA

3rd of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}) – When the group made it back from the spirit world the jade pendants blew away like dust on the wind. It was then the 1st of Doji/Goat. They spent the morning loading everything and prepping the – at that time – unconscious Seia san, Isawa Kyoko san, Matsu Shànzi (yep, that’s me) sama, and the unknown Isawa shugenja they had rescued for transport. Any tents and were left behind unless they could help with transport. Shirogane showed the group where all the horses were not unlike a pack dog.

Seia san was secured to Bayushi Airi san’s horse. Isawa Kyoko san was secured to Hiruma Gombei san’s horse, Matsu Shànzi sama was secured to Donoha san’s horse, Yukiabo, and the unknown shugenja was secured to Akodo Asahi’s horse.

The man that had been going by the name of Doji Hoto took the majority of the luggage on his horse. It took two days going as fast as they could to arrive at the caravan outside Shiro Shiba. When they arrived at the caravan two Crane samurai were there and mentioned the Crane Emerald ambassador had urgent business with the man that was going by Doji Hoto. Only later, after Shiba Sono sama, the Phoenix Emerald ambassador took charge of the unconscious members we’d returned. That they learned the man they had known as Doji Hoto was an imposter!

The only things shared with the real Doji Hoto was the given name and a remarkably similar face. The ronin known as Hoto was from a disgraced Doji family forced to live as ronin. He was sentenced to serving aboard the Mantis ships to re-earn his honor. Since he had helped slay Oni, and lift the curse of Mori Kage Toshi. Donoha san hid his emotions well with a small smirk, but that lie gnawed at him and helped to shape some views he held onto later.

The group was introduced to Asako Eiko, whom served at the temple of the Eternal Flame for decades. She was to be the liaison between the group of whispered heroes and anything they need at Shiro Shiba. Set to retire after the caravan leaves this is her final act as one of the most trusted members of the community.

From her the samurai learned about the Whispering Grove hot springs. Tucked away in the verdant hills surrounding Shiro Shiba, a serene and mystical woodland shrouded in ancient mystery. It is said towering cedar trees stretch skyward, their branches forming a natural canopy that filters sunlight into dappled patterns upon the forest floor. Soft moss carpets the ground, muffling footsteps and lending the grove an air of tranquil solitude.

At the heart of the Whispering Grove stands the Spirit Pool, a crystal-clear pool fed by a natural spring that bubbles up from the earth below. It is said that the waters of the Spirit Pool possess magical properties, granting visions and insights to those who bathe or drink from its sacred depths.

The Spirit Pool is where nearly each member of the group wandered off to. Donoha san wanted to ask Airi san a question about an item they had yet to talk about. She accepted and headed straight to the Spirit Pool hot spring. Donoha san got a spare change of clothes to get into before going himself. All I got out of Donoha san though was the water was hot and his face would become flush as he mumbled about how correct Airi san is. I am still waiting to hear from Airi san her version of the conversation between her and Donoha san.

The Dragon spent the rest of the day reading of the Tao of Shinsei in the Hall of Eternal Wisdom. He learned of the location from Asako Eiko sama, she made sure he returned to a copy waiting in the room they had given him. In fact everyone returned to something they wanted to see or asked about. Though none more so than Bayushi Airi san, whom returned to Seia san kneeling just inside the door!

At dinner that night everyone learned that Isawa Kyoko san along with the unconscious shugenja. Whom we learned was Isawa Samamosuke san, and a small group of Shiba yojimbo. Were escorting the scroll that had been borrowed from Agasha Yuzuki back to her. Out of everyone this relieved Donoha san the most, his promise was being kept.

WHAT DOES NOT KILL YOU

26th of Akodo in 1123 (Month of the Horse) – Matsu Shànzi (yep, that’s me) As the hour of the Goat (2-4 PM) crested into its turn for the afternoon. The gloom of the location made it seem much later. The Lion, Crane, Scorpion, and Dragon fine themselves at the end of a rest from a battle. The plan was hastily made but it worked far better than expected. It is often cited that no plan survives contact with the enemy but this one pretty much followed the beats of a dance. Prisoner is rescued, most wounds are mended, and tea was had. They are awaiting the rise of their new Phoenix companion before moving out. Not sure when that will be it was decided Doji Hoto san would stay behind with the Phoenix shugenja while the rest of us press on ahead.

Upon entering a courtyard that had a stream running through it. The trio came upon an emergent combat scene. A tall samurai – almost six and a half Shaku – was beginning to engage with one of three Emarald Shades they have seen prior. The Lion ordered his Dragon cousin forward as the Scorpion and he readied their bows and began practical training for Airi san. They had studied kyujutsu when they were young but this yumi bow was a stark reminder of how long ago that was.

“I thought Eiji went home,” mumured Donoha san, “must be someone else. This one has wany more hair on their head and I don’t see any Nezumi.”

Leave it to the Kitsuki to see a battle and run up to the samurai within as though they had been long wartime companions. He was not quiet with his greeting to his new, and very large brother-in-arms. The world’s strangest Dragon samurai he is indeed. Arrows from Asahi san and Airi san began to chase down their forward companion. Raining injuries upon the shades, as Donoha nearly finished one off while the Crab was engaged wwith another. The shades made no noise so the battle had an eerie quiet to it, save for the shifting of feet, swings of weapons, and the twanging song of the two yumi.

This time it was Donoha san that got the assist from one of Asahi san’s arrows finishing off the shade but consuming the arrow in the process. Being freed up he spun around the Crab and killed the one hanging on by a thread and then came to rest at the last one. The Crab looked infuriated!

The Crab samurai crushed the last shade in a single blow!

Exchanging names the trio were now acquainted with Hiruma Gombei 蛭間 権兵衛, a bushi warrior of his clan. He too, bore the oft seen tetsubo the Crab are known for. Then Gombei san made a terrible mistake with this Dragon. He asked about his Crab gifted and inherited Oath-Hammer. Donoha went from mysterious to a person that had found someone that liked the same stuff they did!

Bayushi Airi san was treating Gombei san’s wounds from the blows the shades left. Never any blood just the feeling of frostbite when the inky blackness cuts you. Donoha san explained to Gombei san how his family came into possession of Chikai kodzuchi 誓い小槌 the Oath-hammer. An ancestor had defeated a Crab wielding a Kaiu blade. Rather than keeping it he took the time to learn of the family and returned it so the honor of his opponent could be nurtured in the next generation. In return they presented him with the hammer that made the blade. Its been in Donoha’s family for several generations and he was tasked with never letting it out of his sight.

Donoha san went on to explain he was developing his own version of the Dragon Niten style called O-Niten where the Wakizashi is replaced by either a kodzuchi (hammer) or masakari (one handed axe). From there he went on and explanation of the components of his sword, Mittsu Tamashī 三つ魂 the blade of Three Souls. Made from blades that had lost honor so they could restore reincarnated as Mittsu Tamashi. From the Phoenix there was Asako Katsumi & Shiba Tsukasa. Tsukasa had died protecting their assigned to a Phoenix Shugenja. Katsumi committed seppuku when he learned of the blade failing he had made. From fallen warriors on the Kaiu Kabe (Carpenter’s Wall) he had blades from Hida Shimazu, Hida Nagahide, Hiruma Kenji, Hida Moriyama, Kuni Asakura, and Yasuki Saigo. From the Lion he had the current reigning Ikoma Daimyo’s wakizashi and his Yojimbo’s katana. It is said the Daimyo still favors Donoha to this day. Considering he also gave him his name during their gempukku.

The dotsugi (copper joinery) saya (scabbard or sheath) prompted Gombei san to bring out a kintsugi (gold joinery) sake set that when its owner poured sake it NEVER RAN OUT! Wait till Doji Hoto san hears about that! Well not until the owner chooses to empty it. This was proof though that a item made from joinery could be awakened and have a spirit or spirits in them. Had his cousin not reminded them they were now wasting time since Airi san had finished the wound treatment, it would have been hard to stop him. From here Donoha san’s “Kitsuki Method of Ichi-Maru” tracked the path with info from Gombei san about a temple with activity in it and more shades. Once the group arrived they began to make a plan to deal with everyone before moving on to Shiro Mori Kage (Forest Shadow’s castle).

Within the temple in the center of Mori Kage Toshi was four groups of san (three) Emerald shades each and in the center was another Maho Shugenja and six more shades. The four man team of Akodo Asahi san, Kitsuki Donoha san, Bayushi Airi san, and our newest member Hiruma Gombei san, elected to pull one group at a time since the dead seem to be attracted to the team leader, Akodo Asahi san. Then it became 4 against three. If only the Phoenix shugenja which Doji Hoto was guarding would have woken up events may not have turned out as they did. It’s hard at times to understand the Kharmic Cycle’s needs and turning of events.

After speaking with Hiruma Gombei san and Bayushi Airi san I have more respect for Donoha san and his itoko (cousin), Asahi san. In the third engagement, they had to engage with Emerald shades within direct sight of the Maho shugenja and their six shades. Since the shades make no noise they used hand signals and fought a slow withdrawl to drag them to an area to dispose of them! That is nine Emerald shades at this point the group had subdued due to their desire for Asahi’s flesh. However this battle of attrition took a heavy toll on our brave warriors. Asahi san was laid unconscious during that engagement and were it not for the healing arts of Bayushi Airi san they would have likely died.

My readers may forget that when you are stabbed by an Emerald shade. It pierces through all your garments and leaves no mark other than stinging frostbite on your bodies! You die from being frozen to death! When Asahi san came about no one pointed fingers about whom did or did not do something. There was a collective sigh and discussion about working on finding better timing.

This did not deter our group from going after the fourth group of the Emerald shades. They re-entered the temple once again, made it pass the Maho shugenja and the six Emerald shades protecting him for some dark purpose. The droning of chants echoed throughout the temple as the Maho shugenja was absorbed in their ritual.

Donoha and Gombei seem to develop a competition at first as to whom could get more shades. It quickly turned into one would weaken the shade and other would finish it off! Donoha was putting out comparable damage to a Crab samurai and their tetsubo! More often than not Asahi would have to hold off six strikes while the others finished off the Emerald shades. Less we forget the rise of the Crimson Archer – Bayushi Airi san! Her prowess with Hoto san’s loaned yumi bow was growing through trial by fire!

In order to reach the final grouping of the outer shades they had to scale a few crumbling walls. Once they caught Asahi’s scent they tried to walk through the stone wall to no avail. However, they put what passed for a foot on the wall and began to walk up and over it! In the cramped quarter the final Emerald shade laid low an already injured Asahi! When Donoha came for vengeance he injured but was taken down as well! Bayushi san saw the first strike and thought that would finish him! He stood up only to be put back down by the second strike!

Hiruma Gombei crushed the last one and together with Bayushi Airi san they took in the scene. Gombei san remembered saying, “I was supposed to be the shield, they are true swordsmen.”

Airi san inspected the bodies and Asahi san was conscious but talking in whispers! Donoha was breathing when he shouldn’t be at all! While Gombei san handled the bodies, Airi san carried his katana – Mittsu Tamashi (Three Souls) and the Oath Hammer so it would not be out of its master’s sight.

To say Doji Hoto was at a loss of words when they returned would be an understatement. The Phoenix shugenja was still convalescent and not awake. Introductions were made an both Airi and Gombei sans removed the Lion and Dragon’s armor. Setting it to their sides in as much a honorable fashion as could be done. Mittsu Tamashi (Three Souls) and the Oath Hammer were laid in front of the Dragon’s armor. Hoto san made tea and everyone got updated.

At the end of hour of the Monkey (Shiba; 4-6 PM) later Asahi san was awake and everyone made sure he did not move. Airi san offered her lap to rest his head when medicine needed to be taken. This way he could not choke on it or drinking the tea. In the back half of the hour of the Rooster (Bayushi; 6-8 PM), brought the sound many people were waiting to hear.

“Where is my sword and hammer?”

Donoha san open his eyes and rolled his head in the opposite direction of Airi san’s voice when she said, “Over there with your armor.” The Scorpion repeated the same treatment for Donoha but kept exclaiming he should be dead. He mused at the thought of the Kami of good fortune still favoring him.

Double Thunder Strikes 

23rd of Akoko in 1123 (Month of the Horse) – Shànzi (yep, that’s me) left a note for Donoha that Doji Hoto had invited them for tea. He got dressed in the lighter version of his heavy armor. The kogake (foot armor), his plate suneate (shin guards), kikko gane obi (armored belt), agiote kote (connected armored sleaves), kikko gane (armored kimono), and tate-eri (shoulder protection). While under garments were different he was very fond of his new knee length, raw green silk haori (samurai and ashigaru jacket). The obi on the outside today was yellow raw silk with green shashiko to counter the haori’s golden shashiko.

I guess I should say his four items because the copper fan has become a mainstay of his wardrobe. He washed himself and wiped his face before dressing and coming out to join me. I fell in behind my lord as we walked over the wagon Donoha sama had lent or given Doji Hoto sama. You know, if he had given it to him that might explain all the wardrobe stuff going on. Both wagons were pulled by multiple oxen and could sleep four each with plenty of room for storage inside. Ramparts edged along the top if even more storage was required.

However, today I had two items of information, one personal and one professional I needed guidance on. When we entered Doji Hoto sama had forgotten about the tea invite. I was prepared and had brought it along to pour for us. As we sat I explained that I was worried I had insulted Shiba Ogawa san. He had been avoid making eye contact or even conversations.

Donoha put his hand over his mouth to hide his smile, poorly I might add. Fans don’t help, sama, if you don’t use them! He kept asking if I had not noticed and I could see Hoto sama perk up, as though he smelled gossip on the wind. Donoha sama made it clear he was not an expert among the ladies. Hoto sama tilted his head and made a face that bore only one conclusion – no lies detected. My lord went on to explain that even he could see how Shiba Ogawa was interested in me!

I was shocked, “You must be mistaken!”

Hoto sama raised an eyebrow, ready and fully awake, “It would appear breakfast is served.”

After that though Hoto sama was very kind and respectful of my feelings. It was decided I needed to decide how I feel and if I chose to pursue this he would arrange for us to have tea. It was his closing line that stuck with me. “Bushido has more to do with love than most samurai want to admit,” he said with all the grace the Crane are known for.

The topic then turned to the dead women found two nights ago. Among the Lion Clan a shugenja was missing by the name of Matsu Yoko. Donoha sama asked if I could take them to the wagon they were staying in and I affirmed I could. We finished our tea and the three of us headed off in that direction.

We passed by two guards that were 4th and 5th ranks in their schools! You could tell by the marking on their obi’s around the waist. I think one of them was Matsu Kanbei given the naginata at their side! Hoto sama seemed curious why such distinguished samurai were on guard duty. Donoha sama felt they were trying to show their juniors that all tasks are important and any order from above should be obeyed.

The three of us arrived at the collection of wagons Matsu Yoko san was said to reside. Akodo Maki san was present and she had a brief exchange with Donoha sama regarding the vase he had repaired for her at Benten’s shrine. Afterwards he explained they were coming to see about a missing lion that was found dead two nights ago. Maki san confirmed it was Matsu Yoko when Donoha sama had me show her the picture he painted of the victim.

Donoha sama turned to me and said, “Shànzi san, this is now an official investigation.” He turned back to Maki san and asked to be shown where Yoko san had slept and her belongings. She directed him to a chest and mentioned a group of the new Lion Shugenja, fresh from their gempukku had taken a room at the Red House. His demeanor and posture changed and the most Doji Hoto sama had added was his enjoyment watching Donoha work.

Pulling their traveling chest next to the wagon side so he could make use of a fold down shelf on the wagon. He removed and examined each item and stated what it was and described it. I documented all of it to turn into the Ambassadors. The two items that stuck out to him were two scrolls:

  • a letter from her grandfather,
  • a set of notes detailing research into Matsu Hitomi and the shrine.

Her grandfather was encouraging her to greet and talk with one Nichibotsu, whom he referred as the old, never dying monk. If an immortal was living here he imagined that would be a bigger deal than some random note on a letter with a bucket list of things to try out. The strokes of the letters on the letter were measured and even. One or two spots could display a shaky hand. This person was well practiced in their calligraphy despite their age.

When it came to notes about the shrine to Matsu Hitomi. Studying history was a passion of the young Shugenja. She mentions having relatives with the same interests and Nichibotsu comes up again. The letters mention they are still old and Donoha has two thoughts seeing the smooth and steady hand that wrote these notes.

  • Either Nichibotsu is a generational name or title passed down to the monk of Matsu Hitomi’s shrine.
  • The other is a celestial being of light or dark has been hiding in plain sight among the people of Toshi no Omoidoso.

He started thinking out loud as put the items back just as he had pulled them out. I was recording everything he said. He began drawing in the air to help him understand locations for a map only his mind could see.

“Leaving from the Shrine of Hitomi and on the way back to wagon but attack was still somewhere else and body placed in the beautification end cap of the block where Hoto sama and I found her.”
Just then his head snapped up, “We need to go to Hitomi’s shrine!”

Doji Hoto sama simply nodded, “I’ve seen that look before, lead on I shall follow.”

At the Shrine of Remembrance we had apparently missed the morning rush, there was an old man working on a bush, but Donoha sama went to pay their respects first. He took his time to honor the shrine and apologize for what he expected to happen very soon. Hoto sama did the proper ritual and time of meditation to pay honor to the shrine. Since I had gone yesterday I abstained this time. It was said that if you did not visit this shrine at least once a week, Hitomi’s curse would fall on you.

Donoha sama had gone over to the gardener and tried to ask for the one called Nichibotsu. He expected their might be more than one gardener and everyone used that name. Perhaps the old Matsu Sofu san (grandfather) was wrong about. Later he told me he wanted it to be any normal thing rather than what he was concerned it was. It could have been a yokai or spirit taking the shape of a monk and doing heavens knows what. He’s been on constant alert for supernatural threats ever since the Battle of the Emerald Shades.

The gardener replied that they were Nichibotsu. Internally, Donoha sama sighed and tried to ask further questions about being old when a associate’s grandfather had come to visit when they were young. He kept replying he’s just an old gardener. Donoha finally asked how long had he been alive, 100, 200 years? He smiled and told my lord he’d stop counting and he’s just an old gardener.

Without more evidence the Kitsuki samurai wondered what would the public perception of Mirumoto Tanetsu sama or their self be if he threatened an old gardener? Rather than risk his lord’s face he was about to pull back. Strategic retreats to lure the enemy into making a mistake worked in battles and criminal investigations.

“Why don’t we drop the pretense and speak plainly?”

Doji Hoto sama had entered the garden, a practiced courtier, he could see through the smile and knew the old man claiming to be Nichibotsu was bold face lying to Donoha sama. Donoha sama knew but realized his actions could affect others. Trying to learn by the lessons he had been getting from Hoto sama, it would seem the reverse is also true. Hoto sama’s hand was on his sword and the gardener hopped backward from merely standing still by ten shaku!

His form shifted to bit more muscle and hunched forward shoulders. Hoto sama glanced at Donoha sama and my lord was allowing him the first strike because he had figured out a way through the lie. Nichibotsu’s fingers cracked the nails off as claws grew and they leapt at Hoto sama! There was a flash of their Kakita blade and then I could not believe my eyes!

Making a cut on Nichibotsu’s face a black smoke with glowing red eyes escaped a now deflated flesh suit of the person that once was Nichibotsu! We all saw it fly down behind a group of bushes into the ground. I was sent to acquire two Eta while they guarded the evidence. When I returned Hoto sama demanded they watch the skin of the deceased but not touch it. I was sent to inform Mirumoto Tanetsu sama and get help. With that in place the two samurai descended through a hidden door among the bushes to the underground of Toshi no Omoidoso.

Armed with their normal accessories and Donoha sama retrieved the bag I had been carrying for him. They found themselves in a great underground cavern with walkways and various passages leading off. Among this macabre scene were a total of six ghosts. It took a few tries but Donoha figured out how to free the trapped spirits. When Hoto put his plan into motion and it worked they began helping the ghosts remember whom they were! This allowed them to return to the Celestial Order and the Great Cycle! Freed upon the first floor in this order:

  • Isawa Riho – female shugenja – saved by Doji Hoto sama
  • Moshi Yukiko – female shugenja – saved by Kitsuki Donoha sama
  • Isawa Kudo – female shugenja – saved by Doji Hoto sama
  • Shiba Hanjen – male bushi – saved by Kitsuki Donoha sama
  • Isawa Jun – female shugenja – saved by Kitsuki Donoha sama
  • Matsu Yoko – female shugenja – saved by Doji Hoto sama

Two of the ghosts had required Donoha sama to use a grabbling hook to reach but it was accomplished. The ghost of Matsu Yoko san warned that the further down they went the environment would become more hostile. The second subterranean floor looked as though it had been sculpted into a dark fortress with torches that bore flames only in the color of blood! Donoha sama said they should stick to the same approach. The ghosts here had weapons and would likely attack if met with aggression. The two decide to approach with the intent to heal and restore the lost souls.

Two souls were monks from the Asako family and would not leave without the other at the same time. It took some coordination between the two samurai but they freed them as well. The last ghost warned the Oni could be found on the layer below. The final saving order came out to the following:

  • Shiba Onita – male bushi – saved by Doji Hoto sama
  • Shiba Megumi – female bushi – saved by Kitsuki Donoha sama
  • Shiba Manabu – male bushi – saved by Doji Hoto sama
  • Asako Jado – male monk – saved by Doji Hoto sama
  • Asako Gedo – male monk – saved by Kitsuki Donoha sama
  • Shiba Kojima – male bushi – saved by Kitsuki Donoha sama

When the two samurai appeared out of the tunnel leading down to the third floor the ground felt soft. From the shadows pairs of red eyes would blink and stare. They came across a round dais with a column and a floating, glowing red crystal orb just above it. Donoha mentioned they may have to try this one together and they both laid their hand upon it and said for the souls into the orb to remember their names and honor. It flash bright red and then turned a golden color before becoming stone and dropping the column.

“AGAGGAAGRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! YOU SHOULD FLEE WHILE YOU CAN!!!!!”

The two samurai looked at each other and made nearly the same face, clearly they had decided to reject the Oni’s offer. Climbing up walls made of flesh with eye embedded in them they found a second orb but it was flickering. Donoha sama cocked his head, “This one might require us to infuse it with Void to bolster the souls to remember their way to Tengoku 天国 (Heaven).”

The Oni appeared on a higher ledge as they reached this second orb and tried to repeat the process. It failed and Doji Hoto sama growled, “Dammit Donoha san you’re right!”

Turning their backs on the Oni that had taken the form of a armored, demonic looking ox. Smoke and fire billowing from between the armored plates. They considered saving the soul more important than their safety. Each of them received a MIGHTY swipe from the Oni and were injured but they gave of their Void or souls and released the last of the trapped souls!

They turn to face the Oni and silver flashes as Doji Hoto sama manages to cut one of the arms off! It roars in pain standing up on its rear legs. Then Donoha sama jumps up to column on the dais to propel higher and brings his Mittsu no tamashī 三つの魂 (Three Souls) katana down through the head, body, and crotch finishing off what Hoto sama started.

Hoto sama smirked, “Still only counts as one.”

Donoha allowed a smile to be shared with his friend. Hoto sama used their amazing Calligraphy to make a list of the names of the deceased, thanks to Donoha’s amazing memory. When the scroll was finished they noticed the cavern floor has returned to stone though the formations of eyes still appeared in the rock. They began making their way back and out.

Before they realized whom was present they both called out, “It’s finished.” When Doji Hoto sama looked up to see all SEVEN of the Emerald Ambassadors standing around the skin of Nichibotsu, he began to pass out from exhaustion. Donoha sama caught him and pulled an arm over his shoulder to support him.

ARRIVAL AT TOSHI NO OMOIDOSO 

18th of Akoko in 1123 (Month of the Horse) – I have spent this week working out deals with various merchants to distribute the first volume of the Book: In Defense Of Honor. I asked Donoha to try that drawing style of his out as a picture for me. Next, I had another painter copy it and make it into a cover. I can’t wait to see how this does! All my time is spent quietly making copies and keeping up on the gossip about Donoha. I trade a story about him from our travels in exchange for informants watching my lord and reporting back. They’ve all been made aware about the book to be released in the Phoenix lands.

He laughed about this picture because he said this body would be a hard goal to obtain. Let me tell you ladies and gentleman! He’s to self critical as he is well on his way to being as structured as this picture. I have traveled with him on the road, seen him change kimonos, and cared for him in Shiro Akodo. He is in shape, everywhere it might matter, trust me. I don’t know how into pillowing he might be but we’ll save that for volume two.

Keeping track of Donoha this week was a simple task.

  • They met with the Ambassador Damiyo of the Dragon per the ambassador’s request to get a full run down of the encounter.
  • I know he was going to ask more about Kai leaving with the Agasha. Since the Kitsuki family was founded by Agasha Kitsuki, his ancestor. What “if any” does that bode for Donoha since he has distant family (at this point maybe 3rd, 4th, 5th cousins) among them.
  • Talk with the Dragon ambassador further about Doji Hoto’s offer to have Donoha work as their Yojimbo. Unlike a lot of Samurai on loan to the Emperor’s Gift. Mirumoto Tanestu is “actually” the first Lord that Donoha is in service to.
  • Finishing the ring for the Phoenix took up the lion’s share of this week.
  • Disassembling the lantern to use its components to craft Netsuke (toggle), Ojime (fastener), and Inro (suspended pouch, containers, or object from an Obi sash/belt) containers with elements of the brass and glass of the lantern. He called it a reincarnation of sorts for the lantern. This would become his gift to the Dragon
  • Giving his friend Isawa Genji the time and peace to settle in and speak with their clan’s ambassador.

I have had a wonderful time taking with Genji about mystical matters and the spirits. Their focus is not upon the temporal as much as it is on the spiritual. They are powerful in the void and it has marked them. When we reached Toshi no Omoidoso (City of Remembrance), the gates were bared and we have made camp outside in the rough shape of a horse’s iron shoe. It would be easy to surmise the issue is the change in power from the Shiba family to the incoming Agasha family. It’s possible it could indeed be something else.

Donoha has been practicing their fighting techniques on a boulder nearby the camp at night. He’s begun training with a wooden tessen he made from scrap wood, when I asked him why he said, “Come back at dinner, and I’ll show you.” When I returned he had made a very simple and delicate tessen from paper and bamboo. Then he has hold up a piece of washi paper. “Toss it in the air when you’re ready and step back.”

A second or maybe two after I let go he cut it in half with the paper edge of the fan! “With preparation even soft things can find a hard edge,” he replied and then lunged at me and locked my wrist with the fan. Twisting me into him so he could stop my fall! He then held the open fan, above us. I could see the tiny diamonds he had cut into the fan, so that when folded shut gave it teeth! Putting me upright he gave me the fan and went off to find dinner. I was left alone so suddenly, by Benten’s bountful blessing what a heart slayer.

Yet, this was an insight into how the investigation techniques of his worked. Everyone is capable of darkness or light given the right motivation. This fan with paper teeth and the wrist were examples of one way. His catching and showing me the night sky was the other.

THE EMPEROR’S GIFT ARRIVES AT KYUDEN MOSHI NO MACHI

8th of Akodo (Month of the Horse)
It was just after dawn when the caravan arrive the entrance to the Valley of the Centipede Clan. Donoha had been riding Yukiabo on the patrol that morning and had seen both Akodo Maki and Matsu Mayumi ride past him several times as they were apart of the roving patrols. Kai was also apart of the roving caravan patrols because of her skill with the horse.

The night had been passed with a little game between the three samurai. Mayumi had heard about he haiku Donoha had written for Maki. Donoha had to come up with new haiku by the time Maki or Mayumi would ride up on their rounds. Some of the ones Donoha came up with were the following.

The lion’s mane flows
Through the swirling night sky’s brushstrokes
A queen among stars

The mountain wind howls cold
The path is narrow and steep
One wrong step, death.

A female samurai
Stands at the edge of the dawn
A new day to fight

The snow-capped peaks loom
A treacherous path to the sky
Death awaits the fool

A great queen gazes down
On the swirling night sky’s dance
The stars her subjects

The sun’s first rays touch
The peaks, like a kiss of gold
A new day begins

They dance in her honor
Their steps light as the sunbeams
Their hearts pure as gold

A thousand legs creep
Across the rocks at break of day
A new world awakens

As dawn was starting to rise and day shift was changing out the three gathered. Mayumi apologized for doubting Donoha, and he just replied that he was grateful. When Maki and her shared an odd glance to each other he mentioned, “This was a delightful way to pass the time and a great mental exercise.” He bowed to each and rode back to his wagon to trade out and tie his horse up. Being around Maki or Mayumi was difficult for him because he continued to think of Chiasa when he talked with either of them. His dreams that morning were of tea ceremonies and the thoughts of having a kiss with someone he could love.

The outpost was the biggest illusion Donoha had witnessed in traveling to the outpost of the Centipede clan. It belied the beauty of Tani Senshio (Valley of the Centipede). The valley and the town that had grown up around Kyuden Moshi no Machi. Plus this was a port town to the ocean though you had to use the large cranes on the cliffside to get supplies from the boats. Multiple cranes could be used to haul a smaller boat out of the water! They arrived at the outpost in the morning hours but made it to Kyuden Moshi no Machi as the sun was setting and painting the world is a swath of color!

Eiji and Hoto were on the evening setup and patrol shift. Most of the setup part was finding spots to beak up the caravan train and get the wagons turned around so that when they were ready to leave it would be easy. The patrols would move from enclave to enclave of wagons leaving the Centipede, Mantis, and Ronin Otokodate (fellowships) samurai yojimbo to guard the rest.

Donoha got permission to have Shànzi take Mui to see the town before it got to dark. Donoha had been hatching a plan talking to the merchants while working on the sets of sword fittings. He learned the main branch of the Library of the Fiery Centipede might have a scroll that would teach Kai a flaming arrow spell! So after overcoming her concerns, which would have been valid any other time. As one must normally be invited to look a a repository of Shugenja knowledge from another school. The library had been made open to the samurai of the Emperor’s Gift!

Taking this rare chance they ascended the steps to the three story structure with no windows. As they walked a Crab clan Kuni Witchhunter noticed the hammer Donoha had in his obi and nodded his appreciation. Donoha returned the nod and they continued on their way. He saw the damiyo of Centipede clan and approached their seneschal asking about presenting a their gift. They were told each clan would be allowed a few members to do so tonight. He thanked them hoping he would get a chance for the Dragon and let them be.

Once inside the library they began pouring over scrolls and clearly were not alone as many Shugenja and other were here. Donoha left Kai at a table and went to find one of the librarians to help him. He managed to finally be meddlesome in a helpful way. The librarian took him to a corner of the library and found a scroll containing such a spell. He thanked her before she was absconded by the next person needing help.

When he returned to Kai to show her the treasure he had found, though he absolutely pointed out the librarian that had actually done the work. They jumped up and hugged him before remembering they were in public. They set to reading the scroll when Shànzi showed up with Mui. Donoha had gotten a quill and piece of washi paper and begun drawing the librarian as a way to say thanks more thoroughly.

While he was drawing Mui was eventually noticed staring at him big eyes! When he asked her what she was up to she held up a circular fan Shànzi had gotten her as they had wandered the town. She blew on it and it began to spin making the characters on it look like they were moving. She motioned for him to try and Donoha deliberately got it wrong. Mui shook her head and showed him again and Donoha deliberately failed telling his “sensei” that she so much to teach him.

She giggled but ran over to Shànzi, whom to Donoha’s surprised to see buried into research next to Kai and helping her understand parts of the scroll! This was working out better than expected. He went back to drawing the librarian in his specific style and it took him about two hours and then time to let it dry near a candle. Mui served an important purpose of getting both to open up to her and sharing things they may not have otherwise. Shànzi talked about being a specialist in ancestor spirits and ghosts of the dead.

Kai talked about how she became adopted into the Dragon clan. It was Donoha’s family that sent her to learn at the Agasha School for Fire Magic. In many ways Donoha was like an adoptive brother to her. When they turned to check on Donoha he was not at the table. They noticed him across the way going to the librarian he had pointed out earlier. The Centipede librarian was shocked at the picture and Donoha’s memory.

It was going to take the about a week of study to learn, and Shànzi offered to help Kai in hopes they could shorten the time needed. They went back to working on the scroll and Shànzi watched the librarian looking at Donoha as he left her with the picture and a sincere bow. He was the only one that made a legitimate show of thanks. She made it a point to tell the Lion Emerald Ambassador as soon as possible.

It was not longer after the scroll was copied and they had left the library. That a messenger informed Shànzi that both Otaku Kai and he were to be at the Centipede damiyo’s welcome banquet on behalf of the Dragon clan. The plan had worked and the damiyo was super pleased about someone choosing to honor the bushi that protected the Centipede. The tsuba and kozuka caught their eye but they noticed the care of each piece. The bushi Centipede thump their weapons to their chest in approval.

After the dinner four samurai remained and learned about some of the samurai missing on their gempukku in the mountains. Anyone watching Donoha (author’s note: Kai told me about this later) could see their demeanor and body posture change. Their was normally a calm about him, but after being told people could be kidnapped it turned predatory. He was ready to hunt something or someone. As everyone was leaving he told Mirumoto Tanetsu sama that he needed Shànzi and he was told he would have his retainer, Hida Eiji, and Doji Hoto. “Excellent, Mirumoto sama,” he bowed and backed up to the doorway before turning to leave with Kai.

Later that night Shànzi pulled Donoha discreetly aside and apologized for how they had acted around Kai. She was not a bad person and her lord was a good judge of character. Donoha smiled and brushed a bit of hair out of her face. “Some tales say the stars,” as he turned to look out and up, “are the windows of the celestial realm the Kami use to watch us. They will shine for you tonight because even kami have made mistakes, some not learning how to forgive, others nuzzling ill will that they don’t see has corrupted them. Each time we figure out something about ourselves we may inadvertently help one of them solve a problem they are having. That is why I believe the heavens and this world are connected. As our soul strives to enlighten itself, does the heart not also feel more for the mind to quantify and comprehend. You should be happy and proud of yourself to recognize growth. I know I am of you.”

Shànzi stood there and watched him move away to his wagon, with Hoto, Eiji, Gru’Vi as his companions. As a breeze picked up she could feel herself grow cold except where his hand had grazed her face to move her hair. Shànzi returned to her wagon with Kai and Mui. Donoha was troubled with dreams of tea ceremonies and trying to not think about Chiasa to much.

9th of Akoko (Month of the Horse) Before 12 hours of the day (META NOTE: that’s 24 Earth hours) had past from being given their assignment. The Emperor’s Gift proved their worth. Come let me tell a tale of pirates, gempukku, maidens, a duel, and the karma of poor life choices.

In order have Shànzi on his team Mirumoto Tanetsu sama had to give Otaku Kai to the Centipede bushi for the day so they could study Unicorn horsemanship with their scouts as they looked to the edges of the Valley of the Centipede. The other members of the Unicorn were not enough to scour the valley’s edges in case the maidens could be found there. Kai was hopeful this might lead to meeting a Unicorn clan member in the wild and figuring out if everyone still hated her. Even though he tried to spare her any unpleasant moments. The Unicorn Ambassador said they would be in separate areas, so it shouldn’t matter. It’s unclear what deal the Lion and Unicorn struck to arrange that.

Hida Eiji, Doji Hoto, Kitsuki Donoha, and Matsu Shànzi set out just after a quick morning meal from the hiemen assigned to care for our section of the wagons. Donoha asked one of the heimin that was good with animals to run through some exercises with Shirogane. He told him to stay behind this time because the last thing he wanted was for Shirogane to be hurt.

They were tasked with investigating the shrine that the gempukku was to take place at. When they arrived mid morning at Yama Sano Amaterasu. Everyone began to fan out except Shànzi, whom just watched Donoha to see if he could do it again or if it was a fluke. Donoha did not fail her, his eyes zoomed left and right as he stood in the courtyard.

She knew everything was about to kick off when he spoke, “Shànzi-san, I need the spare quill.”

Eiji stood watch for people while Doji Hoto looked interested at such a request. Donoha stalked over to point out sweeping marks done poorly, items put back with scuff marks, signs of a struggle and shody cover up. Then he moved over to a rug on floor of the main building at the shrine and it had a stain he was all to familiar with, blood.

While pointing out the what he’d been trained to look for as a magistrate, Donoha saw a scuff mark on the sliding door frame. He could see it wasn’t blood but Hoto looked perplexed when he got down to sniff at it. Then he stood and leaned out the door and pointed to the woods behind the shrine, “We need to go there for the next piece of information.”

He handed the quill back to Shànzi and the group made their way to a clearing. Once there, Donoha pointed to a mound of freshly turned dirt that was likely a grave for the shrine caretaker, Taiyo, a member of the Brotherhood of Shinsei. Everyone could see the logs used for seating and a stamped out fire pit. Donoha noticed some pits on the ground and held one up for Hoto to look at. The Crane confirmed that most fruit into the Emerald Empire did indeed come from the islands of the Mantis Clan.

Donoha queried Hoto, “There are members of the Mantis clan that help guard the Valley of the Centipede, are we going to accuse them of abducting the ladies on their Gempukku?”

“Donoha-san we would never “accuse” the Mantis of being raiders. No, these are merely pirates, posing as Mantis most assuredly,” was the reply by Hoto. However it was how he said it and was left out that actually conveyed more information, crucial information about how to proceed from the Crane’s time as son of the Emerald Champion.

With that in mind Donoha began to lead the group back down the trail to the town around Kyuden Moshi no Machi. He was looking for ways to circumvent the town and get the ladies to the docks. The arrival of kyūjūsan (93) wagons certainly complicated the search as most ways off the trail were now obscured before reaching the bottom. Donoha wished to go to the docks when Hoto asked him about his plan. He had remembered something a Mantis courtier had said during an imperial court to another attendee. Something about the Centipede Retirement, where the Mantis retiring from active service would come to the Centipede and acquire a wife.

“Donoha-san in what manner do you think they took the girls?”

“The docks are cliff based, so they would need sacks or boxes to have the dock workers unknowingly smuggle them over the edge in front of everyone.”

Eiji watched them talk as Shànzi tried to make notes.

“The Centipede retirement talks of taking brides of this clan by the Mantis, I feel going to the docks is correct but we should be looking for newlywed couples seeking passage.”

Donoha nodded as that was information he had not thought of, “Then if that’s right provided they haven’t left, then they may still be hiding in the town.” The group began to make haste to the cliffside docks.

Once at the cliffside docks, the group noticed the dock-master was a middle age woman. Given the matriarchal nature of the clan this was not surprising. They were barking orders at all the workers and making sure all the chaos was moving as a dance might. Doji Hoto mentioned that while important this position could be relegated to a skilled hiemin to perform, seeing this shugenja here seemed like a sort of punishment. Shànzi was told to hang back and record what they could, and listen to the area for changes in patterns as Hoto will approach the dock-master. Donoha turned to Eiji and began to engage him in a discussion about stance and grip techniques for the tetsubo.

Shànzi would later remark to Donoha watching Hoto have a conversation was like watching a dance frozen in ice! He even got the dock-master to reach out to the other shugenja of the Centipede. Using their combined connections to the Kami to cause a storm to roll in shutting down the port till tomorrow! They also gained a clue that perhaps one of two contributions to the investigation. Not to say either were small or of little import, both helped moved the investigation forward and were integral in solving it. The hitotsu (first) item leads to the futatsu (second) and a potentially large change in Donoha’s life.

Hitotsu, Doji Hoto, garnered the name of a sake house called: Akarui Umi (Bright Sea). Warned this was visited by the sailors and dock workers so it was a place a Crane would stand out, but a Crab not so much. It was these preconceived notions the Emperor’s gift was supposed to dispel. Oh and it did so dear reader just wait!

When the group got close Doji Hoto turned to Kitsuki Donoha and asked, “I have a plan, but you would be offended if I ask for you to be my Yojimbo?”

Donoha raised his eyebrows in thought for a few seconds and shook his head that no insult would be made. Then even in the heavy green lacquered and shakudō embellished armor he shook his shoulders, contorted his face and jaw, then rotated his head down, around and back up like someone stretching before exercise. When he looked up his gaze was intimidating and the scar certainly didn’t hurt over his left eye.

“How good is your kenjutsu Donoha-san?”

Almost an octave lower in tone came the reply “I doubt there is anyone in a 100 shaku of me that could win.”

Shànzi noted it was not lost on Doji Hoto that would include him, the nod and raised eyebrow, “Alright let’s go in.”

Donoha asked the Doji-sama to wait, turned to Shànzi, “Even though this may be temporary since you work for me as long as I work for Doji-sama you work for Doji-sama. Please stay close to Eiji if things get rough.” When Shànzi nodded their understanding the group slid open the door to the Akarui Umi sake house.

To say that we tried the survey the establishment would be a gross, miscarriage of justice. Hoto-sama walked him and pronounced we were looking for some pirates posing as Mantis sailors! Ones that had acquired new brides for their retirement illegally. Wow! I could not believe my eyes or ears. In many ways it was the most samurai thing to do, no deception, clearly stated intent, even Eiji nodded in approval at the straight forward approach. He continued with his actual lineage making clear he was the son of the Emerald Champion! Then he went on to say that his Yojimbo would duel everyone here until we got answers, everyone was dead, or he lost. To his credit my master never flinched at that statement and emotionlessly scanned the room using the Kitsuki Ichi-Maru technique.

A samurai in the back of the room stood up and people looked to him and began to quiet down. Hoto-sama and he spoke about information to be exchanged in another place than here if Donoha could beat him in a contest of wits. Donoha leaned into Hoto’s ear and said… something, as a Go board was placed on the table. Hoto nodded and agreed they would escort him out if Donoha-san won.

My master would never want me to sweeten a story about him so I will not. The two were evenly matched. Where Donoha excelled was focus of task. Hoto-sama began to enjoy the wager he had made which was 5-koku versus the information they sought. Eiji stood guard to make sure no one tried to run and warn anyone. It did not take long for the whole saki house to become engrossed in the game. Copper zeni coins trade hands as bets were made between the patrons.

The five koku bet got the saki ladies of the house to swarm Hoto-sama and keep his cup filled. I was tossed a sack to deal with payment. One was pretty enough I would have considered pillow time with her that night!

Back to focus being a discipline, the Mantis captain did not have such discipline with their focus. A little bit miffed seeing the girls that had been fawning over him now more interested in Hoto-sama. Donoha’s head and attention never wavered. He barely won the game and the margin was slim, both had avoided the Ko attack maneuver in their game the exact same way.

Captain Sekimoto-san stood and bowed to Donoha when he realized he lost. Donoha return the bow without speaking. More coins changed hands as out group escorted the Mantis samurai outside for a walk to talk about information in the midday sun. It looked to be the Hour of the Akodo (Horse / Noon-2PM), perhaps getting closer to the Hour of the Doji (Goat / 2PM-4PM).

Sekimoto-san went on to explain about the small draw back to the cliffside docks is when there are to many ships. Many sailors had to find other means because it was not unheard of to be delayed by a day, more if the weather faired poorly. They explained that south of the town that had sprung up around Kyuden Moshi no Machi were a number of small beaches with switch backs that allowed people to make the trek from the tiny southern beaches to town when such a thing happened.

They believed they knew of such a beach that could accommodate rogue Mantis clan with passengers. He asked how many girls we were talking about and Hoto-sama mentioned 5 women. Sekimoto nodded and suspected the crew was around 9-12 in size. Donoha looked at Eiji and they just nodded to each other that this would be no issue for them. Hoto-sama grinned and mentioned he had a plan to approach the group as smugglers posing as samurai.

Eiji nearly objected until he told him to get a barrel of shochu. He perked up and that and when he returned he said they were nice and gave him a keg tap to go with it! Donoha kept an eye on Sekimoto and even scared him so much with a glare the Mantis fell over. This had been a very different set of mannerisms Donoha was displaying. No one got within a rokuganto’s (sword’s) length of Doji Hoto while they waited to pursue. Shànzi had been sent to bring the horses they would need back from their caravan spot.

Once they mounted up and headed south along the trails it was definitely in the Hour of the Doji (Goat / 2PM-4PM). When they finally found the beach in question it had moved into the Hour of the Shiba (Monkey / 4PM-6PM) judging by the sun. The cliffside beaches were bathed in shade at this point that fires had begun to sprout up. The smoke trails of two such fires confirmed there were people down on this beach so the horses were tied off near the bottom of the switch back trail where some trees had managed to grow from the cliffside.

The four heroes gathered in a small glade and saw that the two fires did indeed have Mantis that had turned to piracy! With them were the itsutsu (five) shugenja missing from their gempukku. The maidens looked to be unharmed but huddle up as a group without a fire. Following the same plan as the Saki House it would seem. Doji Hoto-sama had his yojimbo, Donoha-san walk behind him and Eiji carried the Shochu barrel. Which now had the tap placed in it and some had been spilt on the ground. Eiji looked sad as a kitten over spilt cream. Sekimoto and Shànzi were told to stay next to Eiji in case something were to go wrong.

The leader of the pirates was named Sanada. One of his mouthy underlings went by the name Tatsu. An archer that had a bow not meant for riding a horse. Though they were commonly at sea and if rumors were true traded with outsiders from Rokugan. Many had the kama (sickle) that many of the Mantis were known for as much as the Crab were known for their Tetsubo usage. Sanada and Hoto tried to negotiate but Tatsu kept mentioning they had seen the girls, gesturing at their ill-gotten gains. This broke things down till Sanada challenged Doji Hoto-sama to a duel which he accepted!

Shànzi realized she should have seen the following coming, but she thought they were going to see a Crane samurai duel someone. Then he called for his Yojimbo and Donoha walked up. Careful to not say anything out loud, however, they felt like Sanada was about to receive karmic justice.

The duel is something Shànzi had seen Donoha do before, Donoha never missed practice a single day and always found a way to stay in top shape. Shànzi had to hide the fact that the two scars were kind of attractive on his sculpted, muscular, chest. Traveling alone on the road and checking on him while he was resting in Akodo Tozawa-sama’s home did afford her more knowledge of him than most.

Compelled to have a better view than last time where she had not seen Donoha duel previously. Shànzi moved around the large mound on the shoreline. Taking a position close to where the waves lapped the shore. It was clear the Centipede shugenja had kept their word about closing the port till tomorrow morning to aid the investigation. Storm clouds filled with the power and lightning the Kami Fourtune: Osano-Wo was known for. Perhaps they were watching this fight? Who can say.

Eiji and Sekimoto stayed at the rocky boulder outcropping. Eiji set the shochu barrel down and just grinned at any pirate thinking about trying to flee! Flexing their arm holding the tetsubo. Hoto stood to the side between the Centipede shugenja and the pirates. Sanada moved up to a spot on the beach and nodded his head as he took his stance. Donoha walked up with a look of contempt on his face you could taste with a glance.

When Donoha nodded Sanada shouted, “Shūchū (focus)!”
Donoha turn to face Hoto, still in stance but no longer looking at Sanada! This was known among Iaijutsu duelists as a right handed draw. All of Donoha’s right side was now facing Sanada!
Donoha replied calmly, “Shūchū (focus).”
Insulted and shock may be the best way Sanada look at this clearly younger man thinking they were better than him! Sanada shouted, “Shūchū (focus)!”
Donoha replied calmly for the second time, “Shūchū (focus).”
Sanada shouted, “Sutoraiku (strike)!”

It is important to look at the picture below and then come back to understand Donoha spoke to Doji Hoto-sama as he made his cut. Which ended before he was a third of the way through the sentence below.

“Did you know my sister studies at a Kakita School?”

Shànzi shrieked loudly when the head went flying! In the picture above Shànzi would have been obscured by the figure of Sanada and the spray of blood! The head landed half sunk in an incoming wave. Practice appears to have paid off as Sanada’s katana never left its saya. Donoha had to pick his up out of the ground behind where it had impaled the sand. Dusting off his saya and wiping the blade off after the “flick” to get any large drops of blood off.

As the headless body of Sanada fell sideways toward the sea, Donoha turned his gaze of contempt upon the seven remaining pirates. They all dropped to their knees and prostrated themselves on the ground! Doji Hoto-sama had moved over to talk with the Centipede shugenja. I learned later they had made a pact to burn the beach if they could not figure a way out and turn the sand into GLASS!

They were grateful in a reserved way and were happy to head home since their gempukku was over. Donoha never tried to interact with them, even on the way back. He was really leaning into the Yojimbo role, Shànzi wondered if he had ever tried acting? In order to see if there were any samurai left among them he went up to one that called himself Tatsu. When he told him to take the items and garments off Sanada’s body he refused and knelt awaiting a beheading or a weapon to commit seppuku. Donoha yelled that if he had to kill him he would go through everyone here and ask the same thing!

That anger curbed by dedication to bushido was frightening to watch but the lesson was deep. Tatsu lost their head that day but no one else moved to accept the option to die as samurai. Then he shouted at them the purpose, “The last samurai among you just DIED! They will be given a chance to figure it out in their next life. The rest of you knew I would make you touch a dead man as the Eta do and did nothing but grovel! None of you are samurai anymore!

Doji Hoto-sama offered the kobune (ship) of the pirates to Sekimoto-san. He mentioned if it survived the storm tonight, he would come and claim it. By the time our group made it back to Kyuden Moshi no Machi it was the Hour of the Bayushi (Rooster / 6PM-8PM). Our group made its way for the palace! Even without an invitation the Centipede Damiyo would want to know of the safe return of the five shugenja and the death of the monk, Taiyo, a Brother of Shinsei.

Hoto-sama had gathered some flowers on the way back and Donoha asked permission to duck off for a few seconds. I actually thought he was going to relieve himself but a few seconds later he was back with what he sought. A plant with white flower buds and the roots were wrapped in what was likely his last silk cloth. He had more back at the wagon that had been cleaned but he typically only carried two and the other had some blood on it.

Once the group entered Kyuden Moshi no Machi, Hida Eiji san and Shànzi san went with the six pirates purporting to be Mantis and made sure they made it to the magistrate. Sekimoto san went back to the Akarui Umi sake house in order to get up early and go check on the kobune that just became his in the morning with some of his crew. Hoto sama and Donoha accompanied the five shugenja back to the Damiyo’s palace and no one stopped them as they walked through the open, front-gate. There were several gasps as they passed.

When they arrived at the hall of Damiyo Moshi Jukio sama the group waited and asked an attendant to let the damiyo know we’ve returned. They quickly did so and after a few minutes the noise in the hall quieted down. Hoto sama had taken that time to move his daisho to the right invoking a gesture of piece. Donoha used the saego cord on his saya to peace bond Mittsu Tamashi (Three Souls).

The door slid open and Hoto and Donoha waited at the entrance as the five shugenja walked in and had a miniature audience with their Daimyo. They all bore the same family name of Moshi but Hikaru, Syuri, Inoue, Kondo, and Takako were home safe now. It was unclear to the samurai at the door what was said but they had not been given permission to enter here. A period of time passed that they spoke and soon arrayed themselves at various tables with others of the Centipede clan in the room.

Then the two of them were called into the room. Donoha stood behind the Doji samurai and to their right. Hoto spoke when addressed to and presented each of the five Centipede shugenja one of the flowers they picked up. Then he went over in brief detail, but did elaborate that Donoha was the one whom figured out the mystery of their disappearance. Jukio-sama turned their gaze to Donoha and ask if they had anything to add.

Donoha stunned the court with the most un-Dragon clan like response in the history of well, Rokugan!
“I prefer facts and evidence over anyone’s word. Well, we began early Hoto-sama,” he recovered fast but Hoto could tell Donoha felt pain accidentally saying Hoto’s given name. Deftly ‘sama’ was slapped on as fast as one could do.

“Eiji-san, Shànzi -san, and I headed to the Temple – Yama Sano Amaterasu. Upon arrival my companions spread out but I was reconstructing the fight that had taken place. Based on how everything was shoddily cleaned up. What is clear is the fight with someone from inside the temple, likely Brother Taiyo, whom died and was buried by the bandits or the ladies behind the shrine. What was not clear is if the fight occurred while they were there or before they arrived. My suspicions lean toward before they arrived and the pirate bandits buried him out of fear of the haunting by the dead. The blood stains were small but they could not clean everything. Its what led me to the grave in the back behind the shrine. A small glade that I suspect is used erstwhile for meditation. Finding the fruit pits on the ground,” which he produced one from under his armor, “the Doji was able to tell me about them and they come from the Mantis islands. I informed everyone we needed to head back to the docks before it was to late. On the way I learned from the Doji the practice of the Centipede retirement the Mantis practice. So instead of looking for smugglers we began looking for newlyweds. Through the Doji’s efforts the Centipede shugenja shut the port down for the day with a storm and where we might find a lead at the Akarui Umi. I won a Go game against a Mantis captain that came with us to aid the search, Sekimoto-san. The Mantis showed us one beach he thought might be large enough to hold the numbers we were talking about. It appears these hidden beaches to the south of here are used to get goods into town when the port and cranes get too busy. With everyone working together we found the right beach on the first try and Sekimoto-san stayed with us till we recovered the shugenja and returned here.”

He took a breath to the astonishment of the court.

“This plant with white blossoms is the only thing I could think of to bring to honor the loss of one life with the birth of another.”

As he held it out the Centipede Damiyo gestured for it to be brought to her. She cradled it and looked at Donoha, “You have said more than I have ever heard any other Dragon speak in my whole life.” It was not chastisement but astonishment.

“Hai, Moshi-sama,” was the only reply he gave as he bowed once more.

Then came the slap felt in the Mantis islands by anyone that had a Centipede bride, mother, or grandmother! Doji-Hoto offered one final piece of evidence taken from the leader of the pirates, Sanada. He presented the daisho wrapped in his silk Kimono and set them on the floor. Both tsuba (handguards) on each sword were clearly of the Mantis clan.

The two were told to have the others that joined them on this quest make use of the bathhouse and then return and join them for dinner. The way the Damiyo said made both Hoto and Donoha realize that they were aware of the Nezumi present in their wagons. Gru’Vi was not being invited to dinner. They bowed and it was not until the made it to the road a servant explained which building was the bathhouse, then left.

“I’m so sorry I said your given name, Hoto-san.”

Hoto looked around and no one was paying them any mind, “It’s okay Donoha-san lets get the others and get cleaned up.”

They rounded up Eiji san and Shànzi san. Heading back to get changed before going to the bathhouse. They informed Gru’Vi they were going to sneak extra food out for him so he could try the delicacies of the various parts of the empire. The group discussed where they would hide it and Eiji would bring it out during a trip to relieve himself.

Once that plan was put in place Eiji mentioned he was surprised how much Hoto was warming up the Nezumi. Hoto replied, “If words could have broken your bond then it was never there at all. Since the bond is there and we are a team then he is my problem to bear as well.” Hoto smiled and shared a mutual bow to the rat-like anthromorph of mutual respect.

Once back at dinner in everyone’s best kimono. Hoto began to mingle and Donoha was filling Shànzi in until Hoto moved into Mantis conversation. Donoha stopped and walked over and sat down. Even though it was below the table he did nothing to hide removing the Three Souls katana from his obi and setting down on his right side (making it harder to use) but the handle was facing the head of the Mantis clan in Kyuden Moshi no Machi, Yoritomo Okada.

That move of outright polite hostility in a Damiyo’s grand hall would carry serious repercussions. Were it not for the Mantis clan theme Daisho sitting in the middle of the room behind him. The fact “NO ONE” said anything to Donoha at that act, spoke volumes about Okada’s current standing in the Centipede court.

Hoto and he began to verbally spar and it was clear Okada was practiced but Hoto won the engagement. During each toast the only thing Donoha would say is, “HAI!” Gossiping later anyone that could see his face said his green hazel eyes could write scrolls and never need a quill. His hand never strayed near his katana but everyone knew if Hoto said the word their could be blood in the hall. Shànzi absolutely let their knowledge of the duel slip into conversations asking about the rescue.

At a certain point Hoto left with Okada to talk in the garden. Once they departed Donoha san puts his katana back on his right side and does not join them but waits nearby. Eiji san heads back for the night while Shànzi san takes the time to spread the prowess of her master to the wives with to much time on their hands.

10th of Akoko (Month of the Horse) – During the day Donoha focused on the Phoenix gift of a ring with a red stone to evoke the essence of the firebird of legend. Hoto and he were brought into a private meeting between the Centipede damiyo and Yoritomo Okada. They would not share with me the contents but it was declared that the Mantis daisho would wait for Yoritomo’s family head to show up and remove them!

That evening the ceremony of the gempukku’s completion is held and a banquet to honor the heroes that helped to save them. Okada looked relived to see Sekimoto at that table in order to show Mantis can clean their own house. The shugenja put on a show of fire and Donoha scrawled a picture I can add here of Moshi Takako making a fiery wheel in the air behind them!

The heroes were gifted with copper fans bearing the Mon of the Centipede. Apparently, they got the copper from the Dragon clan which evoked the smallest grin from Donoha. He mentioned his family governed a copper mine in the Dragon clan’s lands near Great Water Fall castle. Perhaps it is the only copper mine in use? The White sprig for the Monk is presented as Shànzi in her role as an Ikoma Bard display her grief of mourning openly for the Shugenja and the Damiyo while everyone else remains as stoic as ever.

THE ROAD TO OTOSAN UCHI

Kitsuki Donoha left Kyuden Ikoma on the 15th of Hantei or the Month of the Serpent. He’d begun practicing the duel wielding kenjutsu style with the Smith Hammer while he was staying among the Lion clan but it had proven difficult to master an unusual style. Still his clan was known for wielding two swords at once and he had to balance that with never letting the hammer get away from him. Now that Mittsu Tamashi was done he would have to try working on the technique again. Since he was told to never let the hammer out of his possession it occupies the spot his Wakizashi normally would. The shorter blade in his Daisho now rests on his back side within the obi sash. Shirogane’s training has gone well as it is perched on his right shoulder as though it was another limb.

While still very cold in the morning it felt like summer to the child of the Dragon clan. Spring began to whittle away the winter of the savannah plains in the Lion clan’s territory. The farther he travel the less traffic he would see. Carrying little in the way of supplies when it would come to food because he would stop merchant caravans to ask for food. Unlike some samurai he never asked for more than he needed and always thanked them for trying to offer more than asked. For long stretches of the first day he was alone moving through a sea of golden grass as most of the color was still gone from winter. The road had the look of great magic as it could part this golden sea.

As the day progress he had finished a haiku of the day.
Savannah, endless green
Where the wind whispers through the trees
Life abounds in peace

Donoha smiled to himself, knowing he had written the poem for the wrong season by using the word “green.” In the late spring and summer the haiku’s recital would find its place. However, in the way plants grow into bloom so to would this picture. Less frost was an artistic choice. He slept in the headman’s house in their front room of a village he passed by at nightfall. By candle light with a bowl water and a cloth from his iron box he added diluted ink tones for shading to the picture to give it the depth of life.

On the 16th of Hantei (Month of the Serpent) before the sun had completely reached its zenith in the hour of Hantei (Serpent). Donoha heard a commotion ahead. In no way trying to disguise his approach he came upon three ronin bully a young woman wearing the mon (crest) of the Lion clan on her rather well made leather backpack. When he was closer and could intervene from horse back the three turned to Donoha. Shirogane sitting on his right shoulder.

“This is none of your business, we all gotta eat,” the lady’s bag had been toss on the ground by one of the ronin looking for coin. One of the men was still casting a side eye at the bag. While the other two had the full attention affixed to Donoha.

Ignoring the three ronin he looked down to the lady, “Lion-san, do you require any assistance?”

The Lion courtier was clearly of the samurai class, verified when she spoke, “Yes, but if we can avoid any violence p, please.” Their gempukku as a Lion had to involve testing one’s self but were they faced with an unfair situation to overcome? Donoha wondered because here was the wide opened world and no one was around to tell it to stop, the difficulty was to high.

Donoha confirmed that she would like help but preferred a non-violent outcome. When she gave that confirmation with a nod he turned to the three men, “Since the Lion would prefer an outcome that does not involve the three of you dying today. Let me know what caused you to accost this lady?”

Their stories were of times are hard for wave-men with no one to call a master. They need to eat as well. Donoha mentioned the town he left this morning as a place to work out an arrangement to get food. Or they could become his retainers! This made everyone pause, but Donoha had heard the mandate of Hantei the XXXVIII about ronin needing to fine work with lords. Refusal to accept offers were punishable by death.

One of the three blurted out, “You look a little young to be granting the title of samurai to ronin, boy!”

Donoha nodded and without uttering a word he got off his horse and led it to the side of the road. Shirogane flew up and around landing on the pack tied to Yukiabo’s rump. Turning to the lady Lion briefly to mention they should gather their belongings and join his horse. At which point he turned away from her confident they understood his statement was not a request.

He then removed two pale-oak bokken (wooden swords; pale-oak only comes from one province in all of Rokugan. Aoijiro Province in the Phoenix lands. From the single and largest oak in the province that grows over the site where Emperor Hantei XVII was buried! Its bark is believed to have miraculous curative properties.) from his white dosanko horse’s saddle. Next, with his other hand drew his sword slowly and held above his head so they could get a good look at its unique blade.

“If you doubt my prowess or skill you have two choices. One, face me as a retainer in training and I’ll use these bokken. Two, face me as a person refusing the order of Emperor Hantei the Thirty-eight of his line for ronin to find masters to serve. In which case I will use the above blade and my hammer. Regardless of your choice the lady Lion is leaving here with me.”

The leader stepped forward putting his hand on the shoulder of the one that spoke out, “We would need a few days to put our affairs in order. Where is your destination and we could meet you there? By then we can also decide whether or not to serve you.”

Donoha put his sword back as slowly as he took it out. By acknowledging the lady Lion’s request he should find every avenue to pursue a peaceful resolution. Tucking the pale-oak bokken up under and arm should he still need them in a minute. He gave a curt but purposeful bow of just his head, “Shiro Akodo, and then on to Otosan-Uchi. I have been asked to travel with the Emperor’s Gift.”

The “Emperor’s Gift” is an open caravan of various forms of aid & entertainment, with their passage also given permission to use the Emperor’s Roads. They will be visiting each clan in reverse compass order as follows: Phoenix, Dragon, Unicorn, Scorpion, Crab, Lion, Crane. To be asked to join such a endeavor is a great honor. His offer had even more merit when Donoha produced a letter from under his light tatami (tatami = foldable) armor showing the seal of the Voice of the Emperor. Even the lady Lion had raised eyebrows, but Donoha knew this was the work of his Grandfather and Grandmother securing documentation and leaving it with his father to pass to him.

The ronin leader of the three wave-men said, “It should take you another three days to reach Shiro Akodo. We’ll meet you either just before the gates. Or barring bad timing will wait on the road that will lead to Otosan-Uchi. Is this acceptable?”

Donoha nodded and put the bokken back and mounted his horse. He offered a hand to the lady Lion and pulled her up into the saddle in front of him. He rode on with the same slow but purposeful gait he had been on the entire time. Shriogane returned to his right shoulder and just turned its head to watch the ronin as they left. It was not until the change between the hours of the Akodo (or Horse / 12pm – 2pm) and Doji (or Goat / 2pm-4pm) that he finally spoke to her.

Matsu Shànzi was their name and they too, were headed to Otosan-Uchi for the Emperor’s Gift. She had felt bad for the ronin but did not have any coin to spare. She lamented that while a Lion samurai she did not have a master to call her own and Donoha replied she should become his retainer. She was clearly and artisan that pursue at least calligraphy from what he had seen strewn on the ground. She accepted and formal introductions were made.

Shànzi loved to talk and they spoke about each others gempukku’s taken. She began writing down what she learned of Donoha when they stopped for the night at another village. Donoha often wondered if the Lion had such villages made as a way to not only reap the rewards of the land. Secondly, to provide the samurai and imperial messengers waypoints between larger settlements.

The Dragon lands were very mountainous and cities often made terraced going up the sides from valleys. It was cold in summer but in winter it was like a maze that was covered in snow! There reasons court times happened during winter when people often could not leave their homes. This was almost summer weather from back home near Great Fall Castle.

The 17th and 18th of Hantei (Month of the Serpent) had a routine that awoke Shànzi. The sounds of Donoha using one of his pale-oak bokken and his smithing hammer to create and unusual style based upon the two weapons the Mirumoto duelists of the Dragon clan are known for. Watching him move between slow-play and burst-action poses reminds of a quiet kabuki theater fight.

They traveled across the Lion clan lands with the two sitting back to back on Yukiabo. His steady, even, pace allowed Shànzi the opportunity to work on her notes with her pack on top of Donoha’s as a makeshift desk of sorts. With countless scraps of washi (plant-based paper) she would jot down things he would talk about and to her amazement there was nothing he would not answer. Since he had traveled much more than her she focused on the sword called “Three Souls” or Mittsu Tamashi. The story of its creation and Donoha’s gempukku was astounding to her.

Especially the part about Kenson Gakka or “Humility’s Lesson” and saving the daughter of the Ikoma family’s daimyo! When asked he showed her the scar from where the Scorpion’s katana had gone through his shoulder. Then he flexed his left shoulder to make it pop and showed a rare smile. He mentioned it was his first real fight but he learned so much from it words fail to explain its wisdom. He reminded her of his motto on Mittsu Tamashi that “Pain is traded for Wisdom.”

When they stopped to eat each day after a caravan had been stopped to ask for some fruit and slices of meat. Again with them offering more and Donoha refusing because his stomach was so small he could only take a little. Shànzi realized he only took what they would need and never more. When she asked him about it he said it was a way to practice Bushido. Jin was the act of compassion to not abuse the authority bestowed to them by the fortune of their birth and the grace of the Emperor. Rei is the act of courtesy to respect the efforts of the hiemen and eta in their roles within the Celestial Order. Makoto is the notion of being sincere and making sure what was asked is all that is taken despite being offered more. Therefore his words are his bond and his truth. Then there is Gi where one must be honest in all things.

As the Lady Sun begins to exchange rule of the sky with Lord Moon on the 18th of Hantei (Month of the Serpent), they arrived at a Temple to Benten, Fortune of Romantic Love. Donoha stops the horse when he hears a piece of pottery hit a stone floor! Followed very quickly by the crying of a woman!

Shànzi follows him as he approaches two Ashigaru Spearmen in colors of the Lion clan. Donoha enquires about their charge and he told it is the lady Akodo Maki they serve. He requests permission to approach and offer assistance regarding the sound of something breaking. They part for him to approach.

The maiden of the Lion clan and a samurai-ko, Akodo Maki, is kneeling at the temple, a simple roadside establishment adorned by Lion arches and a covered altar. It could be more accurate to say it was a gazebo than full building. A broken vase lies next to her at the temple altar, and she is holding a couple of the pieces as her tears and cries fall without regard to the world.

“Akodo-sama, my name is Kitsuki Donoha, and I have been trained in the art of restoring broken items. I happen to have my supplies with me and would be honored to render aid unto you, if you wish it.” Donoha chose to not acknowledge her tears for concern it would only cause her to feel further loss. He also made it her choice because its possible she wished to break the vase.

She pulled a folded cloth and in a clearly practiced move she had cleared her face of tears by the time she spun to meet his gaze, “I do wish it, please Kitsuki-san, if you can fix this I would be in your debt.”

Donoha bowed and got to work with the Ashigaru Spearmen to create a makeshift table he could set up braziers from the shrine around for light. Retrieving his iron box he pulled out adhesives and powdered copper dust. Matsu Shànzi sat with Maki san and records her tale about her love, Akodo Funaki, has been pledged to marry a Unicorn clan samurai-ko, in an effort to create peace between clans and families. He will be taking her family name – Otaku. She was paying tribute here to honor her love. She had long thought ssince Maki was owed a favor by their Daimyo. In addition to each of them being the youngest among their respective siblings they would be able to marry.

However, she has given up hope, and simply wants happiness for herself and Akodo Funaki. The Unicorn battle maiden or samurai-ko is Otaku Ito. Matsu Shànzi shared how the Unicorn destroyed a village of the Lion and that’s how she lost her home and nearly became a ronin were it not for Donoha. Both women had heard rumors that Otaku Ito is mean, spiteful, and not particularly fair person.

For several hours into the night Donoha worked on understanding “how” it went back together and using washi paper he sketched how to repair and beautify the vase. It would take three of his twelve rations of copper powder, but he gave up a fourth ration to make it into a tree of copper mending the vase and put his mon (crest) on the base to sign his work. His heart bled for Maki quietly having lost contact with his love but he would say nothing as he did not want to make this about himself. He would pour his heart into helping another mend hers. He could think of no better prayer to the divine Benten. He finished in the hour of the Hida (or Boar / 10pm – Midnight).

He apologized as he handed her the vase saying he used a reagent to make everything cure to a solid state quicker. But it would likely be done and the smell will vanish by morning. Maki could feel the warmth as copper laden adhesive was working and realizing as it cooled it was also pulling excess copper into the cracks! By the brazier light both Maki and Shànzi could see the copper tree holding the pieces together! Shànzi pointed out his mon on the bottom.

He gave Maki a small scroll with this haiku and reminded her to live and learn to love again. He was really tyring to reassure himself. Maki swore if he ever needed aid the Akodo would be there to help. He was honored to help a member of the Akodo he reminded me later because one of his cousins is an Akodo. He bowed deeply in return and as she went back to prayer. The Ashigaru Spearmen helped him pack everything back up and the two travelers left in silence.

It was unspoken but neither could sleep after such an emotional event. They rode onward to Shiro Akodo arriving about an hour before dawn. There was no sign of the ronin and what was more is the gates were shut! Shànzi confirmed that was unusual even for night time given no active wars were happening within at least several days ride. As they rode up on Yukiabo’s back. Donoha notice the tension level of the guards were high thanks to his training in Ichi-Maru (First Glance).

As calmly as he had ridden up to the Ronin, he approached the gate of Shiro Akodo. “Battle does not wait for the rested soul,” he thought to himself. Adrenaline poured through his limbs like hot oil quenching a blade. Sleep would be delayed a little longer. When the guard told him to halt he did so. Seeing the gate samurai performing their Chugo or duty demanded nothing less than Rei or courtesy in return.

When queried by Donoha, the samurai of the gate said their had been a murder and Shiro Akodo was on lock down. He thanked him for the information, “Please tell your daimyo my name is Kitsuki Donoha of the Dragon Clan. We are known for being investigators, and I would be honored if your lord allowed me to assist in bringing the murderer to justice.” At which point he bowed.

One of the other samurai in the back with the Ashigaru soldiers stepped forward and whispered something into the other’s ear. The first Lion samurai asked him to wait as the other would bring Donoha sama’s offer to their daimyo. Both Shànzi and he dismounted and waited by Yukiabo as Shriogane settled back down on Donoha’s shoulder after his dismount. It was now the Hour of the Sun (Hare / 6am – 8am) when the guard returned and the Kitsuki was asked to help their lord.

As they were allowed inside with the gate being opened only as wide as to let them in and then shut once more. With his Ichi-Maru (First Glance) scanning the city for signs about what is out of place. He introduces Matsu Shànzi as his note taker, and to her credit Shànzi quickly gathered what she would need to perform this role from her pack on Yukiabo. The horse was handed to a guard to be stabled and cared for by the daimyo’s order. He never acknowledged Shirogane, as the great potoo bird (from claw to head was just under two “shaku” or feet) sat stoically on his right shoulder.

Into the district of the castle city went Donoha noticing how empty it was and what it should look like based on buildings, carts, and other signs. The hiemen would be in their homes likely above or in the back of their businesses. The eta would be in the villages outside the city walls, aside from those kept to perform tasks like moving the dead. When they arrived at the district damiyo’s estate they were led inside. Shànzi and Donoha removed their sandals and Donoha tied his to the side of his obi (belt). Shànzi left her’s at the entrance likely thinking Donoha strange for skirting the common custom. He did a good job scrapping them before attaching them but this was the first thing he did that was very strange.

Shirogane would adjust on his shoulder but was careful with placement of its claws. They were brought to second floor where an extra guard was outside the room the gate samurai had been leading them to. Both guards nodded to each other and Donoha noted this had likely been worked out in the last visit. The guard spoke to someone just beyond the wooden and paper door, “Jōkamachi-sama (castle town lord) I have brought the Kitsuki-san.”

“Yes, bring them in,” was the reply and the voice almost sounded like the growl of a lion.

The door was slid open by its guard and they stood to the side. The gate guard motioned and then left to return to their post. This room was as sparse as those in the most dragon castles. A futon lay tossed aside, there was a small pool of blood maybe one and a half koku wide in front of an armor stand displaying a grand o-yoroi (armor) bearing the Matsu mon as its maedate (crest on the helmet). It clearly belonged to a great member of that family. The room was otherwise empty save for the man that had spoken earlier slightly shorter than Donoha. However, his presence was a beast waiting and watching, the district Jōkamachi daimyo, Akodo Tozawa.

After introductions were made, Donoha requested to be allowed to begin. Tozawa nodded and made a gesture with their iron tessen (war fan) that the room was his. He walked still dressed in his tatami light armor from the road. He squated down close to the blood asking Shànzi for a spare quill from her yatate (portatble ink-cotton writing kit), to which she provided. When he got within a few inches of the blood he noticed an indentation in tatami floor mat. It was definitely not enough blood if a head was bashed in or throat cut. Also why preserve the scene if you were going to move the body?

“Kitsuki-san, we can call an eta if you need to check the blood,” Tozawa offered with a raised eyebrow at Donoha clearly sniffing the air around the stain on the floor.

Using the feather of the quill to help push the scent of the blood into his nose, “No need Akodo-sama, after all this isn’t a murder is it? This person was taken from here. This happened no longer than last night but over a few hours ago.” Speaking to a daimyo without eye-contact was considered rude enough but then Donoha had begun to stand and while looking at the o-yoroi their head whipped to the other side of the room and rather than facing the Daimyo they walked over to an exterior wall. Then they slid two fingers from each hand through notches made in the wall panel and pulled it completely free from the supports with EASE!

Setting it to the side he turned to the district daimyo, “Akodo-sama, I believe this Matsu Mayumi is not dead but kidnapped. You called it a murder so they would trip up and make a mistake not being able to ask for ransom.” Donoha then pointed out the blood stains on the column by the panel that nearly blended into the lacquer of the wood. Tozawa had both eyebrows raised as they stalked over, “Your ways are strange Kitsuki-san but clearly have merit.”

Donoha slipped on his sandals, handing the quill back, and swung out on one arm and saying, “High watch, Shirogane.” The great bird flew to the roof and perched in the morning sun. Donoha saw where a rope had been once attached to the wooden second floor wall. Pulling some strands from the wall he showed it to Tozawa whom spurted out “Eta” with disdain. Donoha was quick to point out they typically don’t have this skill. But if he was going to pull this off he would want to make it seem like the Eta were to blame.

“Well, it would appear we need to go this way,” then let go of the wall and leapt down to the ground below!

The landing was a little rougher than he would like and his kimono was damaged near the knee with a tear. However, he found some orange clumps of clay that did not match the ground and he took some and brought it out to the walkway that surrounded the estate. Both Tozawa and Shànzi were missing and presumably taking the stairs to come around and meet him.

When Tozawa sama and Shànzi san arrived he had six ashigaru spearmen with him. Donoha san showed him the orange clay and the Jōkamachi-sama growled. According to him this was indeed mud used for some pottery in the castle. The Jōkamachi-sama asked if any of his ashigaru knew which town this was from and one gave the affirmative. He was assigned to help us. Donoha san had Shànzi san document his name for the investigation – Minoru.

They headed off as a group and Donoha san mentioned keeping the guard of Matsu Mayumi san’s room under watch in case they were an accomplice. Tozawa sama nodded mentioning they were being treated for their injures currently. He’d acknowledged his caution and act on it when he got back. They came to a side gate of the district that would also lead them outside of Shiro Akodo.

Donoha’s Ichi-Maru detected a problem with the gate’s hinge. When they queried the guards it had been broken off yesterday and been repaired. Donoha nodded, “Matsu-san get their names so I can tell their lord they were helpful. Now if one of you can open the gate so Ashigaru-san here may lead us to our destination.” Shànzi did as she was instructed and recorded: Akodo Kashin and Akodo Kanemoto. She proceed on following behind the two as soon as she had stored her quill on her yatate (portatble ink-cotton writing kit).

The real reason he wanted their name was he considered them possible accomplices. He’d use the Kitsuki brand of investigation or Nazado to determine if Lion’s were at fault. One thing he knew for certain is he did not want to play Go with Tozawa.

When they got to the Eta town outside Shiro Akodo’s jōkamachi (castle town). Donoha san had the group stop, they – meaning other than him – would approach quietly. Shànzi san was to hang back and record and seek reinforcements should the need arise. Minoru san’s job was to locate Matsu Mayumi san and either get her out or protect her until help could come. Donoha san would deal with whatever the threat was they would face. It was not lost on him that this was the same setup as the Second Battle of Kenson Gakka only he was the one tackling a crowd so someone else might secure the target’s safety.

Now was not the time for worry or doubt. Now was time for Yu (courage), Chugo (duty), and Meyo (honor). Donoha walked into the village ring of huts and saw the same three ronin from his first encounter with Shànzi. Stopping about 20 shaku (each shaku is roughly one foot) from the trio he addressed them as he drew his katana and hammer, “Well, it would seem you’ve made up your minds.”

There leader, again in the back chuckled as he replied, “Lady Shosuru said you would find us but it was quicker than I thought it would be. Her offer had more coin behind it rather than the promise of redemption.”

Sighing that it had come to this the young Dragon retorted, “Fine, then who wishes to die first?”

The leader tried to go on about numbers and intimidation and Donoha san ignored them completely turned around and told Shànzi san to make sure she got all of this. With a shout of the affirmative from the young Lion he turned back to the now enraged ronin as their leader shouted for the two subordinates to charge Donoha! Using the hammer like a tonfa he would use the strong steel head to parry anything while he swung Mittsu Tamashi at the one telegraphing his movements.

Their head went sailing through the air akin to a tossed sack of rice!

His counterpart struck Donoha in the right side but the tatami light armor kept the blow from being fatal. Donoha’s return swing missed it’s mark of their neck but so did his second opponent swing wide trying to avoid the black river of death that was Mittsu Tamashi’s black edge, the copper hamon line flashing in the night! Then the assailant noticed to late that Donoha had made each strike with counters should he miss. Mittsu Tamashi went right through his chest and out the back! The ronin’s final view of the world was being tossed off the blade as Donoha simply rotated the blade. Then with a flick simply cut his way out of the dead man’s chest.

Matsu Shànzi san was stunned at how fast and brutal his attacks had been! She had never seen him fight before and now understood why he had sounded a little full of himself when they met. He had allowed them to leave alive, not the other way around. She pitied the Eta villagers that were all bowed in prostration outside their homes. Minoru san waved to Shànzi san that they had made it to Matsu Mayumi! It felt like time had slowed down but the grains in the hour glass were surely falling regardless of their perception.

“The nerve, the audacity!” Shànzi san thought to herself. The ronin leader was asking for a duel, they did not deserve such an honor but her master merely bowed. Then using a mint green cloth he wiped his blade down an sheathed it. He stepped forward to the appropriate distance and took his stance.

The ronin shouted, “Shūchū (focus)!” Donoha never broke eye contact with the slight nod. Next the ronin shouted, “Sutoraiku (strike)!” Donoha swung and had the ronin been any less of a brickhouse of a man they would be dead! From his left shoulder out their right hip was the gash of crimson beginning to color everything they were wearing!

He swung and it was able to tear away some of Donoha’s light tatami armor from his chest leaving a significant wound! He dropped to a knee the tip of Mittsu Tamashi thrust into the dirt to keep him from dropping to the ground. Shànzi saw some of her master blood fall to the dirt on his left side from their vantage. The she saw something amazing happen! She saw Mittsu Tamashi slightly awaken as a nemuranai! Smoke poured from where the copper touched the hard black edge. It then swirled up the blade and Donoha’s arm as he stood making his strike!

He cut clean through from the right shoulder out the left hip completing the “X” in the body before it slid in half to fall in two parts! Then the smoke pulled itself back into the sword! Donoha slumped to his knees leaning on his sword.

Donoha had Shànzi write down his haiku on the way back:
Bandits threaten fair maid,
A hero steps forward to save,
She is grateful, safe.

Donoha apologized for bringing danger to his house. A perplexed Tozawa raised an eyebrow at that. When he explained that his family fought on the side of of the Lion at Kenson Gakka, Tozawa smiled and clapped his shoulder. Next he extoled the virtues of Minoru and the two Akodo samurai at the gate. He also felt the healing guard under watch was no longer a threat.

Despite his wounds he accepted the toast to him of sake for restoring the honor and face of the house. Then he left with an attendant to a room to rest and get aid. Before leaving he told Shànzi to give him her unvarnished assessment since meeting him on the road. Leave out no detail (letting her know it was okay to tell Maki’s tale), Lion to Lion. He asked Tozawa if someone might be able to mend his gear. Tozawa bowed to him and a speechless Donoha slid the door shut.

Donoha was tended to while he slept and did not wake until the Hour of the Akodo (Horse / 12 noon – 2pm) on the 20th of Hantei (Month of the Serpent). The physician treating his wounds made it clear another tenth of a Shaku and he’d be dead. His wounds were healed and while there would be scarring it would not be visible under normal circumstances. Donoha considered getting a Tattoo later to cover it up with ink.

Donoha mentioned to Shànzi they would leave bright and early on the 21st and should make it by night fall on the 22nd. When she asked about lodgings he said they would be staying with his Obachan and Ojīsan (Grandmother and Grandfather) when they arrived. She had discussed it with him when she had handed him the invitation to join the Emperor’s Gift. They would have someone meet them at the Northern gate.

One of the Ashigaru assigned to attend Donoha did knock when he heard them talking and informed them because of Donoha’s mon, a runner had been sent on to Otosan Uchi to let Seppun Sora (Donoha’s Grandmother on his father’s side) know of his delay because he had helped Tozawa sama. Matsu Shànzi had yet to see his mon have any affect on people, but after the service he provided Tozawa sama. The Akodo samurai spared no expense when one of the heimin craftspeople asked if they were allowed to work on clothing of a person related to the Imperial family.

Even Shànzi had been questioned about their travel plans and knew he was related to the Seppun, but it did not take historians long to figure out the connection was A) real, and B) whom it was. Shànzi was allowed to read the scrolls about Seppun Yūshū, whom used to be Kitsuki Yūshū before marrying into the Seppun because valorous and glorious deeds for the Emerald Empire.

They learned about the first born being given to the Seppun line and the second born would be given back to the Dragon. All subsequent children would be in the Dragon family. Most thought the boy would be a Seppun but the first boy ended up being the second child and Kitsuki Orochi was Donoha’s father. Where the first born child was Seppun Mariko and Donoha’s elder aunt. There third child was Kitsuki Hotaro and was married off to the Akodo family!

As far as Shànzi san was concerned it was unlikely for samurai to lie, but what were the odds of meeting a relative of the imperial family? Just making their way with no entourage to the empire’s capital city and needing a retainer! Now she was not just going to see the capital of the empire but she would likely be one of the few to see the inside of the Forbidden City where the Emperor lives! As a bard of the Lion Clan this was astounding!

All of his equipment had been repaired: the tatami light armor, he had been gifted and average quality kimono set (pants, under shirt, and obi) of yellow with green shashiko stitching on the trim in geometric shapes. It was the additional fine kimono that had taken her breath away. She stare at it on the stand before he had woken up for whole hour (two hours for us) of the day!

Donoha made it a point of trying at least twice to refuse such a fine kimono given the yellow one would have been fine. Alas, Tozawa sama would not hear of it and Donoha made it a point to wear it out on the 21st when they left at dawn. It was the least armored Shànzi had seen him. They had made a detachable right shoulder plate of lacquer leather for Shirogane to sit on which would tie across his chest and his right upper arm!

Yukiabo looked at though they were primed for a parade. Donoha had Shànzi sit in fornt this time as he had to have several stretches on Yukiabo of faster pace to reach Mura Kita Chushin (North Hub Village) by nightfall. They did sleep in a little bit but likely only three hours of the day’s worth (six hours for us). When they left Mura Kita Chushin it was only the beginning of the Hour of the Moon (Dragon / 8AM to 10AM). Once they crossed the great bridge over the waterway that feeds the River of the Sun which cuts through Otosan Uchi he slow the pace to a trot and they take a small break there to water and rest Yukiabo.

They arrived at the area with the assembled caravan out by the north gate of Otosan Uchi’s Hojize district. They arrived just after the Hour of Bayushi (Rooster / 6PM – 8PM) began. Along the road the road where the Emperor’s Gift caravan was being staged. They came to the official Clan Guide Houses where Donoha mentioned he would meet Shànzi after they had their bath.

However a strange presence was waiting by the Dragon and Lion guide houses. Samurai wearing the Mon of the Emporer were standing out side of each. It was the Miharu – the Imperial guard! There was a few heimin servants with each and a exceptionally dressed samurai of Dragon and Lion clans standing with them. The one of the heimin of each group had a sign with the names of each respective rider of Yukiabo. Shànzi looked at Donoha as the rode up with raised eyebrows to the Dragon guide house and dismounted.

When Donoha bowed to the Miharu Samurai (all of whom are inducted from the Seppun family and their relations) and introduced himself and Shànzi. Shirogane flew up and saw his master doing the “thing” again. When it landed on Yukiabo it spread it wings and bowed as well! The head of the Miharu (Seppun Honor Guard – alt name from resarch) samurai nodded and said, “Taka-san, any bird that shows respect like that is welcomed, go feed it.” A heimin in the group pulled a strip of meat and appraoched in a manner suggesting he handles animals for their work. Shirogane saw the outstretched hand with meat hanging and the great bird swooped in to grab it and landed on the same spot of the packs on Yukiabo.

Another heimin waved a flag that might have been mounted to a Samurai’s armored back. Made of golden silk, it alerted the other group their target had arrived. The two Emerald Ambassadors for the Dragon and Lion clans introduced themselves as Mirumoto Tanetsu and Kitsu Tsuguri. Shànzi san was very demure since Tsuguri sama was also the Family Damiyo for this branch of the Lion Clan! Kitsu heard about Donoha’s Lion retainer and that both had aided Tozawa sama of Shiro Akodo.

Donoha and Shànzi, well mostly Shànzi, was being explained about the house with bathing, clothes, and food to welcome them from there journey. When she was able to politely get Donoha to pay attention he nodded his understanding. Only after investigating a crime did Shànzi realized he had grasped everything and was not brushing her off. Details are his strong suite. He’d been engaged with talking to Tanetsu sama about his interest inspecting the only other sword that had made an eight man cut!
