星が落ちる Hoshi ga Ochiru, the Starfall

Tamae, the Wandering Storyteller, stood upon the other side of the door panel as it was moved out of the way by the Dragon. Donoha sama invited her into the house’s engawa (veranda or porch in low Rokugani). Thankfully he had begun to heat a tea pot so even with the mostly wooden shoji to protect from the elements it began to heat up.

He explained that his purpose for greeting her was to congratulate her on telling his story. This garnered the same look of disbelief. Not one of surprise, but more akin to – you can’t possibly be him. As courteously as his training taught him he explained that if she knew the story then seeing Mittsu Tamashi 三つ魂 the Three Souls Katana should solve this. Setting it down so she could verify the engravings, and calling upon Akodo Chun san’s spirit to make them flash in green light. They exclaimed that the burst of light had not been written about and the Dragon told her to check out book six when it is released in the Crab lands.

When the conversation and questions finished about his identity and some of the adventures. He realized most people would not believe him, or the tales. Inwardly, he thanked Akodo Chun for their help in validating his identity, releasing them from active duty. After seeing his guest out he finished his tea, cleaned the set, and settled into sleep. Outside, by the pit, both Isawa Tamaki san and Taro san watched over their prisoner, Doji Kyouji san. The Phoenix shugenja made sure the peasant boy went and bathed because for some reason Donoha sama wanted to try and educate the only survivor of the most recent attack upon their person.

When the 6th of Shinjo (Month of the Dog {OOC: November}) began as Lady Sun started to pull back the sheet of night Lord Moon had cast. Two men found themselves on a horse given to the Unicorn shugenja when they ventured forth from the Emperor’s Gift caravan. Otaku Gunba san and Shosuro Hanzo san had made it up the ridge to the tall pine the village was named for. They had a brief conversation before beginning to meditate as the village began to rise. Then they heard the rumble and roar! Looking into the sky they saw a star falling from it!

To say that things happened quickly at that point may be the understatement of the whole year! The Unicorn shugenja leapt upon their steed and the Scorpion courtier was right behind them! You’ll be hard pressed to find a better battle tested shugenja that Otaku Gunba san. Using just their legs they called upon the Earth Kami to make a path straight down the side! Bypassing the switch back trail then came the miracle of Otaku Gunba sama!

Working their prayers with the Earth Kami they lifted and slid the whole village out of immediate danger! Following that they made a wall to deflect most of the blast from wiping the village off the face of Rokugan! Once danger from the falling star passed it slowly began to move as close as it could back to its original spot. The amount of lives saved is frankly, everyone present that day!

In the village, chaos was mostly directed by Kitsuki Donoha sama ordering villagers to flee as he and Isawa Tamaki san ran towards the crash site. They soon met up with Gunba sama and Hanzo san and made their way to the crash site. Upon reaching the location they found a rock that had made a “hot springs” of sorts with its crater and instantly melted snow!

The Phoenix shugenja began to reach out to the kami to examine the rock while the Unicorn shugenja kept the villagers occupied and away from something that may be dangerous. Through the Reflections of Pan Ku and Read the Essence spells they were able to determine this was not a portent from the Kami or Fortunes. It was simply traveling through the void and landed here by happenstance. Donoha sama had tested the rock with Chikai kodzuchi 誓い小槌 the Oath-hammer, and his bare finger which was burned.

After talking with the village leaders they learned from Gunba sama they were in the lands of Mirumoto Masashige sama. Hanzo san began to look for a cart nearby at Donoha sama’s direction and Gunba sama headed back to the village to try and find chains. This was due to Donoha sama deciding to take the rock to the Dragon Clan Champion and let them decide what to do with it. Hanzo san was able to find a cart and the family loading it to leave. He politely encouraged them to help bring the rock to the High House of Light.

There was a discussion about how to move forward between the Phoenix and the Dragon. They eventually worked out a plan to remove the Fire Kami in the rock in hopes they could move it. However, once it rose out to make a miniature version of Lady Sun, several things began to happen!

Journey to the Mountain’s Anvil

On the morning of the 20th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}) the four samurai made their way back into the mine. They left the Bell of Air at its repaired station by the entrance. There were plans to add a small shrine into the wall next to it, but Tatsu san had not started on it yet. Continuing on to the chamber with the jade and obsidian they made their way deeper.

Otaku Gunba san recommended sealing the chamber back up until they could figure out how to handle the situation. Isawa Tamaki san agreed and they both thought the Stone Mask of Water and the Lantern of the Void should be sealed up inside. This would prevent someone else from finding this and exploiting it before steps could be taken to secure the safety of the jade and the kami.

Shosuro Hanzo san was moved once again upon seeing such a deliberate sign of the power of the kami. Turning to Donoha sama as they rested their hand upon the jade floor that had been changed into un-tainted obsidian during the pacification of the kami. Well known for their aversion to being dirty or unclean this was surprising behavior to say the least. Turning to the Dragon, “Donoha sama, have you ever seen something so beautiful that everything else you looked upon afterward faded a little, as though other things somehow lessened in clarity and importance?”

The Dragon nodded, “I understand exactly what you’re going through.” The Dragon made a note about things that made his newest friend tick. Setting the Stone Mask of Water and the Lantern of the Void within the jade cavern opening, they asked the Unicorn and Phoenix shugenja to seal the opening once more. It was done and Tamaki san added mons for the Fortune Osana-Wo, Fire, Earth, and the clan mons of the five samurai that helped this village in the stone.

Jiro san would be told to not touch the wall with the mons etched upon it until their return from Suigeki Toshi. The group returned to the village and by the 24th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}), everything had been repaired and upgraded slightly. The buildings all had stone filters to collect snow and rainwater. It would filter into the small gardens and produce food to help feed the villagers. None of the buildings were drafty. The shrine was visited everyday now and Jiro san was leading everyone in exercises at the beginning of the workday. When they were off their work they wore and treasured the kimonos they had been gifted. The two spares that were left were kept as permanent offerings in the shrine. Should the kami ever wish to wear them and walk among the people.

During the 20th to the 24th Taro san had been exclusively helping as Donoha sama’s assistant. Fetching things for him while he was at the forge teaching Tatsu san his craft. Both with the Hammer of Earth and without so he could appreciate what a gift he was being tasked with wielding. This also served in allowing Donoha sama to the chance to experiment with what the nemurani hammer was capable of.

When it came time to depart the mining village of the Serpent’s Tail mine. Donoha sama requested Tetsuo san to let Jiro san know that he would be taking Taro san with him as his retainer. Of course no one complained but the Dragon was fond of having his intentions known by all so their could be little debate.

Thus the last member of the six people that had tried to kill Donoha sama became his retainer as the left towards Suigeki Toshi or Water Hammer City is low Rokugani. The name has been change fairly recently to Mountain’s Anvil Castle as it has grown into a full city with a castle and lord. Becoming one of the largest metal manufacturing centers in the Dragon lands. Not wishing to push themselves the group arrived on the 25th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}). The Dragon knew they had arrived before ever seeing the towers of the buildings built on and into the mountains. The ringing of anvils gave away their location and it was one of the sound Donoha sama always equated with sheer joy.

Upon arriving to the center of the city which had a small castle for governing the day to day affairs of the city. The group was approached by a young male in a very fine but subtlety embroidered kimono of shades of green. They stopped a short distance as Donoha sama broke away from his companions leaving his horse with Taro san to hold the reins while Hanzo san waited next to it. The others had been leading their mounts as well. The entire city streets had been cleared of snow and it was obvious there were people dedicated to not just removing snow but keeping them clean of all debris!

The young male introduced themselves as Mirumoto Renjiro, acting governor of Mountain’s Anvil as his father has passed away. Donoha sama introduced themselves and expressed condolences for the passing of the young Mirumoto’s father. Sharing that their fathers likely knew of each other. Prompting Mirumoto sama to ask if Donoha sama’s family ran the copper mine he had heard about. The Dragon courtier confirmed as such.

Next, the Mirumoto introduce a member of the Crane and the Scorpion clans, which notedly surprised Donoha sama! This far into Dragon lands to have retainers from other clans seemed strange but would have been normal in Otosan Uchi. Doji Kyouji san from the Crane Clan and Bayushi Koruma from the Scorpion clan. The Crane looked as graceful and elegant as Doji Hoto had once appeared, but this obvious courtier carried no Kakita blade at their side. In fact, they carried no weapon of any kind. Inwardly, the Dragon courtier had to remind himself to not instantly dislike the man based on his interactions with the imposter Crane, Hoto.

The Scorpion on the other hand had a the appearance of a hunched back, carried a daisho. This was the kind of man you warned your children to be wary of when they went outside. It was a textbook description of how most people would describe a Scorpion to someone not of that clan. Even knowing this was likely a facade the man put on when in public. Donoha sama found himself liking him for such a well portrayed falsehood.

Donoha sama in turn introduced each of his traveling in the most unusual way, he started with Kitagawa-neko sama! Getting permission from the Mirumoto governor to display a small portion of the katana upon their back. He revealed the jade infused blade, which glinted green in the light of Amaterasu gaze. Then explaining the cat would follow whomever held the blade. Returning the blade to his back, he then introduced everyone in order of their arrival to the group.

It was discussed about how the young governor was stepping up to fill the role of their late father until the Mirumoto and Kitsuki families could decide upon whom the next governor would be. Donoha sama mentioned their group was with the Emperor’s Gift caravan and they were being led to the High House of Light by Tetsuo san. In order to meet with the Clan Champion on the Emperor’s behalf. He was deliberately leaving out the part about carrying messages to safeguard their cargo.

Then he explained their work on the mine and how it had been run down, attack by the snowmen or yeti of the mountains. Apparently, the Scorpion bushi had faced one while in the service of the young governor’s father and during this acting governor’s tenure. He continued about how the mine and its shrine had been wrecked, and the kami were angered causing the miners to become unable to continue their work. Next, he explained how the Phoenix and the Unicorn shugenja along with their Scorpion courtier were able to pacify the kami while he helped to rebuild the village.

The young governor nodded and explained that their last shipment had been late but these events would easily explain such a delay. Upon asking if the village needed more help Donoha sama said they absolutely would. He explained he had taken Taro san as his retainer in case things needed to be accomplished that samurai could not do. The young governor nodded but did not question the choice.

Donoha sama was studying the advisors during all of this. His trained eye and the *ichi-maru* of the Kitsuki investigators allowed him to see that both the Crane and the Scorpion were looking after this boy the way a parent would. It was also clear that each of them disliked the other. He imagined this is what an Imperial court looked like on a much smaller scale.

Donoha sama offered a gift of craftsmanship before he left. The young governor could provide some iron and he would make something from it before leaving. With being offered such a generous gift the young governor offered them an unused building and they would have lodgings setup while they dined and Donoha sama regaled everyone with tales of his exploits.

With that arrangement made everyone bowed and they parted ways. Tetsuo san had spotted another monk from the Brotherhood of Shinsei, and excused themselves to go and converse. Everyone began to head to their lodgings. The samurai found the house pointed out to them on the cliffside that had been referred to. It was very clean and empty but would have furnishings provided. They set their gear upon and surrounding the box with the missive at Gunba san’s suggestion so it would remain hidden. Afterwards, they tried to seek out if there was a bath-house available somewhere in the city.

They were directed to the waterfall and soon found Tetsuo san engaged with a monk that turned out to be one of the two founders, Haru san! Leaving him to their conversation they soon met the other founder, Agasha Tamori san! It would seem the young governor asked him to come and heat the waterfall for the guests to bath in. Donoha sama tried to gently find out why the Agasha family had defected to the Phoenix. Alas he did not find out that answer as Tamori san did not have it. He did learn that not all of the Agasha had left which was a relief to know the Dragon Clan was not without shugenja!

Explaining each item he left Mittsu Tamashi and the jade katana in the Dragon shugenja’s care. They were honored and Kitagawa-neko sama curled up for a nap upon Donoha sama’s items. He kept his smithing hammer in his hand just as he had done with in the last two hot springs in Phoenix lands. Because the area they were bathing in was secluded from public view they were able to relax. Hanzo san began to play a song for the Water Kami. As Gunba san made sure to commune with the kami and make sure they could hear and enjoy the gift.

During their commune though the Water Kami was sharing visions with Gunba san. During this a dark vision popped up that was very recent but the kami seemed to apologize. Pushing it aside because they did not want to convey something dark when the song was so beautiful to them. After that was over the Unicorn tried to talk with the Phoenix but he had a blissful look on his face. Turning to the Dragon he asked Donoha sama if they could chat for a minute.

The Dragon got out, dried off and collected their belongings. Joining the Unicorn after letting everyone know they shouldn’t keep their host waiting. They discussed in their building about the dark vision and the Dragon made plans to gently poke the bee hive during the upcoming meeting. With everyone soon back together they headed into the governor’s castle.

Upon entering the foyer of the castle they were greeted by a graying haired servant of the young governor. She bowed and stepped aside to welcome them in with a practiced wave of their arm. The Dragon looked for empty sword racks to leave is weapons in. The only sword stand or rack was next to very nice suit of armor that was likely worn by the young governor’s father. It had been positioned on its armor box to look as though it were sitting. Donoha sama knelt before the armor and bowed his head to the floor.

“Thank you for allowing us into your home and the home of your son.”

He removed Mittsu Tamashi and placed it in the lap of the armor, wrapping the gauntlets around the tsuka and saya. Noticing a bowl with incense burning in it he turned to see if he could get some more. The servant was clearly practiced in her craft as she was holding three sticks for him. Donoha sama thanked them and lit the incense before leading the group up the steps to the second floor indicated by the servant. Taro san waited just outside the castle’s door in case he would be called for service.

Everyone enjoyed a well-appointed meal. The Crane courtier and the group’s Scorpion courtier hit it off upon learning both had the same aversion to dirt and uncleanliness. Donoha sama managed to pique the interest of the Scorpion bushi by asking if they could spar in the morning since his cousin had been called away by the Fortunes. He tried to up the ante by baiting him into an actual duel. However, that idea was denied by the young governor. Then he launched into his tales!

The creation of Mittsu Tamashi, traveling Rokugan, the journey back, making history being the only other person to make an Eight-Man-Cut! Following it up with joining the Emperor’s Gift, saving Matsu Mayumi san in Shiro Akodo, the Battle of the Emerald Shades outside of Otosan Unchi. The travels and saving the Moshi shugenja on their gempukku. The numerous times facing the Oni of Remembrance. The liberation of Mori Kage Toshi, the murder investigation of Shiro Shiba. Clashing blades with a Kakita duelist and winning, plus the gifting of their kimono signifying their loss. Traversing Mori Kuroi and arriving in Kyuden Tonbo. Finally the tale of their travels in Meido and Gaki-do. Ending with saving of the miners and rebuilding Serpent’s Tail mine village.

For now, nothing was mentioned of the jade that had been found. That tale lasted well into the evening and everyone enjoyed the telling. Some of Donoha sama’s companions got to hear some events for the first time as they had not been present for everything. Upon returning to their building it was indeed furnished and none of their belongings had been touch, just as the young governor had promised. The Unicorn verified the missives were still there as Tetsuo san was let in by Taro san. He bore news there is suspicion about how the father of the acting governor passed away. Gunba san mentioned what he learned from the Water Kami and Donoha sama nodded, the game was afoot!

Compassion’s Conclusion, Corrective Consequences

The six villagers and Donoha sama made it quite the distance into the nearby forest. The Dragon was pointing out to Saburo san, his brother Taro san, and four other villagers, which trees he thought would needed to be felled and then hauled back. They had arrived at a small clearing not visible by a road but with heavy worn foot traffic. Donoha sama thought this must be a common location to get wood for mine supports and to burn. The chest with the missives for the Dragon Clan champion secured to his back with rope was not nearly as heavy as he thought it might be.

What caught his attention was the villagers all pulling from their packs katana in various stages of deterioration. Clearly these weapons had not been maintained well. Then they all turned to face him as Saburo san spoke, “This is where it ends for you Kitsuki san, just hand over the chest and we’ll use it to buy a new life for ourselves!”

Unfazed by the weapons and wielders, the Dragon just had a hard believing how stupid these peasants were. Five of the six looked like they had steeled themselves for a fight, yet Taro san looked hesitant and shaky in their resolve. No one here was an actual threat, but he remembered the lucky strike one peasant Lord Asako Takumi had employed nearly killed his cousin. Resting his hand upon Mittsu Tamashi he mentioned Hida Nagahide’s name and the silk-wrapped tsuka felt warm in his grip.

“Please tell me you all are not actually this stupid,” retorted the Dragon samurai lifting his hammer with his left hand while his right remained ready on the three souled katana. They droned on about how they are mistreated by the lords of the land and Donoha sama made a mental note to definitely visit Mountain’s Anvil Castle. He tried to find a peaceful solution, but one of the men rushed him hoping to catch him off guard. Their head was still sailing through the air as the Dragon mentioned it did not have to go this way.

The rest charged except for Taro san, until his brother cried out for him to quit being a coward. From Taro san’s perspective more heads kept flying into the air but he did as his brother commanded. Making the potentially worst swing with a katana in the history of the weapon. It was clear to the dragon he did not agree with these actions but did not want to dishonor his brother. Four heads were sailing through the air as red rain began to fall upon the stark white, snow covered, forest floor.

“Taro, step back and drop your sword if you wish to live today,” the words were the final bit of compassion Donoha had left. Being betray by those he tried to help, wearing the very kimono he had gifted to them. He deliberately had left the “san” off when he addressed the peasant boy. Taro san wisely follow the ultimatum as the Kitsuki delivered on the wishes of the others in granting them a new life. Saburo san’s head left their body, spinning and turning in the air. The thud came in a pair of noises as the first one had hit the ground in conjunction with Saburo san’s body.

“Are you making a statement Itoko-san?”

While Taro san was dropping to a kneeling position and prostrating himself in the snow. Donoha sama turned to the voice that spoke. Coming into the clearing was Asahi sama, Tamaki san, Gunba san, and Hanzo san. The Lion’s look and question was one of curiosity, while the others were far more stern, particularly the Unicorn and the Scorpion.

Hanzo san had his bow ready in case more of the villagers were hiding nearby. Donoha sama had Taro san gather the kimono of the fallen peasants. Prompting the Unicorn shugenja to ask him if he had beheaded the peasants to spare the kimono. The Dragon looked over and simply said, “Yes.”

Still very angry over the betrayal of this attack after everything his group had been doing for the peasants and their village. The Dragon had Taro san hold up one of the kimonos so he could wipe his blade on it. There wasn’t any blood to actually wipe off, the cuts and been so clean and precise that all of it was arrayed around him in the snow. A red bloom of death, gruesome art is normally the trade of the bushi, but with the help of the Crab soul in his sword. He was able to draw his own flower. The act of doing this was to psychologically drive home home how finished he was with being nice. One wrong step from anyone in the village and they could potentially all share the same fate.

When Donoha sama wonders out loud about where the villagers got the worn katana, it was Gunba san that asked if this was the first time the villagers had pulled a stunt like this? Taro san was tasked with gathering the six worn katana and wrap them up with the kimono. Donoha sama wondered if they did this before because of mistreatment at the hands of the daimyo for Mountain’s Anvil Castle? He did not voice his concerns at this time. He was beginning to trust Hanzo san’s fortune telling skills more and more. The group headed back to the Serpent’s Tail Mining village.

Upon their arrival everyone was gathered and kneeling in the presence of Tetsuo san, the monk of Shinsei. They approached the group expressing happiness that the four samurai were able to find their Dragon companion. Donoha sama stepped forward to address the crowd. Tamaki san tried to enhance his Dragon friend’s speech with fiery theatrics, as they had in the sake houses. This close to the mine, the Fire Kami would do nothing more than some sparks.

On the way back to the village Asahii sama had filled in Donoha sama about the items they found in the mine and the discovery of Jade! There was the bell which the Dragon explained was often used in signaling people throughout the mine with needed information. Then the stone head hammer with iron and gold ore veins running through it. Followed by the pickaxe with the elemental symbol for fire etched into it and matches the symbol on Tamaki san’s staff. Then came the stone mask that would allow its wearer to see through rock as though they were swimming in water. Lastly, there was the iron lantern with glass-like panels of crystal and jade!

Donoha sama was nurturing a guess about the items but had to deal with the village first. He stepped forward and addressed everyone with his full name, and that he came from Copper River Manor. This ccopper mine had been in his family for a long time. He was very familiar with miner’s work and metalworking, smelting, crafting the ore into works of art. However, his compassion had just run out with the attack that had been carried out against him.

He made it very clear that if anyone steps out of line he would be inclined to wipe out the village and get new workers to start over. Furthermore, they have one last chance to rebuild their lives and village. Taro san was to be allowed back into the village and no harm was to befall him for trying to honor his brother even though he clearly disagreed with him. The five kimono he had would be given to Jiro san to redistribute among the villagers as needed. The six katana would be kept in the house they were using. If there were any more katana in the village turn them over now or pay the price if found later.

Tatsu san and Jiro san moved to help Taro san with the items in question. Donoha gave rough assignments to the villagers. The group being sent out to cut the trees were also to bury the bodies. While done out of earshot from any of the samurai word spread about how proficient the Dragon courtier was with his katana. While he deliberately did not always acknowledge it, if a villager passed his line of sight they would bow quickly and hurry along.

When a moment presented itself, Donoha sama has Asahi sama test the “earth-hammer” on a rock and confirms his suspicion of these being nemurani of the Agasha when they found the shrine centuries ago. Now this part is Donoha sama’s best guess based on the evidence presented to him. It was likely revealed by some of the kami in the mine. In hopes the samurai would partake in stopping the fighting between the Earth Kami and Fire Kami over whom has rights to the jade that has appeared.

While Tamaki san and Donoha sama work on the shrine, Gunba is the one that managed to succeed in getting the Fire Kami to finally speak with him. While Donoha sama was not sure of what was offered it appeared to be one of the kimono gifted to the villagers. The spirits of fire said they were watching and to tread carefully but they would not interfere with the shrine’s reconstruction. This amazing turn of events allowed him to use another kimono to effect repairs on the four smaller Inari “fox” statues. Using the fire magic of the kami to returned them to a new state as though they had just been made.

While Gunba san retired to the barracks to meditate. Donoha sama asked his Lion cousin over and did something I never expected. He instructed him on how to chisel a hole in a column of wood so he could say he helped with the shrine’s construction. The hammer he allowed him to use was the same hammer he made his katana with, Chikai kodzuchi 誓い小槌 the Oath-hammer! According to our Dragon since the hammer never left his sight he had not broken the oath. I know what your thinking and he explained how he sleeps but that isn’t interesting to write about.

Watching his cousin work and talking with him allowed Donoha to see another opportunity for him to gain experience leading people. He explained that there ware plenty of villagers needing guidance about what to do. It wasn’t that they were lazy, but they needed direction and did not want to overstep or anger the samurai after this morning’s incident. The Dragon suggested it might be good practice for his cousin to treat them like soldiers and keeping the base camp clean and orderly.

The Lion heads out with a renewed sense of purpose and gathers anyone not engaged in a task and they begin on the warehouse clearing and then move to the latrine. This way sanitary conditions with waste can be addressed. During the clearing of the warehouse the come across a small group of foxes and the peasants are instructed to leave them be. While Donoha sama was not aware of them at this time, he had asked Tetsuo san about foxes in the mountains and was told it would be rare to see any this far north.

Now, I have not forgotten about our watchful courtier. While Gunba san meditates our Scorpion patrolled the village and kept a watchful eye on his companions and the villagers. It was far less about keeping everyone safe and far more about making sure if anyone in the village breathed the wrong direction. It would be the last breath they ever took.

After some time, Gunba san awakens or self-rouses from their trance. Having recovered some of their spiritual energy they entreat with the Fire Kami once more and learn things are going poorly in the cavern and they should work out the issue between the Earth and Fire Kami sooner than later. Gunba convinces Tamaki san to join him and when the Phoenix mentions they could use a courtier, Hanzo san offers to join them.

Tamaki san confers with Donoha sama, and the Dragon mentions the nemurani: the Bell of Air, the Hammer of Earth, the Pickaxe of Fire, the Mask of Water, and the Lantern of the Void. Offering suggestions about whom should use each one when dealing with the Kami. The mask he mentioned should go to Hanzo san this time so they can likely see the kami in question. He also wanted to know if the kami want the items left in the mine when they were done or to be kept safely at the shrine? With this information the group of the Unicorn, Phoenix, Scorpion, the Shinsei Monk get ready to depart as Donoha sama and Asahi sama stay work on the village.

Truth in Observation

As Shosuro Hanzo san went through the rote and ritual of their divination. The others gave him space as they set up their camp for the evening. The plan according to Tetsuo was to head out in the morning. Akodo Asahi sama was preparing dinner for everyone when our Scorpion companion finished with their divination ritual and packed everything up and made their way over to the camp.

They explained that they could feel kami, one, perhaps more. They were in a cold and dark place. Whatever problem they were facing the group should find a way to help. Soon our group will run across an unfortunate place and if we try and rush things we’ll create unfortunate ripples for ourselves. Then there was something about a small village very near the High House of Light. We should absolutely stop their and bring calm to some problem that appears to be non-violent.

Donoha sama continues to wonder if perhaps Hanzo san started their life in their alternate Ningen-do as a monk and somehow became adopted into the Scorpion clan and trained as a courtier. The reason for his line of thought is that the Brother of Shinsei, Tetsuo san, explained that their were some problems reported at the Serpent’s Tail mine not to many days travel ahead and their true purpose was to report to Togashi Hoshi sama how the five samurai dealt with the situation! He then shared the instructions from the Dragon Clan Damiyo was – I will be here when you arrive, no need to rush.

Togashi Hoshi sama alluded to having familial relations with the Scorpion clan, perhaps his mother. Donoha sama did not wish to broach the topic further in order to be polite and respectful. So far every interaction he’s had with the Scorpion clan, regardless of being negative or positive, has drastically altered fate in their favor. Hanzo san appears to be the next one to provide critical information allowing for a positive outcome it seems.

The meal was delicious but Tetsuo san ate and then retired to a small grouping of trees to rest and meditate. Despite offers being made of letting him sleep in one of the tents with the samurai. The monk mentioned this would be a good way to test himself and his training. The Dragon informed everyone he would be heading off to train, but not with bokken this time. He’d learned some new things about the sword he made in the spirit realms. He was going off to train with it so combat would go smooth rather than surprising himself.

The Scorpion followed after a fashion and watch the practice from a safe distance. At the beginning of what appeared like bushi studying a new school technique there were emerald green flashes coming from both sides of the blade. Their keen archers eyes could make out the marks after repeated flashes when he would reset from a technique. One side read “Mittsu Tamashi” or “Three Souls” in low Rokugani. The other was a bit longer spelling out “Itami wa chie to hikikae ni sa reru” or “Pain is traded for wisdom” in low Rokugani.

Some of the movements the Dragon practiced reminded him of how the Lion fought, others seemed to be training how to defend a person or a space from multiple attackers. Then the came the one with brutal bursts of speed where he appeared to strike twice with each swing. When the Scorpion began to chat with the Dragon he did not seem to mind the added complexity of maintaining a conversation while trying out techniques. When he finished practicing both of them turned in for the night.

On the 9th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}), the group was making their way along a trail when they came across a group of 8 peasants. The closer they got the more hurt and haggard they looked. Donoha sama had been leading Yukiabo while he had Hanzo san on the horse and Tetsuo on its other side. The Dragon had everyone pause as he approached the group waving his hand and calling out. The group moved to the side with the mountain and he approached. They were clearly trying to let the samurai pass by but this Dragon was a Kitsuki.

Intrigued by what got them in this state, he squatted and asked which one spoke for the group. Tatsu san was the one that spoke up and mentioned they had come from the Serpent’s Tail Mine. Problems had begun occurring in the mine. According to the Dragon, he was told they had seeking help to fix the problem but two days back two of their companions had been taken in the night. It seems the assailants match the description of yeti.

Donoha sama engaged his group and Tetsuo acted as the mediator between the samurai and the peasants. It seems they were worried their attempt to get help could be seen as abandoning their duties. Hanzo san was quick to point out that depending on how one looks at it that could very well mean a swift death at their lord’s hand even if help was found. There was a tense discussion between the two courtiers as each took opposite stances on the issue. The Dragon made it clear he would see it as seeking help and make sure the lord of the area saw it in the same light. The Scorpion apologized if he had offended the Dragon, but Donoha sama told him anyone not willing to listen to an opposing point of view was unwise. He reiterated that he valued Hanzo san’s opinions.

Otaku Gunba san had stayed back guarding the box with the missives from the Emerald Ambassadors. While Isawa Tamaki san moved up to heal them with the Lion assisting him. Next, Akodo Asahi sama made rice for everyone with boiled beans and root vegetables. Tetsuo san made sure to convey this in a manner to let them know they had succeeded in finding help. We made it clear we would go back and find either their companions, or at least confirmation of their death. Then the samurai would move on to the Serpent’s Tail Mine and help there as well.

It took about a day and a half to reach the ambush site on the 11th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}). During that time Donoha sama has taken some of the extra padded kimono he had for layering in colder weather and gifted one to a miner. Mint green with dark green sashiko quilting this was still worth a few koku. To another he passed an obi that they could wrap around their face to keep the snow out. At the location it was decided the Phoenix and the Dragon would be the ones to descend over the side into the snowy mist in search of the yeti and the missing members, Shige san and Yohei san.

Just before they were ready to descend Tamaki snapped their fingers and mentioned they had this covered. They removed an ofuda charm from their hat and cast the spell they refer to as Embrace of Kenro-Ji-Jin to swim through the rock! To say the miners were stunned to see him leave and return from the earth was an understatement.

They were able to find one of the arms of the miners and returned with the unfortunate news of their confirmed deaths. Time was taken to build to graves with piled stones and each peasant was given time to pray at them as they began to grieve the loss. Tamaki san offers rice & candles at each pile of stones with names on ofuda charms anchored tot he rocks. Gunba san honors them in the way of the Unicorn, before returning to the missive box and trading out with Asahi sama. Hanzo san rang their bells for the souls to find their way to Emma-O’s gate, and Donoha sama prays to Emma-O.

It was another two days before arriving at the mine’s village on the 13th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}). The only reason everyone was far more hearty upon arriving was Otaku Gunba san repeatedly using Inari’s Blessing to create food and drink. Once the group got close the miners and Tetsuo offered to move on ahead and get the village ready for the samurai’s arrival. Consent was given to do so and when the five samurai made it to the village it was the Hour of the Goat or Doji in High Rokugani (OOC: 2-4 PM).

The group met Jiro san, the village’s foreman for the mine and the miners were clearing out a large bunk house for the samurai to use. The Dragon knew it was useless to stop them, so he just made sure no one was going without shelter. Preferring to carry his own items in he tasked Tatsu san with putting together his collapsible sword stand. Everyone began to settle in before they learned about the history of the Serpent’s Tail Mine.

Road Back to Ningen-dō

Donoha sama had long thought the souls belonging to owners of the blades that make up Mittsu Tamashi were inside the blade already. It had not occurred to him that what he’d managed to perform was creating a tether to those souls. A link to them in Gaki-do! In some ways he was destined to have to journey to Gaki-do in order to save them and bring them forth from the punishment of the realm of the hungry dead.

The three shadowy souls of Hida Nagahide san, Shiba Tsukasa san, and Akodo Chun san fell in line behind the Dragon courtier as musical bells began to ring out. Donoha sama was becoming convinced that one of Hanzo san’s relatives or close family friends had been a monk in his world’s Brotherhood of Shinsei. Their knowledge of rites typically done by monks whom focused on rituals for points in one’s life seemed prolific to put a word to it.

They all returned in mass to the shrine where Donoha reverently replaced the Karmic Key. After bowing in a show of respect to his part in helping the five samurai defeat the Queen of Hunger. He retreated to allow the others to make their feelings known. They have, after all, saved the process of reincarnation! Hanzo continued their performance with the bells used by monks to help guide souls to their place in reincarnation. Normally done from Ningen-do or Rokugan depending upon how the scholar wishes to describe the world.

Outside the shrine’s entry the mist parted to form a column of golden light. They were being granted passage back to Meido. With the constant echo of bells helping the shadowy souls find their place in a train behind the heroic samurai. Once everyone returns to the realm of waiting the one known as Tenth Kami appeared before them once more. The shadowy souls immediately began to find their way back into the line to be weighed again by Emma-O, the fortune of Death. This time their suffering in Gaki-do would be weighed as well and their chance at reincarnation seemed almost a given!

When the Tenth Kami turning their attention back to the group. The Lion bushi was knelt on one knee. The Dragon courtier in a kneeling bow with his head low and hand in gesture of contemplation. The others had deferred their gazes respectfully, and three lone souls stood behind Donoha sama watching him.

“Kitsuki Donoha san why have these three souls decided to remain with you?”

To be addressed directly by one of the Great Kami is a rarity for anyone in Rokugan since the founding of the empire. The Dragon courtier refused to touch his sword in the presence of the Tenth Kami when he answered.

“I believe these are the souls of Shiba Tsukasa san, Hida Nagahide san, and Akodo Chun san. Either their blades failed them and broke during their time as bushi samurai, or they failed their lord in their service. I was gifted each of their katana and used it to make the katana at my side, Mittsu Tamashi. I wanted to serve the empire by making swords that could be used to redeem the souls of samurai that had fallen. To give them another shot at reincarnation.”

The Tenth Kami spoke, “They have that chance and have decide to stay and serve you within the blade. I shall bind them to that fate they have chosen.”

With a raise of their hand each of the souls took the shape they had in life. Constructed by an outline of tiny pieces of light as though drawn in the dark sky. Then they became a bright mist that was absorbed into the handle of Mittsu Tamashi. Each time making it glow before settling down.

The Tenth Kami continued, “You have all done a service to every soul here and ones having gone through reincarnation. I will grant a boon to speak with a soul that has passed on.”

The first to choose was Akodo Asahi sama and they chose to speak with their father, Akodo Isoroku. Once their soul took form the two were allowed to wander off and have a private conversation. Hanzo and Donoha talk about the fact he came from a different history. Without meaning to the Dragon mentioned the Emperor had a vision and put the Emperor’s Gift Caravan together for forestall or alter that fate. According to Shosuro Hanzo san that moment is the event that led this world in a better direction than his.

Isawa Tamaki san asked to speak to the original Thunder Isawa sama themself! Only to be informed they had gone through reincarnation and were on Ningen-do actively at this moment! The Phoenix shugenja then asked for a private conversation with the Tenth Kami after everyone else was done, and was granted their request. I wish I knew what they asked but alas somethings must remain private.

Thinking about what he wanted Donoha sama missed what both Otaku Gunba san and Shosuro Hanzo san asked for. He gathered they seemed happy, or maybe relieved at the outcomes of those discussions. The Scorpion courtier seemed to think this world was a blessing to him now. The Unicorn shugenja seemed a bit more contemplative about his their result.

Donoha thought about the people they could talk to that were dead and decided to try and make this a gift. He asked if he could pass this gift to the Ikoma. He tries to get a boon for the Ikoma family daimyo, Ikoma Anakazu sama. Acknowledging how much the Ikoma damiyo has done for him in the last year he asked the Tenth Kami if such a boon was possible. The answer was that it may be possible for them to grant such a desire. He would have to pray when he was near the person and hopefully the Tenth Kami would hear the prayer.

After all conversations were had, the group headed back into the mist and became one with it again as they were once greeted by the Maiden of the Void, Chiasa. Donoha and she shared a brief moment, although this author is sure it felt much longer to the Dragon than it was. She told him their would be a time in the future they could be together but her duties would not allow it yet. At the mention of possibly infringing on her duty to her cause or lord. He stilled his spirit and apologized for he would not wish to cause her any harm. It was a look shared of two people in love. The mist swirled as she sent them home to Ningen-do.

Back in the Dragon lands each of them came to on the 4th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}), 1123. Three days had past and Togashi Hoshi sama had been caring for them and their mounts while their souls had been away. As everyone was beginning to realize how hungry they were for not eating for three days! Donoha sama and Gunba san shared a brief look about the journey. The Unicorn wandered off to the horses is soon joined by Donoha as he goes to groom Yukiabo, his personal horse. When he asked if the Unicorn shugenja was alright, Gunba san assured him it was nothing of import. The Dragon courtier leaned back and rubbed his eye apologizing for snow getting in it.

Togashi Hoshi welcomes us back as Donoha sama returns. Asahi sama begins cooking food with provisions. They are so talented at cooking one wonders if they had not cooked for a Hantei in a past life. The Dragon and Scorpion courtiers play a game of Go to pass the time. Donoha won the game, and its been a fair amount of time since the game they played in the Valley of the Centipede in Moshi no Machi against the Mantis captain, Yoritomo Sekimoto san.

As everyone was eating the food Donoha sama praises his cousin’s cooking alongside Hanzo san. After their food was done the Scorpion acted out one of the classic tales done normally in kabuki or noh mask theatre. They are an accomplished actor and everyone enjoyed the tale. Tamaki wanted to try and meditate during most of the meal. even going as far with magic of the kami to pull a flaming log up to him through the air to keep warm. Eventually, the log was not enough and they had to leave their spot they had claimed on a rock column. Even Gunba returned when the group was given our next destination on the way to the High House of Light.

The group was informed there is a shrine on a lake to Fukuro-kujin, the fortune or Wisdom and Mercy. There we will meet our next guide, Tetsuo san. Donoha sama asked about a few details of the shrine. Togashi sama confirmed and the Kitsuki nodded that he’d seen the shrine before but it was never on his way to or from Copper River Manor where he was born. The group decided that since the day was only coming upon highsun they begin their journey with haste. They packed up being rested, refreshed, and fed most importantly.

As they began to travel Asahi broke into song several times with amazing renditions of ballads heard around the Empire! Their voice is a joy to listen to, clearly another past life coming through this very talented samurai. Donoha sama gathered a thick branch and began to carve it in his lap on Yukiabo with his chisels and smithing hammer. He finished it on the following day of the 5th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}), 1123. He presented a three compartment stackable inro box to be worn from their obi. A scorpion was carved upon both its sides and stretched over the three compartments.

During the trek the group shared a number of shared moments between the group. When they arrived at the shrine on the 8th of Bayushi (Month of the Rooster {OOC: October}). Both the Lion and Dragon were inspired to come up with a haiku which I will record below. Donoha’s Haiku:
Quiet mind at peace.
Peaceful heart, a knowing smile.
Wisdom’s gentle light.

Asahi’s Haiku:
Cold Snow Falls So Clear
A Statue’s Silent Gazing
Mercy and Wisdom

Tetsuo introduced themselves to the group. Then offered them a chance to visit and pay their respects. The Lion and the Dragon bow and kneel at the stairs to offer their prayers. The Scorpion took some wonderful incense to burn at the alter of the fortune. After their prayers the Phoenix offered some of theirs as well. The Unicorn took the most time but he carved a token to add to the altar. They did a job that made them feel the Fortune would be happy with the offering. As they came out Shosuro Hanzo was beginning a divination by the nearby lake.

Scroll of Kitsuki Donoha Part 36

The Queen of Hunger

Shosuro Hanzo san performed a divination to see if he could find a way to remove the Karmic Key from the pedestal. It matched the same result of Donoha’s investigation. There did not appear to be a non-supernatural way to take the disc off. What they did learn was that the stone was different but fused in a way masons were unable to do.

Isawa Tamaki san offered to use their spell, Reads the Essence, on the disc and they were granted a vision. In it they learned the disc and the pedestal are fused using the four elemental kami with the first being air, followed by earth, fire, and water. They explained upon coming out of their vision they would need to figure out how to unlock it to remove the disc.

Gunba san and Tamaki san discuss the options and the use of the spell, Reflections of Pan Ku. Tamaki san was trepidatious because their was no confirmation yet this disc was the Karmic Key. Being in another spirit realm how would their magics behave? Donoha sama mentions to Tamaki san to practice Yu (Courage) and do the thing because they’re afraid not because it is safe and easy. Tamaki san thanks the Dragon for their wisdom and performs the spell. The Phoenix confirms Hanzo san’s divination.

Asahi sama and Donoha sama acted as guards during this time. Gunba san shares the concern of Tamaki san that this may not be the Karmic Key. They begin discussing his concerns and it is decided to try and entreat the kami in the reverse order of the seal. The Phoenix shugenja begins to communes with the Water Kami, via a bowl and a waterskin he keeps for such purposes. The water becomes a misty cloud, but to the Phoenix they saw the kami before them. The Water Kami shows how to unlock the key. When asked about if they were forced to perform the sealing they said they were made offerings and accepted to help in exchange for the tributes paid unto them. Tamaki san asked if they would help and they said they would once the other three elementals kami had found a host. The Water Kami chose Tamaki san as their vessel.

Otaku Gunba san goes for the Fire Kami next and Asahi sama donates some cherished letters he swore he could re-create as an offering. With their questions they confirm two important things. One, the disc is the dormant state of the Karmic Key. Two, they are doing the ritual correctly to unlock it. Their next question explains that if the Queen of Hunger continues to devour the souls of Gaki-do then they will have the power to move to other realms and destroy the karmic cycle of reincarnation! Death would become permanent there would be no chance to redeem your soul in your next life! The Fire Kami agrees to help if Asahi sama is their vessel. The Lion agrees and is surrounded by a swirling mote of flame.

There was some talk about whom the last two vessels will be. Gunba san felt he would be a sure fit for earth. A few thought Donoha would be the one to represent air. The Dragon thought and suggest they would like choose Hanzo san for being more dexterous than he was, despite the surprise from his cousin. When looking for actual earth to use, because the ground around him was being adjusted mystically to prevent a state of madness from setting in. Donoha sama offers up his last finger of jade to the Unicorn shugenja in order to invoke the Kami of Earth. The jade dissolves into a fine grain jade sand and they swirls into a cloud. The Earth Kami was quite pleased with such an offering and chooses Gunba san for their vessel.

The Phoenix shugenja then performs the commune for the Air Kami using a deep breath and then exhaling to offer the wind of their body. The first question informed them and later shared with the group. They will need to put the Karmic Key inside of the Queen of Hunger to prevent them from using foul, dark magics against the five samurai. The kami spirit is willing to help if Hanzo is the vessel and the Scorpion agrees.

There was some trepidation on how to apply the kami spirits to the stone pedestal. Donoha sama suggested everyone to stand around the pedestal and take their left arm. Then use it to touch the person to their left forming a connection between them all. Next, take their right hand and place on the pedestal in reverse order: Water, Fire, Earth, and Air. This process works and the disc transforms back into its oval shape with engravings denoting the cosmos upon it!

Stepping in between the four Donoha takes the key gently in both hands and lifts it free from the pedestal. The others then broke their connections to the pedestal to gaze upon what the group had suffered for. When Tamaki san asked to cast the Reflections of Pan Ku upon it the Dragon handed him the Karmic Key and once his hand let go. The artifact yanked Tamaki san’s arm straight down as it made a whopping thud into the ground! Donoha sama could lift it as though it was light as a wooden tray. When they let Asahi sama try the result was the same. Apparently, the Dragon was the one virtuous enough to wield it.

To help the Phoenix shugenja, Donoha sama sits and allows Tamaki san to cast Reflections of Pan Ku upon the Karmic Key. Tamaki san described it as a religious experience, as he saw the history of the Karmic Key! It’s taken on many forms throughout history, but without it the cycle of reincarnation will stop! Only Tamaki san has seen this and managed to keep his sanity. Afterwards, the the group took one more rest before heading out to face the Queen of Hunger.

They left the temple and came upon further corruption of Gaki-Do. Hidden from driving our heroes mad with the illusion affecting their sight. Chiasa’s power to commune with the kami for such a boon is powerful indeed. Coming upon a valley in the shape of a circle as the mists parted to reveal the battlefield. Across the way was a gigantic, but vaguely humanoid shape of shadow. Dark and wispy, thick tentacles of shadow writhed forth from its back and limbs! Eyes made of burning hate, a mouth that exuded a bone chilling breath as though it could still the warmth that was your soul.

Otaku Gunba san prepared everyone with the spell Courage of Seven Thunders. The two Dragon and Lion cousins realized they could not defend against the Queen of Hunger’s physical strikes effectively. Decided it would have to be a full on attack. Tamaki first cast the Embrace of Kenro-Ji-Jin upon Hanzo san. Thus, granting them the ability to swim through the ground and get in closer with the bow and the jade arrows. Next, the Phoenix shugenja cast the Fires of Purity spell upon Asahi sama. Wreathing him in flame to aid in his attack and rebuke strikes upon him with the pure flame of the kami’s blessing!

The battle began with the Lion and the Dragon rushing across the valley. The Unicorn shugenja began a spell called the Tomb of Jade which takes significant concentration to invoke. The Queen of Hunger attempted to invoke fear among them but the spell of Otaku Gunba held firm! Tamaki san began to move in with a Jade Strike spell as the Queen turned their wrath on Asahi sama by causing him to begin turning to stone! Jade flashed overhead from wherever Hanzo san was shooting from! Their shriek from the impact was made worse when the Dragon brought Mittsu Tamashi down upon one of the shadow tentacles while holding the Karmic Key in their left arm.

Tamaki san raced to Asahi sama’s side and pulled the magic from the Lion unto himself using a spell of Void origin! Donoha sama was able to press the Karmic Key against the creature causing it to wail in paint momentarily pause its movement. When the Lion was able to join the fray wielding the ancient jade katana suffused in fire as well! One could have called him the divine judgement of Tengoku! With their flaming strikes they began to tear into the Queen of Hunger! Coordinating with the direction of his Dragon cousin. Asahi sama was able to allow an opening for Donoha sama to use his training with Kaze-Do martial arts and improvised weapons to push the Karmic Key inside the Queen of Hunger!

The shrill howl of pain could be felt in every bone of the samurai present! In what seemed like an explosion of shadow, with no shockwave to follow. The Queen was shriveled up and pulled inside the as though consumed by it, and set back into the karmic cycle from whence it came. The exploded droplets of shadow began to take forms briefly before being freed and set back to the karmic cycle once again. All the consumed souls were being freed not just from the Queen, but from Gaki-Do! As this realization settled upon those witnessing it, or being freed from magics of the Queen. Three droplets of shadow landed in front of the Dragon as they took human form. In unison they began to bow.

A Starlight Quest

Donoha sama described being pulled into and through the Void into the sprit realm of Meido. The land where the dead go before they meet Emma-O the Fortune of Death. Initially the new group of five samurai could not see each other or much of anything. A voice spoke to them explaining a problem of a karmic nature. The Dragon could tell to voice of the woman he loved anytime he heard it. The group soon knew the love of the Dragon as their guide and quest giver.

Composed of stars and light against what appeared to the the black of night or the Void. Hard to be certain if one or the other, perhaps both. As they focused upon her they became little orbs of light that could discern each other. If not directly “see” because they did not have eyes in this form.

How Chiasa san and Togashi Hoshi sama were apparently working together was a question the Dragon wanted to ask but weighed it as selfish compared to the task laid before them. There is an issue within the spirit realm of Gaki-do wear the hungry dead wander. It threatens the balance of the karmic cycle. In order to set the spirit realms back to the way they function. The group must go to the Gate of the Dead and convince the Fortune Emma-O to get passage to Gaki-do and retrieve the Karmic Key to defeat the Queen of Hunger.

Chiasa san warns everyone she has cast a spell to make us see Gaki-do in a manner different than how it would truly appear. To keep from possibly going mad and breaking the group’s minds! While the group asked after points of the challenge before them. Donoha sama made sure she knew her father was doing well, and if she felt safe where she was. She thanked him and assured him she was safe where she was. After she left the group to proceed their march toward the gate. Donoha reminded his Lion cousin of the time he healed Asahi sama in the cave with the stairs. A beam of what appeared to be stars shown down and he was completely healed when the bandage was applied. His cousin acknowledged the memory and Donoha sama mentioned that Chiasa san whom just left was the one he was talking about.

The group had been told about finding the Tori (Gate) of the Dead. Apparently, every path one could take would lead to the gate and the speed at which you would find it had to do with the purity of your soul. After moving through what appeared to them as a barren wasteland they found lines of people filing into a common direction. Everyone in the group had slightly different ideas on how to approach this but Donoha sama simply walked up to one and got in line with the souls of the dead.

When Gunba san, Tamaki san, and Hanzo san looked upon the faces of those in the line they found something unsettling. They had no face to speak of! The legends about this spirit world mention the wiping of your old identity to make way for your reincarnation and that was the closest guess the group could make about what was happening here.

Upon reaching the Tori (Gate) of the Dead the five samurai approached and stood before the throne of Emma-O, Fortune of the Dead. Once proper reverence was given to the fortune sitting upon their throne. They queried the group about why the living were traveling where they should not be? When they gave their explanation about the Karmic Key and the Queen of Hunger, the Fortune of Death’s tone changed to a more pleasant one. They welcomed the champions and bid them pass one and meet the one that would grant them entry into Gaki-do.

Donoha sama said that this part has to be vague. In part because the name of the individual they met was stricken from the imperial records by the first Hantei. This was told to them by the one they met! The person guarding the entry into Gaki-do was the tenth and youngest child of the Sun and Moon! The Tenth Kami, according to an excerpt from the Tao of Shinsei.

“Of the nine children of the Sun and Moon; myself, Doji, Akodo, Shinjo, Hida, Togashi, Bayushi, Shiba, and Fu Leng…” began the Emperor.
“No,” said Shinsei”
“No?” my brother asked quizzically.
“The Sun and Moon had ten children, though you will never know your youngest brother.”

The Tenth Kami stated he would only let pure souls through the gate to Gaki-do to prevent their corruption by Jigoku’s taint. The group’s souls were tested and Donoha sama was the first to pass with Asahi sami passing just after him. The other three began to fade out of existence! The Tenth Kami asked the Dragon and the Lion if they would be willing to bear the others karmic burdens. When they do the others become solid once more.

The Tenth Kami asked if we need anything before entering Gaki-do. Donoha sama was not sure if his sword, Mittsu Tamashi 三つ魂, the Three Soul katana, would be able to harm creatures that you would normally use jade or crystal for. His Lion cousin had that jade katana now, and both the Unicorn and Phoenix shugenja had access to the kami spirits. Tamaki san also had Hisuitsume 翡翠爪, the Jade Talon, that Donoha sama had made for him. Hanzo san was without a weapon he could discern that would harm the creatures they were anticipating meeting!

Donoha sama asked for a weapon to be provided to Shosuro Hanzo san so they could defend themselves. The Tenth Kami said he did not have one to provide him. However, if they needed time to make one he could halt time for a bit around him to allow for such a task! Hanzo san mentioned being very good with a bow and between the Dragon and Lion they had enough fingers of jade to allow Donoha sama to craft eight jade arrows.

As the Dragon began to knap the jade using the edge of the head and handle of Chikai kodzuchi 誓い小槌 the Oath-hammer. Asahi sama began to sing song that somehow lasted the length of indeterminate time Donoha sama needed to make the eight jade arrows. I will list the song below.

In the mountains high and old
Kami’s whisper soft and bold
Waves of time in silence roll
Mysteries of nature unfold

Lanterns flicker in the shrine
Ancient spirits intertwine
Moonlit path our lives align
With hearts a humble sign

Oh Kami hear our song
Guide us where we belong
Your breath makes us strong
Oh Kami hear our song

Cherry blossoms kiss the breeze
Life and death a sacred tease
In the rustle of the leaves
We find truths that never freeze

In the stillness of the night
Kami’s presence pure in sight
Folded hands a prayer’s light
We honor ancient might

The Tenth Kami stretched there arm out to a rolling storm cloud and it tore in half. Through the cloudy cleft came a light that flickered not unlike flame. The five samurai approached feeling no heat but a chill in their very bones. With purpose they left Meido the realm of waiting and entered Gaki-do the realm of the hungry dead.

Chiasa san’s enchantment on the five samurai’s eyes went into effect. They saw a cracked and rocky, barren, wasteland. Despite the ground feeling like soft, and well… Donoha mentioned it felt the same as when he punched person in the stomach. While he was not sure what the other were thinking he was personally very thankful for the visual enchantment.

Then the sounds in the distance of people crying out, dying began to set in. When Hanzo san mentioned it, Donoha sama mentioned that he was having flashbacks to the time he was visiting Kaiu Kabe. He was given permission to visit and collect the blades of a group of fallen samurai.

Their blades had broken during a raid by goblins. Donoha had wanted to restore their honor in his new sword. Every name fresh in his memory: Hida Shimazu san, Hida Nagahide san, Hiruma Kenji san, Hida Moriyama san, Kuni Asakura san, and Yasuki Saigo san. He only had a small moment in time to share his memory of the screams before Asahi sama had sensed the hungry dead found them.

The Lion drew their jade katana as his Dragon cousin drew Mittsu Tamashi. Hanzo san knocked a jade arrow as the Phoenix and Unicorn prepared to draw on the might of the Kami. The plan had been to use the Lion as bait because the creatures of Gaki-do sought him out over everything else back in Rokugan. However, that soon fell apart as the creatures split equally to attack the Dragon and the Lion!

Six total monstrosities of the hungry dead approached and two had been transformed by Chikushudo to each have as many limbs as a spider! The skirmish was fierce and both the Lion bushi and the Dragon courtier were lucky for their armor, school training, and the respective war fan and smithing hammer they carried in their spare hands.

Even with all of this helping them they were getting hammered to keep the attention on themselves. Thus allowing Tamaki san to cast the spell, Jade Strike multiple times. Gunba san to rip rocks from the ground, transform them into jade and throw them at the enemy. Last but certainly not least Hanzo san proved their skill with their yumi bow sinking jade arrows through the creatures and they did not shatter upon landing. Now Donoha suspect part of that it from the true nature of Gaki-do since the ground feels soft to the touch. Only “looking” the part of a rocky wasteland.

This was definitely a team effort. Donoha sama learned something about Mittsu Tamashi during the fight. His sword was warming up when striking the creature only harmed by magic, jade, or crystal! When his blows landed they cut and hurt the creatures as much as the attacks made from jade did! It was a gamble because he was concerned more for the Scorpion courtier that got pulled into this than himself. He trusted his sword would get him through and its clearly an awakening nemurani at this point! After they won, Tamaki san had their magic available to heal both the Lion fully and the Dragon to nearly full health.

Scroll of Kitsuki Donoha Part 27

THE DUEL

The castle town of Shiro Shiba was far more vacant than usual this day. Going on what they knew about Crane clan rumors, which was little. They were under the impression because beauty and art was valued by the Crane. They began looking for a shop that would handle kimonos and other fabric based artistry. It took a bit of time before they came across the Nasu Silk & Satin, and its proprietor: Nasu Meiko san.

Asahi sama said that he was shopping for a custom kimono for a member of the Dragon and Crane clans. There was some back and forth about the custom specifics for each kimono before Meiko san asked if these were for the duel. The notion of a duel quickly becomes gossip in many castle towns. Why the duel was happening became as important as sand in a storm. What became important was that a Dragon was facing off against a Crane! The rivalry went back to the near founding of each clan as to whom could produce the better sword saint or kensai if you speak High Rokugani.

Meiko san became far more talkative about options, needing a rush project, and the Kakita duelist Donoha sama would be facing. Eventually Asahi sama and Gunba san found out the name because that Crane did frequent this shop while visiting their distant relative, Asako Takumi sama. Kakita Ozaki was a Crane duelist of the same rank as Donoha sama, and they possessed one of the famous Kakita blades. Weapons only given to proven warriors of excellence.

During this revelation of information Tamaki san headed off to the Temple of Eternal Flame once more to meditate. When they passed the “Slaughter on the Hill” they noticed the bodies had all been removed at this point. Upon reaching the Temple of the Eternal Flame they found it cleaned but devoid of anybody upon the grounds. They set about creating a vison quest into the Void. In order to get answers about the maladies. They did not return to the caravan until dinner time when the others made it back.

Back at the Nasu Silk & Satin, Meiko san and the Lion were discussing how payment would be arranged when he let slip he was Donoha’s cousin. Meiko san latched onto the chance of a lifetime. She explained she would heavily discount Donoha sama’s kimono for a favor. When the Lion queried what that might be she produced a large scroll-based copy of “In Defense of Honor” from a chest.

“If he could sign this copy, you will have your discount and they will be ready for the duel tomorrow.” The Lion took possession of the copy of Matsu Shànzi san’s work. The two left the store and began to head back to the caravan. Thinking their ailment had abated, Asahi sama offered to make yakisoba for dinner. Everyone was excited and when done both the Unicorn – Gunba san and the Phoenix – Tamaki san both loved the dish. Even Donoha seem to enjoy it while Asahi still had the taste of ash in his mouth.

After dinner Tamaki san went to check in on Agasha Re and update her about the proceedings. While Asahi sama asked his cousin about what he had been up to. Since he had been practicing with Mittsu Tamashi upon their return. He mentioned working on a haiku all day and then read it from the scroll he finalized it upon.

Steel whispers its song,
Clash and spark, a breath escapes,
One falls, silence reigns.

At which point his cousin mentioned running into a fan of “In Defense of Honor” and would like them to sign their copy. Smiling and shaking his head at how popular Shànzi san’s work had become. When his cousin handed him the scroll he noticed this copy had a reprint of the picture he had drawn for her. Whomever made the woodblock of his painting was a skilled artisan. He asked his cousin about this fan and what they did for a living. When the Lion mentioned they were a skilled artisan with textiles he became inspired not just to sign it. He took a few more minutes to write a haiku for them before handing it back to his cousin.

Needle dances light,
Fabric dreams take shape and form,
A world, thread by thread.

9th of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}) – In the morning their was a check on the Dragon’s and Lion’s jade. None of it had dulled or turned black. Asahi sama learned that sticking to a single ingrediant helped to make things go down easier and stay down. Eating ashes or food that tastes that way is horrible and not recommended. Gunba san displayed their magic by making a bland but nutritious meal. It still tasted like ashes, just less than the other food.

Around mid morning both Gunba san and Asahi sama told the Dragon they were headed back into town to deliver the signed book to Meiko san at Nasu Silk & Satin. While they were gone Donoha sama sent a missive to Matsu Shànzi san making sure they knew about the duel and were invited to witness their first official duel. Following that they practiced all day long with the brush and the sword. Drawing a singular character over and over with brush and blade. The character for peace: 平 or “hei” in High Rokugani.

When the setting had reached the horizon Donoha had finished bathing. He dressed in his kimono presented to him by Akodo Tozawa sama of Shiro Akodo. The golden landscape stitched into the green was still resplendent months later with all the travel.

His group was led to the duel, held within a courtyard inside Shiro Shiba’s castle proper. All of the Emerald ambassadors were seated on one side with Asako Takumi position in the center next to Shiba Sono sama. Directly across from the ambassadors were all the spectators that had come to witness a sanctioned duel. Even the ambassadors had to acknowledge that one of the four champions involved in lifting curses. Being a part of a duel was hard pressed to be kept a secret. In the far side from their entrance was three samurai he’d met before. Yasuki Minoru san of the Crab clan, and both Akodo Maki san and Mastu Mayumi san of the Lion clan. Kneeling in the center of the courtyard was his opponent, Kakita Ozaki sama.

Donoha sama joined them in the center of the courtyard as the rules of the duel were read aloud. It was to be to first blood, neither opponent was allowed to die. Killing your opponent would result in the other’s death. The reason for the duel was not disclosed since the public was present. Ozaki sama stood and bowed to the Dragon, which Donoha sama returned the bow to the Crane. While he was not feeling well, and fully aware this was a professional duelist across from him. He had promised his daimyo he would have to win, hs honor was most deffinately on the line. However, he was a direct descendant of Agasha Kitsuki, and not pursuing the truth would stain his family and his ancestor.

It was also not lost on him that his sister, Kitsuki Hoshikiba, would hear of this duel’s outcome. In an agreement his father’s daimyo almost failed to honor, his sister ended up being sent to study at the Kakita school of swordsmanship and a Crane child was sent to the Mirumoto school to study. Now he was sent to test himself against one of the most feared practitioners of the sword.

They bowed to one another and took the center stance. Eyes locked on each other and assessing their opponent. While Takumi sama grinned from the sideline, sure of the Dragon’s defeat by the Crane wielding a Kakita blade. Hands went to the grips of their katana as the duel shifted to focusing on which one of them could draw faster. Time slowed to a crawl as everyone waited with held breath. Donoha sama changed his grip to a reverse grip from the standard one. Then in the span of a second it happened!

FWOOSH!

Mittsu Tamashi – 三つ魂 the blade of Three Souls’ blackened steel with the copper hamon flashed in the setting sun! Very much like the talon of a dragon he struck Kakita Ozaki sama’s right hand holding their blade’s tsuka with just the kissaki tip. There were five hyper quick flicks of his wrist holding Mittsu Tamashi. All of this happened in the span of Kakita sama only getting their blade a tenth of a shaku out of their saya!

By the time it was halfway out he was returning Mittsu Tamashi to be readied for returning to its saya! Kakita Ozaki sama’s face looked crestfallen. Returning their blade and holding up their right hand to show the streak of crimson flowing from the cut on the back her right hand! The three souls within the sword: Shiba Tsukasa, Hida Nagahide, and Akodo Chun were in harmony with that swing. Among the ambassadors Asako Takumi sama was no longer smiling. The Dragon’s opponent walked to the edge of the courtyard next to the Crab and two Lion samurai. Donoha sama turned to the Emerald ambassadors and bowed to them all, then bowed to his sword, and finally kneeled and laid his sword in front of himself.

The gathered crowd began to cheer at such a masterful display of “to first blood” in a duel. While it was likely faster than their eyes could catch. Nothing would stop the sharing tales of the deed with the phrase – Beware the Dragon’s Claw or Ryū no Kagi Tsume (竜の鉤爪) in High Rokugani. Donoha gained his first nickname that day – 竜 爪 or Ryū Tsume, the Dragon’s Claw.

Shiba Sono sama made their way out to the kneeling Dragon, “It pleases me that you were able to keep your honor this day. Now your words, testimony, witnesses, and evidence can be weighed on equal footing as the accused. Thank you for giving us the path forward to avenge this crime.” With that Shiba Sono bowed to Donoha from the waist in front of all to see. The Dragon returned the grand gesture by bowing and touching his forehead to the floor. As this display of honor was happening two Phoenix bushi showed up on either side of Asako Takumi and escorted him away.

After the Phoenix ambassador returned to the others Donoha wiped Mittsu Tamashi down and return it to its saya. His cousin joined him in the center of the courtyard with Tamaki san and Gunba san each holding a black lacquered box. Asahi sama requested Kakita Ozaki sama join them, to which they did so somewhat reluctantly. Asahi sama took the box from Gunba san and presented it as a gift for participating in the duel. The contents of which were a light blue fading down into a light gray. A silk screened dragon encircled the shoulder above a crane just above where the obi sash would sit. Included from Gunba san was a copy of “In Defense of Honor” so they could appreciate the art and the information about their opponent. Both the Lion and the Crane went through the customary three rejections of the gift and three offerings before Kakita Ozaki sama accepted it and then bowed before leaving. They waited only long enough to be returned bows by all present.

Next, Asahi sama presented the box Tamaki san held to his cousin. He explained this was a kimono designed to replicate the blade of Mittsu Tamashi. Donoha opened the box and beheld a work of art. A black kimono with a copper obi and a coppery wavy line separating the wave designs below that. Meiko san at Nasu Silk & Satin had outdone themselves and Donoha returned it to the box saying he would treasure wearing it. It would be what he wore tomorrow.

ACCUSATIONS

Sharing their findings with the other two spurred the Lion into looking at the mon in case he recognized it from any battles he had studied. Its markings did not lend themselves to any of the Shiba mons or those of a martial bent. Asako, as a family had more to do in courtier circles than the bushi. He couldn’t discount a shugenja of the Asako also being the owner, but it seemed unlikely. Finding no additional information to be gleaned from the document they made the trek back during the Hour of the Serpent (10AM – Noon).

Unicorn attendants took the loaner horse and Yukiabo back to the tents where they’re being kept. During their return they stopped to hand the document with the stylized mon over to Shiba Sono sama’s care. One of his known attendants handled the matter for Donoha sama. Before they could leave for food a very recent missive was presented to the Dragon mentioning his horse feeling uneasy. The group indulged the Dragon to have Yukiabo checked out.

Making their way to the outskirts of the caravan, they came across the large, round, tents of the Unicorn Clan called a Ger. These were the makeshift stables the horselords have maintained and operated from since their departure from Otosan Uchi. According to the note the Dragon was looking for the Unicorn samurai known as Otaku Gunba.

With a bit of guidance he was led to the correct tent. Making introductions he found out that there was nothing acutely wrong with Yukiabo. It was a general sense of unease he could still feel among them. The Unicorn had hoped time from the last appearance of Dark Kami in the sky would stop leaving a lingering malaise, but it never really lifted. He went on to vague mention he’d been tasked with getting closer to the issue. So he asked to join the group on whatever mission they had undertaken.

As it would turn out they’re a shugenja of the Unicorn, and the Dragon was excited to another member of the Otaku family. Given how well he’d gotten along with Otaku Kai, he had high hopes this new addition would become a friend in time as well. Gunba san mentioned needing to clear a few items and leave instructions for the other horse attendants. Donoha sama said to meet him at the two wagons the group calls home and he would have a midday meal waiting.

This also gave the group a chance to get out of blood splattered clothing and armor. Everyone headed off to their respective destinations within camp. Attendants mending and cleaning kimonos and armor, while others prepared the meals for the samurai. Since the group had been decreased to three, Donoha sama had asked that the armor stand boxes be moved to the second wagon. It also gave the attendants a place to work, even with a fourth member once more it could still function as a utility wagon.

Once the midday meal was had, the group began to head into the higher end residential area of nobles’ houses. Querying a ashigaru spearmen outside one of the large houses. They found the directions to Lord Asako Takumi sama’s residence. Approaching the two ashigaru spearmen at the entrance to the home’s garden before the house proper.

“Do you have an appointment with our lord?”

Donoha replied, “No I do not but I would like to schedule a meeting with your lord if possible.”

One of the ashigaru nodded and headed off to the house to enquire about an appointment. The four samurai waited patiently for a significant amount of time. When they returned they informed the group, “Our master is ready to see you now it would appear. If you would follow me I will escort you to meet him.”

The group followed the ashigaru through gardens, courtyards, and one onsen! On a mostly enclosed part of the house with orange flowers floating upon its steam accented water. Finally they approached a room with a additional guard. The one slid a door open and inside was lord Asako Takumi.

The group was graciously welcomed. Donoha noted the same mon embroidered upon haori (samurai jacket) as on the document left with Shiba Sono sama. After they were seated and weapons placed on the right of the wielder to make them harder to draw. Takumi sama made it clear to thank Donoha for their service to the Phoenix clan. Clearing out problems that had plagued them for 150 years. He mentioned he considered himself honored to be visited by the Dragon and Lion spoken of among the populace. Afterwards he wondered what had brought him to his home.

“Do you know of Shiba Sono sama,” queried Donoha sama.

“Certainly,” replied Takumi sama.

“I have been tasked with the investigation of Asako Eiko’s murder. My assignment is to clear names off a suspect list by ascertaining where certain people were at the time of the murder.” Donoha realized to late that Lord Takumi sama was Roku-Dan or 6th rank, with quite a bit of status and glory to go with their rank. He had to keep calm, make sure he didn’t cause a scene that would force Shiba Sono sama’s hand, and prevent anyone with him from suffering social backlash. In fact this may be a bigger wave than Shiba Sono sama would like.

“Dreadful business that was, such a shame,” said the Phoenix lord with a sorrowful look draped across his face as though he was a Noh theatre performer.

“I’ll try my best to make my questions brief, I don’t want to waste your time,” Donoha sama bowed his said as he then dropped the proverbial hammer. “There was a document that had a stylized mon on it. Found in the lair of a group of thugs my team and I had finished eliminating. Perhaps you could help me to identify it?”

Takumi sama gestured for him to continue, and Donoha pulled out a small piece of washi paper with Lord Takumi sama’s mon upon it.

“WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS! YOU COME INTO MY HOME AND ACCUSE ME OF MURDER!”

“Begging your pardon but until I came in here I had no idea this was a close match for your mon.”

“HOW DID YOU GET THIS THEN?”

“It was on the document directing the group of thugs to interrupt and thwart the investigation of Asako Eiko sama.”

“WHERE, where is this document now?”

“It is with Shiba Sono sama.”

Standing he began pacing back and forth, “Donoha san, it is very rude to suggest I had anything to do with this you understand.”

The Dragon nodded, “Again, as I have said this entire time. I am trying to get your name off this list and came hearing seeking your aid in doing so.” Donoha sama needed him to see a clandestine offer of help in order to get him to confess his involvement. The reason Donoha sama had a group here is to have witnesses of the events.

Pacing back and forth once more while the Dragon strained his hearing. Concerned there may be additional guards showing up due to the lord’s outbursts. The tension in the room could be cut with a tanto. Lord Takumi sama stopped and turned to the Dragon with a smile, “Donoha san, what is it that you desire most?”

He had taken the bait!

“I suppose it would be to know my family is doing well,” Donoha tried to reply with an answer that would leave crumbs for the rat to follow.

“Ah, I see, so if money could be directed to your family then. I’m sure that can be arranged,” then turning to face the Lion and golden, braided mane of black hair, “and you Akodo san, what is it that you desire?”

Asahi sama spoke succinctly, “My desires align with my cousin.” There was a brief tilt of the head toward Donoha sama.

“Uncommon bond but certainly not unheard of,” remarked Tamuki sama, “and what of you two in the back.”

Unsure if the two new commers had caught on to what Donoha had been working out on the fly. He spoke up, “They are my new retainers and I will see to their desires as their lord.” He quietly prayed they didn’t speak, and was delighted by their continued silence. He was going to have to get to know each of them better in order for them to work in harmony.

“Then you’ll take responsibility seeing to their needs?”

“Yes.”

“Then all that remains is to see how that “false” document can be dealt with.”

Donoha sama stood, leaving Mittsu Tamashi, and took the washi paper with Tamuki sama’s mon upon it. Heading over to a nearby lantern he dipped it into the flame. As it caught he held it and looked back at the thick bodied Phoenix lord, “I think I understand what you’re wishing for.”

Watching it evaporate the lord replied, “I believe you do.”

Donoha sama walked back over to his blade as the conversation came to an end. The group left and were escorted out by the ashigaru spearman that had been stationed at the door. Donoha sama half expected to have to fight his way out. Once they were at least at the next house he whispered to everyone that he’d explain everything at the caravan. He asked Tamaki san and Gunba san to make sure they are not followed.

Gunba san asked Donoha sama to take a circuitous route back through the city to the caravan. The group veered to take the long way back. Unicorn magics are strange even to other Rokugani. It seemed like a spell was cast but no one could tell. About midway back the group stopped at a shrine to the Fortune of Rice and Good harvest, Inari. Tamaki san succeeded in casting a difficult spell to spy on a room he’d only just been in. His eyes rolled up as his gaze was tossed back to the Phoenix Lord’s house. He saw him preparing letters warning his compatriots and crafting a defense for himself if he needed such an out.

Back at the caravan Donoha sama sent an attendant to seek an audience with Shiba Sono sama. The reply that came back was he would be available at the crack of dawn. In one of the wagons Donoha explained that he acted nefariously in order get Tamuki sama to admit his involvement and incriminate himself in front of witnesses.

When the attendants mentioned being done with the blood cleaning. The group had been talking about nemurani they had come across, and how much they missed Gombei sama’s tokkuri of endless sake. Donoha mentioned his smithing hammer, Chikai no kodzuchi 誓いの小槌 (Oath-hammer), his ancestor received from the Crab’s Kaiu family. Gunba san asked Donoha sama if he could see his armor. The Dragon was more than happy to oblige the Unicorn. While he did not understand what the Unicorn shugenja did, magic happened nonetheless. When it was done his armor was pristine clean and every repair that could have been made was finished!

As the 7th of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}) wound to a close the group began to change into sleeping attire. Akodo Asahi sama found a gift left upon his armor stand. A small, unremarkable, but well made tokkuri. No missive accompanied the gift, but the Lion knew it could only come from one person. Hiruma Gombei sama had left his prize possession with the Lion samurai! When he brought it over for everyone to see, the shugenja were fascinated with it! Upon checking it out with magic it was determined to be nearly as old as the Emerald Empire! What tales could it tell if it could speak about its travels, but night descends. The four decided sleeping together in one of the wagons was best. Attendants were told to rouse them an hour before dawn and have rice ready at that time.

8th of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}) – Sunrise came in its allotted time during the Hour of the Tiger (Tenth Kami / 4am to 6am). While Gunba san and Tamaki san felt fine, both Donoha sama and Asahi sama felt off physically. There has been a light partaking of Gombei sama’s gift, but nothing that would cause the food they ate to taste like ashes of a fire. Test by the two shugenja cleared them of taint, but a warning was given to carry jade upon themselves. Donoha broke out the last of their jade fingers, giving three to his cousin and keeping the other three on his person.

They made haste to the area of the caravan that was the encircled wagons of the Emerald ambassadors. Informing an attendant, they were escorted to the Phoenix wagon. Internally Donoha sama felt an eagerness to get Shiba Sono sama’s take on things and how to proceed. When they entered, Lord Asako Takumi was sitting next to the Phoenix Emerald ambassador. The Dragon felt the churn in his stomach of anxiety while he kept his face calm. Donoha sama needed a plan IMMEDIATELY!

When the two made eye contact Takumi sama was nothing but smiles. This was a man that felt he had all of his pieces in order. Donoha sama knew he had one avenue left before his companions paid for his learning how to deal with opponents that out rank you. Full attack stance was what went through his head because the worse they could do to him was demand his death. As long as he could shield his friends then that would be fine for him.

The group was asked to be seated, and they were offered tea. Shiba Sono sama offered tea to everyone new to the gathering. Then it was couched as a question that Donoha was to make an accusation toward Takumi sama? The Dragon nodded in the affirmative and then asked permission to make his case. The Phoenix Emerald ambassador nodded and Donoha began.

It was exhaustive as Donoha described the battle becoming know as the Slaughter on the hill. The isolation of suspects, the interrogation of the one Donoha sama kept from dying. Then came the trek to the cove and finding the scroll bearing the custom mon of Asako Takumi sama. Unlike nearly every other member of his clan, Donoha sama is detailed, clear, and very courteous while slamming the facts they had learned. Then came the attempted bribery and Donoha sama had mentioned his witnesses. After everything was laid out the stoutly framed Phoenix was still smiling. It was at this point Mirumoto Tanetsu sama made his presence known.

They politely suggested that everything should be discussed now and everyone should leave and wait outside. The Dragon, Lion, Phoenix, and the Unicorn left first and were shown to a bench where they could wait. Asako Takumi sama left afterward and were shown to a different seating area a bit closer to the wagons. The time then was well into the waning portion of the Hour of the Hare (Sun / 6am to 8am). It was not until the waning portion of the Hour of the Dragon (Moon / 8am to 10 am) that the two Emerald ambassadors came out and discussed something with Takumi sama first and then Mirumoto Tanetsu peeled away from the group and began approaching Donoha sama.

“You seem to have seen the storm coming Donoha san and have stepped in it.” Tanetsu sama continued with the statement Takumi sama believes the Dragon courtier set this up to provoke a duel. Donoha sama admitted he tried to angle for it when he saw him at the meeting and panicked regarding options to move forward. It was decided a duel would be had tomorrow evening at sunset. Tanetsu sama asked if the young Dragon would represent himself. Given that he bore a katana which he made himself, Mittsu Tamashi.

Donoha sama affirmed he would represent himself, and the group was informed a distant cousin of Asako Tamaki would be representing him from the Crane clan. With that the parties were dismissed to see to their affairs. By the time the group of four made it back to Donoha sama’s two wagons it was the Hour of the Serpent (Hantei / 10am to Noon) . The Dragon made a request of the others to go into the city as a group and find out what they could about their opponent. Asahi sama and Gunba san agreed to go and look. Tamaki san decided they wished to pursue the mysterious ailment afflicting both the Lion and the Dragon. When they asked Donoha what he was going to do he mentioned calligraphy and iajutsu practice. As the wrist motion of the brush nearly mimics those of the sword.

CAVE DELVING WITHOUT A SHUGENJA CAN BE DANGEROUS

6th of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}) – Isawa Tamaki san rose first among the wagon compatriots. Preparing their ofuda talismans used in their spellcraft while watching the Dragon and Lion cousins decide how morning practice would go. The air was light with clouds and dappled the ground in a mix of light and shadow. A light breeze was blowing in from the coast. Even his rice was the perfect texture for a morning meal.

He began to practice his calligraphy when Donoha sama asked him to write a report for Shiba Sono sama. The Dragon noticed his calligraphy skills exceeded his own. Tamaki san agreed to help and quickly realized why the Dragon needed the help. Donoha’s writing style is akin to a financial accountant. Meticulous, thorough, and completely dry. Tamaki san took it upon himself to enrich the reading experience to make the investigator look good.

Donoha sama had promised Asahi sama another match but a skirmish. However, his cousin asked for another duel to start the skirmish off. The Dragon promised not to disarm him this time. Inwardly to himself he knew that if he was incapable of knocking his cousin out with his first strike. Then the longer the fight went the more likely his cousin was going to win. For a courtier of the Dragon clan Kitsuki Donoha sama was exceptional with a katana. Watching his cousin battle his way through hordes of enemies, he knew the Lion had the upper hand on him in any skirmish.

The crack and ear popping the Dragon left on the side of the Lion’s head with their bokken. Is the only reason it took four strikes from the Lion to make the Dragon concede the match. Maybe with Lions amongst the first or second Dan ranks could he still win, but large scales skirmishes he’d be hard pressed to stand toe to toe with veteran bushi. Still both of them went over things to learn, improve upon, and it was a bonding experience for the cousins.

After another half an Hour of the Day (OOC: Rokugan is on a 12 hour clock where Earth is 24 hours, so time units should be doubled) on horseback with Yukiabo going over polearms and spears. Tamaki san had finished the report and Donoha sama went to turn it into Shiba Sono sama. When he returned they talked about the next steps in pursuing Asako Takumi sama.

In order to gather information Donoha sama thought of the working tradesman for information. They would be the ones to do the labor and skilled laborers needs plans and instructions to carry out their tasks. This means that they would know a base structure of how the plan will work on the day to day. Thus began a venture to the working tradesman’s saki houses.

It was worth noting that first sake house did not have any useful info but their patrons speak now of Donoha sama, the dragon samurai that can breathe fire! It was a trick down with spitting the overly potent saki out of his mouth and through a candle flame – igniting it! He pulled the same trick off at the second bar with the help of Isawa Tamaki san urging the fire kami to help him out. He overheard one table discussing items about a new river trade deal. Inviting them over to drink with the three samurai. There was the three offers and two refusals before they accepted and join people far above their station in life.

The group shut the bar down and they learned a great deal. That this new trade deal Asako Takumi sama put together would affect sea and river trafficking of goods and services. If people decided they were against it then they would often disappear! The deal had not been finalized just yet but it should be soon and then the flow of koku would begin!

7th of Doji in Rokugan’s year 1123 (Month of the Goat {OOC: August}) – When Donoha sama and Asahi sama awoke they felt hungover from the amount of saki, fermented fruit drinks, and other forms liquor they went through last night. Having rice in the morning made them feel better but training that day was skipped. Their next moves was the topic of conversation.

They decided to go and visit the prisoner they had taken from the Slaughter on the Hill. This has been the name that’s become the descriptor of the battle. Agasha Re has confirmed it was Kitsuki Donoha sama, Akodo Asahi sama, and Hiruma Gombei sama that performed the bloody deed. It’s only been two days and Donoha’s legend involves flying off cliffs to cut the head off an opponent in a dive before a spinning landing on their feet! Breathing fire thanks to the tales from the lower end saki houses! As they left Donoha had a camp attendant send word to Shiba Sono sama they would visit with a report after the interrogation.

Arriving at a repurposed home in a reclusive district of Shiro Shiba did our three samurai find themselves. One of a few guards offered to escort them to the prisoner, which the group accepted. When they entered the room the prisoner looked upon the three with angered contempt. The Lion and his wooden bokken, tinged with the sneer of authority. The Phoenix and his half hidden face staring out from the ofuda talismans hanging from their hat’s brim. Last but not least, the Dragon with the scar over their left eye and his thin smile.

He soon gave up his name to the Dragon, after hearing him describe how an investigation was not unlike forging a rokuganto (sword). I believe the removing of the smithing hammer nemurani from his obi. Accentuating his sentences smacking it into their hands as they talked may have influenced a more communicative attitude. Fujiwara, fled an accident in his village deep within the Phoenix lands. Donoha noted his first crime was travel without permission of one’s lord.

He grew hungry and desperate and became a robber, his second admission of a crime. Then he robbed a noble that decided to hire him after he caught him in the act. Recruited into a group the noble used to remove obstacles to their ambitions. From waylaying a Lion merchant transporting blades, to scaring and cajoling merchants, tradesmen, and even some public officials. The third type of crime in the given confession.

It was when he mentioned that they would make people disappear with murder or cover up murders the lord had outsourced. His fourth admission of a type of crime. Then he said it. The night of the murder of Asako Eiko they were to cover the tracks of the assassin! In addition the majority of them were told to go to the hill with the Shrine of Eternal Flame and obstruct the investigation. While a calm smile remained on Donoha’s scarred face, internally he was elated to see events aligning with the investigation.

This prompted Fujiwara to begin spilling all the secrets he could. A hideout about three quarters of an Hour of the Day (OOC: Earth time 1hr30min) north by northwest of Shiro Shiba. A cave hidden in a cove along the coast. Next came further information about the leader of this band of criminals. The noble was a member of the Asako family, and they went by a moniker never said to their face – the Fat Man.

Having been emotionally broken by Donoha talking about smithing, Fujiwara nearly wet himself at Donoha’s promise when he insulted a noble, even one that was a guilty of crime. That he would live a full and long life. Many Rokugani consider death the return to the karmic cycle and the chance at a better existence in the next life. By denying someone a return to the cycle they must endure their existence. Donoha made sure he knew that no matter happened to him here, he would be healed to full health to live out his days in a cell.

To flesh out some of the details Donoha’s Lion cousin asked some follow up points. Getting clarification they left and Isawa Tamaki san followed a few moments later. Having tried to offer the man some solace that the right path could be found again. This left Fujwara in a sobbing heap upon the floor. Asahi sama told the guard to have him bathe and double his food for today. The guard nodded and the group left for their meeting with the Phoenix Emerald Ambassador.

The meeting was straight forward if a pleasant respite. The Dragon presented his findings to the Emerald Ambassador. Shiba Sono sama was happy to learn about the reason for the Slaughter on the Hill. What surprised him was Donoha san’s willingness to mingle among heimen (merchants and tradesmen) and eta (untouchable peasants) to find information. Most Dragon Clan samurai are stoic, loathe to speak, and enigmatic, at best. However, getting information from the one in front of him was as simple as asking for tea. It was this dichotomy that made him an even greater mystery.

As discussed in the meeting the group made their way to the hideout of the brigands when they left. The Dragon on his trusted Rokugani pony, Yukiabo. The Phoenix shugenja rode behind him on the same northern horse, while the Lion rode alone on a loaned mount. The trip there was uneventful and the group secured the two mounts where they could graze a bit. Checking their gear, with the Lion and Dragon in heavy armor, while the Phoenix shugenja made sure they had adorned their hat with enough of the ofuda talismans along the brim.

Fujiwara mentioned the cave was very small and if standing might be able to squeeze in 12 to 15 people. The layout was reported as a circular room with carved stairs on both sides from the mouth of the cave. Leading to a raised area for a speaker to address those present. Below the raised area was a small alcove for important items to be stored there.

Upon arrival there were six members present and one of them was arguing about something. Feeling confident the Dragon decided to try and leap into the room surprising them and then defend himself as his cousin shoot them with arrows. It was arrogant to actually not think of their shugenja companion as a combatant. Hyped to finally put the last of the brigands down and removed the pieces of the rotund Asako noble from the board. Donoha sama rushed in declaring his intent to finish what they started on Slaughter on the Hill.

Followed quickly by the Lion bushi and Phoenix shugenja. To say a fight in a cave poorly lit by lanterns, holding now nine combatants swinging weapons, was dangerous to all was an understatement. Things took a turn for the worst when a lucky shot from a brigand stabbed Akodo Asahi sama in armpit after he loosed an arrow into another brigand! It nearly killed him with that thrust and the nature of the fight’s tone shifted from bravado to surviving the conditions of the battle.

It cannot be overstated in saying Isawa Tamaki changed the landscape of the fight by summoning kami of fire and air! Causing balls of flame to erupt or create boiling pockets of steam to blind and broil the enemy. The Lion was forced into dropping his bow and defending himself and the Phoenix while the Dragon swung the black blade, Mittsu Tamashi, the three soul katana!

Each stroke of Mittsu Tamashi did not just kill the opponent, but cut the brigand in HALF! Of the six brigands four were cut in half by Donoha. One burned to death in the Phoenix’s fire spell. The last one was a joint effort where the Lion whittled him down and the Dragon dealt the final blow. The fight was a humbling lesson not to get to full of one’s self.

After a moment of gathering their breath Donoha sama went to Asahi sama and began to bandage their wounds. As he applied the bandage there was a flash of light as though a beam made of the starry night sky erupted! Bathing the Lion in starlight during the day! After a second or two it was gone, the bandage applied, but all of Asahi’s wounds were gone!

“I did not know you had a kami of the Void watching over you Donoha,” uttered Tamaki san.

“I do indeed and their name is Chiasa,” replied Donoha sama, “cousin make sure to thank her for that gift when you meet her.”

“I will indeed,” said Asahi sama.

With that out of the way, the Dragon began to explore the alcove below the raised area. In there he found instructions to gather on the hill to impede the investigation surrounding the murder of Asako Eiko upon a scroll. What is more is that scroll bore a customized mon of the Phoenix! Finally, they had evidence and just needed to tie the mon to its owner. Tamaki san offered to check the scroll further with the help of the kami. The Dragon was all to happy to hold the scroll up so the Phoenix could inspect it.

Taking another of their ofuda talismans Tamaki san performed a spell slightly different from the Reflections of Pan Ku. This one would show the essence surrounding the document. As the kami began to swirl in an unseen dance to all but Isawa Tamaki san. They began to feel the emotional context as the document was being written. Sensations of haste and anxiety began to flood them as the feelings gave way to a vision of an indoor onsen with orange flowers floating within. The vision fades as the stamp of the highly stylized Asako mon is stamped upon it.
